Flight Plan [Mov] [Eng]

Written by Funn Lim

"Well I suspect Asians, especially Malaysians may have a difficult but fun time with the title Flight Plan. For one, I almost pronounced it as Fight Plan, so it could be a movie about boxing whilst on the plane. My sister thought Fright Plan is quite a title, since this movie depicts a situation every parent would not want to be found in. If it is a cooking show in the plane, it could be Fried Pan. If you're a writer, Find Pen would be nice...I will bet though many will pronounce it as Fight Pan. "

Alternative Titles
When Finding Nemo was first released, at pasar malams you can hear "Fighting Nemo! Fighting Nemo sold here!". For a moment I thought did Pixar released a movie about fighting fish?

I almost pronounced Lord of The Rings : Return Of The King as Lod of the Ling : Letun of the King thanks to my friend who said Letun of the King when she was talking very very fast.

And a plane full of passengers plus a really big plane like the Airbus A380 type.

Summary
Taken from imdb.com

Flying at 40,000 feet from Berlin to New York, Kyle Pratt (Foster) faces every mother's worst nightmare when her young daughter Julia (Lawston) vanishes mid-flight. Already emotionally devastated by the unexpected death of her husband, Kyle desperately struggles to prove her sanity to the disbelieving flight crew and passengers, while facing the very real possibility that she may be losing her mind. Though neither Captain Rich (Bean), nor Air Marshal Gene Carson (Sarsgaard) want to doubt the bereaved widow, all evidence indicates that her daughter was never on board, resulting in paranoia and doubt among the passengers and crew of the plane. Desperately alone, Kyle can only rely on her own wits to solve the mystery and save her daughter.

How can a parent lose a child sitting right next to them in a plane flying like up there? Well this movie will explain how.

Ever since I became obsessed with National Geographic's Air Crash Investigation, I began to notice movies about plane crashes and real plane crashes as well. It's not very funny if you ask me to notice such stuff because they can be depressing. So when this movie was released with Jodie Fosters' huge panicking face in the poster, I was quite interested in this movie, more so it takes place on a plane.

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I was laughing though, more so when someone cheekily asked "Has she checked the luggage compartment?" and indeed they did just that in the movie, so it's not so funny anymore in retrospect. Anyway I watched this movie because

a. I wanted to go to Debenhams for shopping
b. I like the Berjaya Times Square GSC cinema
c. Curious how the girl disappeared in the plane
d. and the most important reason of all, Sean Bean.

Ever since I watched LOTR, I became somewhat of a Sean Bean fanatic. I think he is a great actor but often overlooked and often underrated. Maybe he should change his name to Shaun Beehn, more exotic perhaps? Before I watched this movie I told myself "Ahhh Sean Bean, the non-American, surely the villain". So as not to spoil your viewing pleasure but also because you might be wondering the same thing you Sean Ben fans, you can happily go watch this movie knowing nope, he's not the villain. In fact he played the role of the captain in such a dignified manner, I became more of a Sean Bean fanatic after this movie although his role is like nanoseconds you know.

Anyway, the plot first.

At first it sounds very ridiculous. It boils down to "How can a parent lose a child sitting right next to them in a plane flying like up there?", "Who would go to so much effort to do this?" and "Why??".

Well the movie explains it and to tell you will spoil it but really it's not a question of how, since not many people notice other people nowadays. It is not a question of who, since it's not Sean Bean which I am thankful because that would be so obvious so any "who" will do. But the why part was the most ridiculous aspect of this movie. Watch this movie and see if you agree with me. I find the why part the weakest because it does not make sense. Maybe if more people were involved, maybe it may make sense and then the question is again WHY KYLE PRATT? This movie explained it and you realise it has very little to do with the fact that she built the plane but for reasons even until now I find it hard to accept. So throw your logic of whys out of the window and only then WHO and HOW will definitely be very interesting to watch.

Performance wise, Jodie Foster deserves an Oscar for this performance. I am serious! She was so good as the frantic mother. At first she looked slightly embarassed as her daughter has a tendency of walking away from her. But before that she as a grieving wife (her husband just jumped off the roof and she was on her way back to America with his body and her daughter) and believably so. She looked so old, very little make up and the stress on her face shows. Then when she became frantic and called for the Captain's help, she was insistent and very panicky. When she was informed that her daughter was never on the plane and that she died, her performance was so very good, you can't help but feel frantic for her. Like her you do question whether she imagined it but really, got some more half way to go for this movie, surely she can't be imagining stuff? But the way Jodie Foster interpreted the role, the grief, the disbelief or almost believing it all was really the highlight of this movie. She basically carried the entire movie and her performance was excellent.

I must mention though that the name Kyle Pratt sounds like a man's name and indeed a man was originally slated for this role until the director realised a woman may be more effective as a frantic parent. But I would love to see a man in this role because I believe a man can be as frantic as a woman, more so wife just died and daughter disappeared in a plane. A pity but Jodie Foster was marvellous.

Sean Bean, as I have mentioned above was wonderful. He played the captain who is seriously conflicted whether to believe a potentially mad woman or ignore her. His conscience got to him and he agreed for the plane to be searched. A very dignified performance. He looks so much more older in here though.

Peter Sarsgaard who plays the marshall on board looks like he's on drugs. I mean this guy's eyes and his lazy speech will induce you to sleep but perhaps it was deliberate. On restrospect, I do think his performance was ok but you have to see the entire movie to know why.

The little girl, Marlene Lawston I think who plays Julia Pratt had very little role but she is cute as in childlike cute which is so very are in Hollywood these days.

The rest are forgettable.

The other great aspect of this movie is being able to see the interior of this plane, places where either you're the pilot or in a Hollywood movie only you can see. I marvel at the computers and all. What a sight but some looked fake.

Overall, forget about some parts of the plot, the highlight of this movie is the performances of Jodie Foster whose performance alone makes gives this movie a very high standard and with Sean Bean in this movie, I can't bring myself not to recommend this movie. But be forwarned, the plot is ridiculous.

Verdict
A must watch, especially for Jodie Foster and Sean Bean fans or fans of good acting basically.

Summary
This is the land of myths, demons and Gods. Gods come in the form of animals from the magical forest but because of men logging and destroying the forest, many Gods became very angry and turned into senseless demons where the very touch of their oozing blood will kill the humans and everything in their paths. Prince Ashitaka, a young prince from a village occupied by really old people was defending the village from a demon boar called Nago and he himself got touched in the process. This meant he will die a painful death as the poison in the form of the demon ooze spread around his entire body. The boar died. The village elder, like the witch doctor advised him to forever leave the village, go to a place she named to see the world without hate and to seek a cure for his illness. And so he went and he encountered a seedy monk in the process with an agenda of his own and he came upon Iron Town which was situated near a great magical forest where animals still dwell there. The forest is considered healthy with appearances of tiny magical creatures and is run by the respected Forest Spirt which by day takes the form of an elk and by night a magical big transparent creature as he walked around the forest. Iron Town is run by lady Eboshi, a ruthless woman who cares very little for the forest and has been for many years slowly encroach onto the forest land in search of iron. The animals in the forms of Gods were naturally very angry but did little over the years except to wish her dead. As Prince Ashitaka stayed at Iron Town for some time, he realised Lady Eboshi was not as bad as the animals would see her. She saved young girls from brothels and gave them jobs, she treated the lepers with respect and she genuinely wanted to build Iron Town into a place for those without much hope but she has little respect for the forest and the Gods. One night Iron Town came under attack by the wolves and a wolf girl adopted by the Wolf named Moro. This girl was Princess Mononoke and she was fearless in her attempt to kill Eboshi but failed and Ashitaka instead saved her and left Iron Town. Mononoke distrusts humans and wishes only to kill Eboshi. As Ashitaka left, someone shot him but amazingly he didn't die. Mononoke took him to the Forest Spirt who healed his wound but not that demon scar. And then suddenly the boars appeared, led by the very old and very blind Okkoto who wanted to wage a war against the humans. As the boars prepared for war and Eboshi agreeing to help the monk with an agenda to kill the forest spirit (the Emperor wanted to live forever so he thought by eating the forest spirit's head he will live forever), Iron Town came from under attack by the samurais who wanted to take Eboshi's irons. Mononoke was busy helping the boars to save the forest whilst Ashitaka was busy finding Eboshi to stop the killings. Very hectic time and in the end Eboshi's arrogance and action nearly destroyed the forest and killed everybody but Ashitaka and Mononoke set things right once again.

Comments
It is very hard for me to summarise the entire story without the summary sounding like some out of this world fantasy tale. This is a fantasy movie, an animation by the famed animator who later gave us the delightful and enchanting Spirited Away. Both movies dealt with spirits, Gods, respect and arrogance. Knowing ones place in the order of the world. I am sure Asians, although you may not be a Japanese may be able to identify with the many aspects of this movie. Quite simply this movie is about environment, respect for the environment and if not dire consequences shall follow. It is a tall tale, the animals as Gods who seem way too big. But it is interesting to see the animator choosing the boars to play a certain role, the wolves another, the deers and etc. You won't see tigers and lions and basically African type of animals but enough to sense certain animals have certain characteristics so well connected to this movie. The boars are a hateful irrational bunch, the wolves the wise ones, the deers the loyal ones and etc. I am simply amazed by the suitability of the animals.

Humans in here are portrayed as the ignorant ones, the ones who caused chaos without knowing it. Whilst it does not portray humans in a favourable light, nor is there a clear cut line between good people and bad people. The two extremes are Ashitaka, the bystander drawn into the war and Lady Eboshi, the one who fueled the war with her disrespect for nature. The animals themselves aren't that innocent at all, in fact the animals themselves are almost human-like in many aspects; the boars are the extremes in one hand and there are the wolves who tried to stop the war eventhough they hated the humans. The contempts by the humans for the animals and the animals for the humans are equal in strength; basically they hated one another. Humans hate the animals for occupying valuable space and taking up valuable resources whilst animals hate humans for driving them away and taking valuable space and using valuable resources. You see the similarities? If there is a message that this movie tries to drive home, I feel it is the need to seek a middle ground, an equilibrium and the balancing of needs, wants and resources. Sharing of resources and preservation of nature that provides these resources together with all the inahibitants are equally important because one can't do without the other. Of course this movie makes it like really out of this world but the theme and its message is universal and very true, more so in today's world. Whilst scientists acknowledge that nature as in the forest provides for cures to some illnesses that we are only beginning to comprehend, humans are logging away at such rate that by the time we do understand, the cure is destroyed. Life is like one big chess board, every piece on it is as important to complete the game. I think in the end that's the movie's ultimate message.

I must say though, this movie is by no means easy to watch. For an animation feature, some scenes are very violent such as one arrow could basically decapitate a head (and you see the head falling) or sexually suggestive such as the women of Iron Town whose dress are rather loose and you could see cleavage. This is not a child's animation but a very adult themed (not porno type but serious issues) packaged in a cute looking anime which in retrospect isn't that cute. It is more suitable for adults since the message may be geared towards adults.

There are many characters coming in and out of a given scene, but never did I feel a particular scene seems crowded. I feel each character has a role to play, however insignificant or irrelevant they may be.

For me, the most boring character is actually Ashitaka because he is a bystander, observing and later taking part mainly to save the girl he loves. If you must know he couldn't be with the girl in the end as the girl rationalised that they may love one another but their ideals are different so it may be better for them to be apart.

The most irrelevant is Mononoke herself who seems to be involved in this war without realising and acknowledging she is human too. It at times seem silly that she can ignore such an obvious fact. For a title character, she has very little role and only appear much much later into the movie.

The most confusing one is the monk, Jigo who is not really a monk I guess since he is so keen on killing the forest spirit on the orders of the Emperor. He is quite ambigous in character; even until the end I am not sure if he is good or bad. But one thing for certain, he is greedy and he cares very little for the consequences of his actions.

The most interesting character is actually Lady Eboshi. You think she is evil and yet she genuinely cares about Iron Town and the people in it. She is mostly arrogant, thinking that the forest and the Gods are nonsense and it is to be exploited and not to be preserved. But she is by no means evil or mean spirited. She just have very little regard for environment, and to me Lady Eboshi is very much like you and I. I too sometimes can't understand why we must give way to the forest, why we can't just chop them all of to build more houses for needy people, why we must create a forest reservation whatever when we can better use that big chunk of land. But that was me before I watched National Geographic Channel almost every night and remembering the delicate balance between nature and humans and the effect on the environment. After all, like the campaign says, Earth is the only home we have right now and if we don't do something now, it will die sooner than the expected expiry date. We will definitely not see that day any time soon, maybe your great great great great grandchild will. To put it simply, if you believe in reincarnation, you may as well be that great great great great grandchild. And isn't that just a drag?

All in all, the animation is superb. The Japanese have been drawing their animation the same way for decades, the difference is the attention to details and the vibrant colours. This movie boasts some very beautiful drawings, and very life like especially the way the wind blew over the grass and the way the grass swayed to the wind. It was such a sight. One of my favourite has got to be those that involves water, the river, the way it interacts with the touch, the wind, the rain ... so very real and so very beautiful and yet you know it's animation. The animation in this movie does not try to be realistic but yet everything feels real. Essentially the drawings captured the essence of the subject and not merely copying the subject itself. Much like those Chinese paintings you see in the olden days where a black inked bamboo still feels like a green coloured bamboo because the feel of it is captures, rather than just a photographic capture of it. The humans are still as cartoonish as ever, with western features that most westerners may not even have. I think it is deliberate to draw the humans so un-human like, so cartoon-ish looking so as to differentiate between reality and fantasy. But the best had to be those moments of complete silence but with a music playing in the background, softly. The Japanese are very good with silent type of scenes, it kinda gives you goosebumps and that you suddenly feel like you're all alone in that big wide space.

The dubbing ... mostly excellent. I didn't like the actor who dubbed Ashitaka who sounded like half dead. Claire Danes was quite ok as the very emotional Mononoke. Jada Pinkett Smith had a small role only and I find her character too "in your face" type of personality whilst Billy Bob Thornton as the monk did well. Gillian Anderson as Mono was strange; almost didn't recognise her voice but she sounded wise although again like half dead. The best was the voice of Lady Eboshi; at times arrogant, sometimes cynical, sometimes kind, it was English accent and I couldn't recognise who. Only in the credits did I know it was Minnie Driver. What a voice if you ask me but yet didn't quite notice it before. I must say though the timing of the dubbing was perfect. It is funny to hear them speak too fast and then I realise Japanese do tend to speak very fast so the dubbing had to follow the rhythm of the movements of the mouth. It will be mighty interesting how the Germans will be able to dub it this way since generally it takes the Germans far longer sentence to say the same thing as in Japanese. Chinese will have no problems since we are generally fast speaker and we use less words to describe something that the Japanese would have in their native tongue.

Anyway, superb animation, great dubbing, interesting storyline and a great message in the movie also, this movie's only flaw is the length, like Spirited Away. Very long which at times gets to my patience. But still a great watch.

Verdict
A must buy.

Interesting Ermm Illegal Activity
I know it is wrong to buy pirated DVDs but my conscience is clear. You know how much is one DVD these days? RM69-90 to RM89-90 for those with special features and all. What a ridiculous amount of money.

Anyway, when I chanced upon this movie in a DVD store at some undisclosed shopping complex, and it only costs RM8-00, I bought it. I thought it was you know pirated. When I got home, to my delight I realise the guy sold me the original DVD which would have cost more than RM8-00. How I know it's original? For one the special features in the DVD actually had special features from this movie and not from other movies. Then I noticed the DVD itself, the disc itself looks very original and then I saw the hologram sticker on the disc that no pirated DVD would ever bother to produce. It was real indeed. Maybe nobody wanted to buy this movie?

It is also frustrating though that Korean movies are so IN these days and yet not much selection. Very frustrating.

Anyway the art of buying such DVDs is simple. Wait for the real original DVD to be released and rest assured all the pirated ones you buy will be of high quality, except no trailers, special features, and etc. And may not play also. If you want to watch latest movies, take my advice, don't buy the pirated DVD which will spoil your viewing pleasure. Go to the cinema. I enjoy going to the cinema to watch movies, big movies with special effects which will worth the RM10-00 ticket. I only buy DVDs of the pirated type when I can't find the original OR if the movie is like Untold Scandal. I hate editing and cut scenes so what to do eh? Buy pirated ones lar. But even pirated ones got different versions! Not easy to get the pirated DVD that you want.

My point is, pirated DVD is the last resort. I hate it when I am watching original DVD and there is this ad which says buying pirated DVDs is illegal when hey, I bought the original. You won't have such nonsense in the pirated DVD though. Of course the entertainment industry will protest and say what you're doing is illegal. But it is for my own private "consumption" and if DVD is maybe RM30-00 cheaper, you bet I'll buy the original. In fact I bought the original for Harry Potter movies and also School Of Rock and those Korean movies, each one of them over RM69-90 and sometimes as much as RM150-00! I am willing to spend on my favourite films. To tell you the truth, I rarely buy pirated DVDs or VCDs unless I can't find the original or the original is cut, edited and then butchered.

The art of making people ignore pirated and buy all things original is to give it a fair and reasonable price. And I mean fair and reasonable to us and not to the industry. To me VCDs at RM14-90 to RM16-90 is fair. DVDs with all the special features at RM40-00 to RM50-00 is fair. Anything above that will only encourage piracy to bloom.

If you're in KL, check out the Berjaya Times Square GSC cinema. Big, new, clean, spacious and best of all, the popcorn. Definitely worth the RM10-00.

Medical Brothers [MBC] [Kr]

Written by Funn Lim

"Often times I felt like wiping that smirk off his face by slapping him. That was how much I disliked Soo-hyoung and I guess that was how good his (Jang Dong Gun) performance was."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Released In
1997

Language
Original version is Korean, but you can find Mandarin dubbed version with Chinese/Malay subtitles. Just take note; the Malay subtitles are slightly better than All About Eve but the punctuation and the arrangement is just as bad, but not worse though. But sometimes the character finished talking and yet the subtitles just so slow in appearing. One episode the last 15 min don't have subtitles. Amazingly I could understand what was said. Maybe innately I do know Korean! Not really. I just go guessed and frankly I don't even know how accurate are the subtitles. I of course assume the Mandarin version is accurate.

No of Episodes
16, but I believe originally must be longer because some scenes just don't make sense.

Themesong
There isn't one. The starting scene is always those music only and that music is like dying, like so slow and like so boring, all blue and like really suffering from terminal illness type of music. But the soundtrack inside the series is good, a mix of English and Korean songs.

Cast-Character
I only know 4. The rest must be famous but I do not know them. It is interesting to see so many familiar faces that I saw in Dae Jang Geum aka Jewel In The Palace albeit 6 years later (Jewel in The Palace was made in 2003).

Jang Dong Gun - Kim Soo-hyoung
Son Chang-min - Kim Jun-ki
Lee Young Ae - Cha Min-joo

And plenty of people walking in and out of every scene.

Summary
Basically a medical drama with a very morbid twist towards the end, it details the love lives and rivalry between two brothers from a family of distinguished doctors who work in the same hospital ran by their grandfather but both are not actual brothers by blood relations. Soo-hyoung the younger, handsomer and more brilliant one is the adopted son but his adoption was as a result of some tragic circumstances and when Soo-hyoung, a brilliant but arrogant heart/lung specialist found out the awful truth, he was determined to seek revenge for whatever the price. His long suffering girlfriend Min-joo, also a doctor in the same hospital stood by him through his philandering attitude as well as ignoring her feelings most of the time until she almost died from a serious illness which made her realise she could do better to leave him whilst that made Soo-hyoung realise where his heart lies. Older brother Jun-ki made several mistakes when operating, one caused the death of his wife and the other caused the death of his good friend's wife. Filled with remorse he ran away, lost his memory and met the innocent and sweet Regina. He fell for her and gained his memory as well as his confidence as a doctor back again and returned to work, much to the chagrin of Soo-hyoung who wanted to get rid of this more patient and well liked brother of his. But things became much more complicated when Soo-hyoung himself was dying from an incurable disease whilst Regina was dying of a heart failure. One having a change of heart and the other in need of a new heart, both found solace in each other's company in the time of death and that was when Soo-hyoung made the decision that will change the lives of everybody forever.

Comments
This series was filmed in 1997, the same year where Jang Dong Gun later went on to film 2 more series, Myth Of A Hero which I am going to watch and Model, which I have finished watching and shall not torture myself anymore by watching it a second time. You could actually see him gaining a bit of weight in Model whilst in Medical Brothers, he looked somewhat younger but much slimmer and also taller. As Soo-hyoung, he is perpetually wearing his glasses which I suspect he was not too comfortable with because he kept touching them in the beginning of this series. This series was acclaimed in the sense that Jang Dong Gun was finally recognised for being a good actor, where some said he improved tremendously here. You can also find another future star in the making in here, that is Lee Young Ae who looked the same in 1997 and in 2003 and in 2005, so basically she has always looked older than her actual age.

There is no denying Jang Dong Gun and Lee Young Ae were both very young when this series was filmed. For example, Jang Dong Gun, now in 2005 is 34 and back then he was about 26 perhaps and yet in this series he played a 32 year old specialist. He looked much too young and much too awkward to play a specialist but every other scene he pulled it off admirably. Lee Young Ae was also around that age but in here she is playing perhaps the same age or maybe a year or two younger. She looked the age by the way but yet she paired off well with Jang Dong Gun because their acting compliment one another. I'll elaborate more on this.

What is very good about this series is in the Korean sense, it is as morbid as most Korean series made during that time. Someone has to die and he or she has to die in a dramatic fashion meant to shock. You won't find such an ending in Chinese series or at least in TVB series and so I find this series' ending radical. The surgical scenes looked very real, you can even see a heart beating up close. But half the time I do not know what they were saying, even in English by the way. However I enjoyed the medical discussions and the surgical scenes because I would never expect such authentic scenes even now more so in 1997 and this coming from an Asian series so to speak. How accurate were the medical treatments I do not know. Another good aspect of this series, apart from the acting is the engaging storyline. It's nothing new, it's very dramatic but somehow it works in making you sit up and pay attention, even when the subtitles are nowhere to be seen. I thorougly enjoyed every single scene between Soo-hyoung and Min-joo, I find their love story very suffering and yet very engaging. Plus you have some very interesting intimate scenes between these 2. Again I'll elaborate more on this later. The cinematography for certain scenes were good and the dialogue spoken by the characters very realistic. But the selling point of this series for a Jang Dong Gun fan is of course Jang Dong Gun himself. This was one of his earlier series and his rawness in acting shows but if people hailed this as his turning point in acting, I can only deduce that he must have been awful before this. I am not saying he's bad here but let's just say All About Eve totally made me fall for his charm and his great acting whilst this series, you see the diamond in the rough. More on this later.

Who is the villain?
If there is a villain in this series, I can't see him or her. There is no real villain and therein lies the attraction of this series. You can say the grandfather is the villain. After all he would commit murder to save the reputation of the hospital. Maybe not murder but there is a suggestion of it. Soo-hyoung's mother died on the operating table caused by Jun-ki's father who later committed suicide due to regrets. He found out he misdiagnosed the illness, which was actually caused by his own father who refused to confirm the findings. He left a suicide note that Soo-hyoung must be taken care for by the family. Then Soo-hyoung's father sued the hospital to know the truth of his wife's death and after a meeting with Jun-ki's grandfather, he became missing and never to be seen again. That I think is why Soo-hyoung thought the grandfather committed murder. The series never explained this at all and like Soo-hyoung one immediately deduce father died because of some foul play. Like Soo-hyoung told Min-joo; "I can understand if it was medical negligence but to kill my father, I can never accept that..." which was why he was bent on revenge which resulted in several doctors losing their reputation following one heart transplant and his grandfather slipping into coma and dying without regaining conciousness. So maybe the grandfather is the villain but yet he did what he did to protect the hospital. Not a noble reason but still a reason.

You can say Soo-hyoung is the villain. But I don't see it when he plotted his revenge against the grandfather but I do see it when he started to pursue his little sister (well, 25 years living together as sister and brother so that makes her a sister) and then broke her heart and drove her to commit suicide. That was just plain vicious and that was when I can't understand this character. In the beginning he looked like he really liked his sister and yet for revenge he was willing to go so low in character. The way he treated Min-joo was also disgusting to put it in plain words but yet what he did at the end of the series could only be said to be noble. So is he the villain? Maybe not.

The character of Soo-hyoung
As I have mentioned above, this is one character that is easy to hate and very difficult to like. He is disgusting with the way he carelessly kicked Min-joo aside. In fact in the beginning of this series, he returned after 1 year abroad in the States and his first scene was him stabbing a dying patient's heart in a very dramatic fashion in the A&E and thus saving his life. This character is meant to be radical from this 1st scene. He seems keen on seeing his brother fail, in fact he caused his brother to fail in one routine surgery, breaking his brother's confidence. It didn't help that the grandfather actually encouraged the rivalry but the more gentler older brother refused to be sucked into the rivalry. Basically Soo-hyoung is a great surgeon but knows very little on how to become a doctor whilst his older brother, Jun-ki a mediocre surgeon but is a great doctor as he always puts the patient's interest as first priority. Soo-hyoung views all surgeries like a game, a competition that he must complete within a certain time because he wanted to. From the beginning of the series until the end, he does things his way, whether in work, in life, love and even in death. He controls his own destiny and he refuses to listen to what others have to say.

And that is what makes this character so intriguing; he is simply such a bastard to begin with one can't help but fall for his I don't care attitude and devilish charm. He smirks a lot and he is all the time over confident. He pretends he doesn't care, especially when Min-joo was very sick and yet when alone he fears for her life and he cries. He does care but he just refuse to show it. When facing his own mortality, he was in disbelief, he feared death and he hated his impending doom. He ran away, he was in denial until he met Regina, who was also dying but accepted her fate calmly. In her company he found acceptance of his impending fate. Somehow she managed to calm him down and with her he wasn't the cocky arrogant Soo-hyoung, but a much calmer person. The change was interesting. I do wonder, if this series have gone on for another 10 episodes, could the writer suggest a love story between these two? It seems like for once Soo-hyoung did not view Regina, a pretty girl as just another conquest, he actually took the time to sit down and just enjoy her company. Very interesting.

His ending may be a bit shocking but I find it suitable. His reason was he was going to die sooner or later so why not sooner so that his death could give life to another, in this case Regina? The scene where his brother cried tearfully when he knew what Soo-hyoung did and how Min-joo was crying her heart out was devastating. Especially for Min-joo who at last had his heart all to herself only to have him die some time later, it was simply sad.

I find Soo-hyoung a very complex character, sinister, mean, arrogant, a total bastard and yet at the same time engaging, charismatic and absolutely charming when he wants to be.

The actor Jang Dong Gun
Looking much too young to be a specialist like Soo-hyoung, he more than made up for the lack of numbers as in age with his really engaging performance. I believe the editing may have caused some odd moments, and often I questioned why he had to be so mean to his older brother. Then it was much later I found out the entire family, including himself knew he was an adopted child and the fact that the grandfather encouraged the competition and rivalry, I think Soo-hyoung felt perhaps it would be to his advantage to kick his much respected brother out of the picture. The way Jang Dong Gun interpreted this character is not very easy to watch. I mean I kept thinking this is Hyung Chul you know, how can he act that way? Many said this was an improved acting from Jang Dong Gun. I almost didn't believe it because he was smirking so much but when I got used to all the smirking and realised some scenes were badly edited, I began to appreciate his performance. At times still raw but he got better towards the end with some classic moments. His worst scenes were the kissing scenes, because all that were camera angles. His best moments were often with Lee Young Ae or when he was alone, like banging on the table when he realised he was dying. There was nothing pretty about his performance because he was playing such an ugly bastard type of character. I never liked Soo-hyoung, not even until the end but he gave Soo-hyoung a certain sense of integrity; he sticks by his decision more or less, good or bad. A lesser actor would have done well in this character but would have given this character a sense of mocking the viewers. This character is dangerously close to doing that many times with his smirks and his arrogant attitude. Maybe it is because I am a big fan of Jang Dong Gun that I thought he gave this character quite simply character. I very much enjoyed his performance towards the end although the first 2 or 3 episodes had me in total disbelief that one can smirk that much. Often times I felt like wiping that smirk off his face by slapping him. That was how much I disliked Soo-hyoung and I guess that was how good his performance was.

I must mention that Soo-hyoung reminded me of Li Zheng in Model. Same smirk, same arrogance and self assured manner but Li Zheng was more bearable than Soo-hyoung though. At least he wasn't that malicious and Soo-hyoung was much too arrogant for his own good.

The character of Min-joo
At first glance I was kinda insulted by this character. A successful intelligent beautiful woman and yet got pushed around by that arrogant jerk Soo-hyoung. In fact the way Soo-hyoung had her wrapped around his fingers and she merely the follower to the clearly more dominant Soo-hyoung was really quite uncomfortable to watch, since I have my own views on how a woman like Min-joo should behave; namely dump him should be her first option. She was after all treated with such disrespect. The very first scene had him meeting her and she was angry with him for leaving one year ago without saying good bye, no letters or hellos all these while and he simply shot her back by saying "Did I ever said we were in a relationship? Did I ever said we are a couple? Did I ever said I love you?". Her heart was broken again and again and again throughout 16 episodes again and again and again.

But darn it, her character is very interesting to watch, especially the ordeal she went through for love. We never knew how they started, except that their relationship went back as far as 10 years ago, so I can only deduce they started off in the same hospital as colleagues and she fell very very hard for him. I can understand women in love tend to be a bit blinded; in Min-joo's case, she is not really blinded. She knew what she was getting into, she knew what kind of man Soo-hyoung was, she knew he did what he did simply to hurt her so as to confirm the fact that she was still truly, madly and very much deeply in love with him. She knew it, he knew it and she was the one who had to bear all consequences of him knowing that one singular fact; she loved him more than he loved her, and that was very obvious from episode 1. He did love her, in his own special I don't care type of way, if not he wouldn't have stayed around with her for 10 years. But he simply can't help but hurt her as well, by saying things like "Have I ever said I was ever going to marry you?". His was always a question, and her answer was always complete silence, because he was right; he never did say he will marry her or that he loved her. But she stuck around, hoping for one day he would change. When she became very sick, she woke up realising maybe she can let go of her feelings for Soo-hyoung and she decided to leave the hospital, but Soo-hyoung stopped her. She agreed to stay on the condition he leaves her alone and yet she allows him to walk in and out of her apartment as and when he likes and reluctantly but still willingly cooked for him. But all along, she thought she could ignore her feelings. When Soo-hyoung proposed to Jun-ki's sister, she was hurt beyond words. And then she got very sick. After she recovered, she told Jun-ki, "When I started going out with him, I knew I had to be a stupid foolish woman. I don't want to be that woman anymore, I will always love him but now I have learned to control my feelings". But by then Soo-hyoung realised he loved her. The way he proposed to her was also like in a very careless manner; he simply gave her the ring and said let's get married but give him 1 month to settle some personal issues. When she found out the sister tried to kill herself for Soo-hyoung, she simply returned the ring to him, but when all the ugly truth about the hospital broke out and Jun-ki was very angry with Soo-hyoung, she didn't hate him. Instead she went back to him and simply said "I want back my ring" and went on to drinking with him and simply said "If you have something to tell me, you better tell me now before I get drunk. If you don't want me to listen, wait a couple minutes; I'll be drunk soon". He then told her about his past, why he was seeking revenge and Min-joo finally thought she understood him but of course Soo-hyoung in his usual manner said "You thought you understand me, you don't. I never understood myself until I found out about this..." but the truth was Min-joo understood him perfectly. So Min-joo went back to him.

It may seem very tiresome to watch this woman going back and forth again and again but if you watched from episode 1, her character and her interaction with Soo-hyoung provided many classic moments that I believe in actual reality could happen. Their dialogue is very realistic, the way they interact is also very real and that kinda give me an impression that this couple could exist and utter those lines that seems very realistic.

One of the most heartfelt moment that even Soo-hyoung could feel was when he was very sick and he was in physical pain, Min-joo hugged him tightly and cried more dramatically, as if his physical pain could never match the emotional pain she was going through as she was looking at the love of her life in pain. I do think everytime Soo-hyoung feels pain, Min-joo felt it hundred times more. That was how much she loved him. Although he played her up, again and again, and never turning up for their wedding, she forgave him again and again. I guess that what love is and in a way Soo-hyoung loved her too. He may dictate the way the relationship is going, he also realise his death will cause her perhaps pain for a lifetime and he can't dictate that. If there was a sequel, I believe this character of Min-joo will live out the rest of her life alone. It is sad but in a way Soo-hyoung is one lucky guy.

If there is an indication on what kinda of relationship Soo-hyoung and Min-joo has, it is revealed somewhat in a scene where he just turned up one night, grab her and made love to her. Thereafter, I can't remember what she said but Soo-hyoung sarcastically said "What? Do you feel raped? That was what you said the first time we were together" and she said "That was because I wasn't ready back then" and he said "Do you feel raped now?" and she simply quietly replied "I am always ready after the first time". That is quite an indication isn't it?

All in all a very intriguing character forming a very inrtiguing couple. You feel sorry for Min-joo sometimes but you can't help but feel she brought this upon herself.

The actress Lee Young Ae
I never thought Lee Young Ae was a great actress, and I only seen her in 3 shows thus far. In JSA she was pretty but not very much uitilised and her performance was not memorable for me. In Dae Jang Geum she was monotone and sulky and at times boring and without much personality. I thought her performance got worse and worse. In Last Present she was as sulky but I thought her performance was moving and very watchable but still not as great as some would claim her to be. In this series I would think this is one of her earlier works. If you think she looks old now, I must mention that she looks the same even in this series which was made in 1997. Prettier, fresher but still as mature looking. So you might think her pairing with Jang Dong Gun as odd, since he had this baby face kinda looks. But oddly enough, I do think they paired off very well and their chemistry was very convincing. In fact I like this pairing more than the All About Eve pairing, since I see these two as equals and their banters were very interesting to watch. Lee Young Ae is as sulky in here as she was in all her other works but in here she has every right to be sulky since her character was often disappointed by Soo-hyoung. I was also a bit shocked that this series also boasted a lot of intimate scenes between herself and Jang Dong Gun and yet oddly enough I kinda hoped in real life it would be great if they were a real couple because they look so good together. I must say more on the intimate scenes; the kissing may be fake, but the throwing her on the bed, hiking up her skirts, ripping of her blouse were all real. There was also quite an extensive scene on Min-joo and Soo-hyoung making love although too dark to see much but still the suggestion is there and many such suggestive scenes.

But I find the most intimate scenes are often the non sexual ones and often times her best scenes like the way she ran after him when he simply left after waiting for awhile, the hurt in her eyes when she saw him kissing another woman (he did it deliberately), the way she hugged him tightly when he was in pain or those scenes where they were sitting far apart and yet the intensity is there. The scene where she cried as she held on to his lifeless body was very touching. I mean this woman spent 10 years waiting for this guy, finally he confessed he loved her and then he had to die. Kinda like injustice here being perpetrated! Anyway, I like Lee Young Ae's performance in here. A very good performance and she paired off perfectly with Jang Dong Gun.

The Character of Kim Jun-ki
This character seems condemned to killing wives on the operating table for the 1st half of this series. First his own wife, then his best friend's wife. How his best friend's wife died also was really Soo-hyoung's fault for distracting him, on purpose. In fact I was appalled at Soo-hyoung and disliked him even more. From episode one we all know he is the less popular brother and perhaps the less gifted in medicine and definitely the more mild mannered one who refused to take risks. Like I said, he is the doctor, Soo-hyoung the typical surgeon. But he is the more respected older brother; his older colleagues respected him and distrust Soo-hyoung. After all that has been done on him and his sister, he still finds it in his heart to forgive Soo-hyoung, by quietly saying "Please go back to Min-joo..." because he and Min-joo are friends though I thought they looked more intimate than just friends. And he forgave Soo-hyoung for everything when Min-joo told him about Soo-hyoung's revenge and all and about his illness, after all he can't deny his grandfather did all those things. Like he said to Soo-hyoung; "Mother and I have never seen you as an outsider" but Soo-hyoung of course smirked and sarcastically said "Really? Me, the enemy's son?". Can't blame him since he overheard his adopted mother said "How can I love an enemy's son who caused the death of my husband? I tried hard but I can't". His relationship with Regina and his short bout of amnesia was boring to the core. His best scenes were often with Jang Dong Gun and Lee Young Ae. I was hoping his character might fall for Min-joo because they seem very close but no such things which is good in way because then it would be too usual type of storyline. His chemistry with Regina was non existent. His character became interesting only when he was facing dilemma or when interacting with the other 2 main characters.

The actor, Son Chang Min
Performance wise, this actor was absolutely excellent. He has this kind caring patient older brother look. Not as good looking as Jang Dong Gun (who is, right?) but somehow his Jun-ki is very attractive because he seems like such a stable kinda guy who would make a promise and has every intention of keeping it unlike Soo-young who is those kind who makes a promise and has every intention of breaking it as the promise was made to gain something. He has a temper but in appropriate times. I think this actor made this boring character interesting. His best scene was almost ending scene as he was in the helicopter holding tightly the container and quietly crying. Why, I won't tell you. You have to watch this series youself but I think you can guess; since this is a Korean flick, think DRAMATIC, OVER THE TOP type of scenario and I would say you nailed the ending. Excellent performance, at times more confident than Jang Dong Gun's. I wonder what happened to this actor? Is he still acting?

The character of Regina
One word; pure. That's the whole aura of Regina and well boring. For someone who is about to die of heart failure, she can still go bicycling. A very strenous exercise mind you, especially for someone with her delicate condition.

The actress who acted as Regina
I think for every Korean star, especially women, there is a HK/Taiwan counterpart that looks like them. This girl reminds me of our Malaysian actress whose name escapes me right now. The one who was in Kindred Spirit. Less saucy but similar looks. Performance very bad, no chemistry with Son Chang-min and very boring. Only time interesting was when she was with Jang Dong Gun because he made her look interesting.

The others
I saw Kang Deok Gu of Dae Jang Geum! Really like him. Much younger here though. Very good performance. Saw that bad doctor from Dae Jang Geum also, but this time playing a good friend and a good doctor. Good performance also, but nothing ever happens to his character anyway. Saw many actors and actresses walk in and out of any scenes, most were good for the little time they had on screen. None are memorable enough to mention though.

Some Aspects Analyzed
Doctors or Thugs?
In a way this series is quite defamatory of doctors. It shows doctors giving special privileges to special patients, receiving bribes, making underhanded deals with pharmacutical companies and worst of all, in fighting between seniors. When faced with extreme pressure, a senior is shown slapping a junior from another team, and I mean really slap. Then the seniors from that team hunt down this reckless senior and basically punched the daylights out of him. Then the bigger senior meets with the other team's bigger senior and started to exchange heated comments. Sometimes I wonder are they doctors or gangsters?

And in many series I have seen the Koreans beating people in such a way; they prefer to either kick your legs or really really slap your face until your hair fly all over your face. Seen this is Dae Jang Geum, Friend, The Coast Guard, Winter Sonata and now in this series. Is this a norm? Especially the kicking the legs part?

Good doctors or prone to negligence?
Negligence means mistakes which are not deliberate. The way this series goes, I am surprised the hospital is not wound up yet (as in bankrupt). Almost every other episode a patient dies because of the doctor's mistake, and make that the worst mistake. Like misdiagnosing an illness when a simple scan may correct that problem, accidentally cut the main vein of the patient, wrong surgical procedures, accidentally giving a higher dosage of I think maybe morphine and the worst mistake of all, and probably every doctor's worst nightmare, in a heart transplant, the ambulance meets with an accident, the heart dropped out of the ice box, the doctor having to take the plastic containing the heart and the essential fluid maintaining the heart in good transplant condition leaking and finally arriving at the OR with the patient's old heart already removed awaiting for the new heart and it arrives maybe an hour late with the fluid all drained out and the heart as dry as a stone, thereby rendering it simply useless for transplant. This happened to Soo-hyoung.

Of course in all these cases the hospital was never sued either because the hospital covered up the negligence, the patients were too poor to sue or simply accepted it as fate (like that heart transplant) or in Soo-hyoung's father's case, he vanished after he sued the company, presumably killed by the hospital. Really extreme cases if you ask me.

The Best Case
Very difficult to say. But I do think that heart transplant mishap can happen, may have happened and not something I like happening to me. But the most emotionally charged had to be the one where Min-joo's old patient begged her to kill him as he laid in extreme pain dying from brain cancer. Min-joo could never do that since it is called euthanasia. The old man's family heard his wishes. Then one day Min-joo ordered for I think morphine to be given to the patient, I actually thought she did it deliberately but actually it was an accident when the nurse misheard Min-joo as saying give it to the patient all at once and the patient died. Min-joo could not defend herself as she couldn't explain the mistake and she felt guilty as she did thought about killing the patient. The best scene in this case was the patient's family storming into her room and accusing her as the murderer and really threw things and almost hit her. They even refused to let her leave, locked the door and her colleagues had to knock down the door and carry them out. If there is one thing that I like about Korean series is their ability to go to the extreme with really the most realistic scenario. I was just a bit disappointed nobody told the family that the father wanted to die anyway but of course as doctors they can't say that. Worse was the hospital didn't even defend Min-joo. Very selfish hospital. Luckily Soo-hyoung found the evidence that it wasn't Min-joo's fault.

The Best Scene
Every scene between Soo-hyoung and Min-joo is best for me but the one I liked most and the most memorable thus far had to be the one where Min-joo was leaving for Seoul at the airport. She was looking around, probably for Soo-hyoung. Since Soo-hyoung is such a hot and cold person even I didn't know if he will be there to stop her. In the last minute a hand grabbed her hand and she dramatically flung around and there was Soo-hyoung. Next scene she was in his flashy car, which meant she missed her flight. I cheered of course.

The Worst Scene
Every scene of Regina and Soo-hyoung's older brother and all the scenes when he had some memory lost. Boring to the core.

Most Heartfelt Dialogue
Can't remember much but those I remembered was uttered by Min-joo as her heart was broken again and again and everything she uttered was truly devastating. But to me two scenes stuck in my mind. Soo-hyoung was sitting alone in Min-joo's apartment in the dark, and then he realised he was really dying. Cool as he was, he banged on the coffee table angrily and cried "I don't want to die! I can't die! I don't want to die!!". Of course with Regina he learned how to accept death, in fact to embrace it.

Another scene was his adoptive mother who once declared that she couldn't love an enemy's son came by to see Soo-hyoung in his hotel room I think. She knew he was sick then. Soo-hyoung told her "I don't hate you. If I were you, I wouldn't have been able to welcome my enemy's son into my own home, more so take care of him all these years". I guess in some ways he didn't hate her, but he definitely hated the grandfather. She tearfully looked at him and hugged him and said "Come home" and it was a tearful embrace. It was a very moving scene and to me when she said come home to this man who kinda caused her father in law's death and broke the heart of her daughter, I thought that was a very nice way to end their silent war.

Best Dialogue
The very first one by Soo-hyoung to Min-joo, "Did I ever say I love you to you? Did I ever ask you to wait for me? Did I ever say we are a couple?". Every word stung the heart of Min-joo and she was so very quiet. Very realistic dialogue, mean but still plausible. I must mention the one where Jun-ki ran away from home and Soo-hyoung wasn't a least bit worried. His adoptive mother looked at him and asked "Don't you worry about your brother? Don't you care?". Something like that. Not the best but memorable.

Best Couple
Definitely and without a doubt Min-joo and Soo-hyoung. Somehow Korean dramas is so successful in creating believable relationships, one we can hate, grow to like, love, and every pain and happiness the characters went through can be so very enjoyable as if the viewers were involved somehow. Of course the ending was very cruel to this couple. Somehow K-dramas are also very morbid, during that time most of their dramas ended in tragedy of some scale, the question is whether the character died happy or died happy. Yes, there is no sad death. Either from some incurable disease or best of all car accident. I feel very depressed after watching this series, in a way I feel so sorry for Min-joo but yet in a way feel very happy for her as well as at last she got her man, even if for a very short time. Like when she knew he was sick and he was still acting like he didn't care a thing and arrogant as hell, she tearfully said to him "I want to marry you. I don't care for how long, a month or a day, I want to be your wife". How long have I not heard such dialogue? A long time. Definitely one of TV's most memorable couple for the fact that either they spent their time apart in a miserable way or together in an even more miserable way and yet no doubt, both love each other deeply, in a very different way from one another.

Jang Dong Gun and Lee Young Ae truly make a very compatible couple and since Lee Young Ae is actively involved in movies now, I hope they will star in a movie together.

Best & Worst Aspects
16 episodes is very short in my opinion, but also not really the best aspect as some things must be edited and the series felt disjointed, like something was missing. Like Soo-hyoung being angry with Min-joo about something earlier on and yet I didn't know what.

Having BM subtitles is good but not also the best aspect, should be the worst aspect because frankly, either the words come out too fast or don't come out at all. Very frustrating. I can't bear to watch the Mandarin version because I simply love to hear the sarcasm in Soo-hyoung's voice and Min-joo's gentle patience in hers.

Very memorable characters, even the older brother, boring as he may be alone or with Regina but still memorable in many ways because of the unfortunate crisis he went through again and again. For me the most memorable is not Soo-hyoung. He is exciting, interesting, frustrating and overall very fun to watch. But it was Min-joo and her silence that got to me that made her the most memorable to me. The way she ran after Soo-hyoung as he went barging in and out of the hospital, her entire life seems to revolve around his mood, whether good, nasty or playful. In his life there was no place for her and yet she managed to stay in his life but often pushed aside, but she still persists in this what seem to be a very hopeless relationship. Some may be very offended with her attitude but after going through sayyyyy 10 episodes of all these stuff, I think I kinda understood why she stuck by. Quite simply, she loved him and whatever his flaws may be, she loved him still. That to me is very moving and for that I find this character very foolish but memorable.

Jang Dong Gun, handsome as he is but still very young looking but still handsome no matter what. His performance is very good and evenly matched by the very pretty Lee Young Ae. I think this is one of the other two performance of hers that I really like, the other is the tear jearker Last Present. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that she had this "I'm doom" kinda expression that fitted Min-joo. Min-joo rarely smiled, and always in emotional pain. I must also mention Jun-ki as one of the best aspect. Not handsome but I still like him and find his face very agreeable.

The medical scenes are good, and the various ways of possible neglience suits are very eye opening if you ask me. But it is also one of the worst aspect in the sense that I thought Soo-hyoung is a lung expert, but he seems and is confirmed as a heart surgeon and yet he seems like an expert in everything. It seems 1 year in USA gave him like a wealth of ideas in medicine which I find patronising. You can't blame me for mistaking this expertise because

1. in his room there is always an x-ray of someone's body, and I thought maybe lungs but in actual fact the heart

2. BM translation kept writing "dada" and yes "dada" is chest which means heart but I thought lungs which is actually "paru-paru". The more accurate BM word for heart is "jantung".

And the way the hospital is ran is like thugs running the show. That to me is one of the worst aspect.

The ending is seriously one of the best ending I have ever seen for the fact that it was morbid and daring but also one of the worst because in my mind I wanted something else to happen.

Interesting Aspect
Neither good nor bad, just interesting was the scene where Soo-hyoung strutted into the room where Min-joo was lying in coma and Jun-ki was there too, disgusted with his I don't care about Min-joo type of attitude when he did. He was sarcastic and when Jun-ki asked why he was there to see Min-joo since he didn't care, he just turned to Jun-ki and said that was because he wanted to be there and Min-joo wanted him to be there and he arrogantly said "Min-joo always listen to my instructions, if I tell her to wake up she will wake up... Min-joo ah...I am here..you better wake up now or I'll leave! Wake up Min-joo" and he turned to leave not expecting Min-joo to wake up but right at that moment, Min-joo woke up from her coma! Even Soo-hyoung was shocked at how obedient Min-joo was. Very interesting scene.

Verdict
A very enjoyable series that is well written in some parts, realistic in many ways with very memorable scenes and very good performances. It is great to watch your favourite stars' early performances and to know what made them who they are today. Some performances may look raw but you will discover diamonds in the rough. I absolutely enjoyed this series and I kinda felt depressed after watching the last episode and this shows how effective this series was. I definitely recommend this one although a bit of film touch up would do wonders to the quality of the series. It felt grainy and it felt old. Anyway try to get one with better subtitles so as not to kill your mood. Jang Dong Gun and Lee Young Ae's fans must get this one.

Reel or Real?
One scene had me wondering did Jang Dong Gun did it for real? That was the scene where he was in extreme pain and so he needed to inject himself with painkillers. Most scene we see are inject but never see the needle going in. This one scene where he was lying across the desk in his office and I saw him pushing the needle of the syringe in and then out and I thought I saw a drop of blood forming on top of that punctured skin! Really real blood! I was convinced; he did that for real!

Discrepancies In Description Of Synopsis
I am quite surprised how inaccurate some synopsis are and they can be very misleading.

This was what was printed on the VCD cover;

"Kim Jun-ki (Son Chang-min) and Kim Soo-hyoung (Jang Dong-gun) are brothers practicing in the same hospital. Their kinship, however, does not imply they are blood relatives. Cha Min-joo (Lee Young-ae) is Kim Soo-hyoung's girlfriend who has been going out with Kim for years without knowing Kim's playful attitude towards love. An accident happens all out of sudden, sparking off drastic changes in their lives."

There are only 2 or 3 mistakes but I would deem them major mistakes.

Mistake no. 1
"Cha Min-joo (Lee Young-ae) is Kim Soo-hyoung's girlfriend who has been going out with Kim for years without knowing Kim's playful attitude towards love."

She knew he has a playful attitude towards love. I wouldn't deem kissing another woman in front of her, deliberately to hurt her and pushing her away when he didn't need her and beckoning her to him when he wants her is called playful. It is downright a very bastard sort of thing to do. And worse still, she knew all along and yet she accepted every insults he thrown at her (and I deem what he did as an insult to her) because she loved him and knew she can't bargain much since he knew she loved him more than he loved her. He dictated the rules and she followed them and no other way around that.

Mistake no. 2
"Kim Jun-ki (Son Chang-min) and Kim Soo-hyoung (Jang Dong-gun) are brothers practicing in the same hospital. Their kinship, however, does not imply they are blood relatives."

This is like an oxymoron of some sort. Brothers and yet not blood relatives. Maybe it should have been clearer to state that Soo-hyoung is adopted? And what kinship? It sounded like their relationship was rosy and happy when it should have been rivals in the same hospital or rather one sided rivalry.

Mistake no. 3
"An accident happens all out of sudden, sparking off drastic changes in their lives."

Well something drastic happened but not that one drastic event caused the changes. It was cumulative and what accident I wondered? The entire sentence was more like for suspense and drama only when it is not even the case. I am still wondering; what accident? I thought Soo-hyoung would be involved in an accident that revealed the fact that he was adopted but heck! He knew since he was 6 when he was adopted what! I am still wondering.

My Alternative Ending
SPOILERS!

In this series Soo-hyoung committed suicide and donated his heart to Regina. For a moment I thought he asked a doctor to kill him and extract his heart but actually no such over the top scenes. But I was thinking, if this series was remade, what could have been done differently? For one the ending.

I would want Jun-ki to be sick, and not Soo-hyoung. Since Soo-hyoung is so arrogant and all, it would be nice to show him changing into a better man without having the necessity to kill him off. Jun-ki should be sick, and during the times he was sick Soo-hyoung should go through a phase where he realised Jun-ki was indeed very good as an older brother and in the process and in an ironic twist would take over running the hospital and the household, but this time without malice and become a better man in the process. He would then marry Min-joo and mellow down.

I want this ending because it is still sad as someone will die (a required necessity in most K-dramas which would satisfy viewers who want to see death) and yet it is positive and happy (a rarity in most dramas without being sickeningly sweet and preachy which would satisfy viewers who want to see a good and happy ending). I am one of those viewers who wants a good end for Soo-hyoung. He shouldn't die, not because he is Jang Dong Gun but because in this series he is introduced as someone who is very good at what he does. Someone with such delicate hands and talent in healing the sick physically should be given a chance to flourish and learn to heal the sick emotionally which in this series Soo-hyoung never did since he lived his way, he died his way.

And definitely cut out several unnecessary characters.

Doctor! Doctor! Who Is Worse?
Let's see...Soo-hyoung is a surgeon first, a doctor second.

Reminds me of one of TV's most memorable surgeon, Dr Jeffrey Geiger of Chicago Hope. Very arrogant and his only friend was his best friend the mild mannered neurosurgeon, Dr Aaron Shutt. Why I can still remember their names because the 1st season of Chicago Hope introduced who was perhaps TV's most memorable surgeon because he had such an attitude problem but he was excellent in doing his job. I always remember one particular quote in that series where one of the doctor's I think said you may hate him him you would want to be on his operating table. The same can be said about Soo-hyoung but Soo-hyoung is really not that bad.

Another came to my mind is TV's newest doctor with an attitude problem, Dr Gregory House of House MD. Apart from Lost, this series is one of those I simply can't miss. He is a diagnosis doctor, a specialist who spends his time diagnosing an ailment. I think his is closest to the truth about doctors; they heal before they diagnose! Anyway, his arrogance is to this extent where he told his subordinate in what is probably the most memorable lines I have heard this year when he was accused as being arrogant;

"Your opinion of me won't change my opinion of myself but it might change my opinion of you..."

But he is really not that bad too. I think Soo-hyoung is worse because Soo-hyoung can be malicious and he really just wanted to do certain procedures whilst Dr House do care about the patients eventhough he refused to meet them.

So really, Soo-hyoung is like in between I guess.

HKTVB Version
I noticed a lot of Korean stars have a lookalike in HK entertainment world. If this series is remade I recommend the following...

Soo-hyoung
Kevin Cheng. He has that smirk and devilish charm and for once I want to see him in a breakout role. I would love to see how he would interprete this role.

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO ...: I would bet Joe Ma since he is everywhere these days, irrespective of the fact that he doesn't have an ounce of charisma to carry this role.

Jun-ki
Very difficult choice but I would feel Moses Chan can carry the gentleness in this character. Moreover he is supposed to be older and lesser looking but still as charismatic as the younger brother. So they don't look alike but they're not supposed to be related in the first place.

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO ...: I have a feeling either Bowie Lam or if the above character of Soo-hyoung already given to someone else, Joe Ma. I won't complain about Bowie but I feel Moses is more gentler.

Regina
Very difficult choice since she is ultra boring. I like Myolie Wu to be given this gentle role to see how she interpretes this role.

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO...: Shirley Yeung since she is so pure and all. Good choice also since it lives up to the boringness of the original actress but with an added special effects on the parts of the viewers; we will vomit blood.

Jun-ki's sister
She is the sister, very small role. Very difficult choice but I think Niki Chow will do.

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO...: Most probably Nikki Chow since she is everywhere these days.

Min-joo
Ahhhh very difficult choice. I like Maggie Cheung since she gives an impression she is a very strong person and so it would be interesting to see how she interpretes this role as Min-joo goes running after Soo-hyoung. BUT Kevin Cheng does look a bit too young for her though he is obviously older...second choice is Charmaine Sheh for a very simple reason; the clingy character of Min-joo suits her.

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO...: Name every other names you can think of. Top of the list is probably Gigi Lai. Melissa Ng no way since she looks too old for Kevin Cheng irrespective of her actual age. After Gigi Lai I have a feeling maybe Kenix Kwok. But I just have this dreaded feeling maybe, just maybe Sonija Kwok. All very bad choices.

The grandfather
Who else? Chun Pui lar!

BUT TVB WOULD GIVE THIS ROLE TO...: Probably Yu Yeung since Chun Pui may be too expensive to hire.

To Get Unstuck In Time [TVB]

Written by Funn Lim

"Just get by your disbelief that Kiki Sheung can be Roger Kwok's mother and still this series is boring to the core."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Title Deciphered
English title is just silly. Chinese title is better; "Kak sai jui hung" which quite literally means In Pursuit Of The Wrongdoers Across Generations". Something like that.

Released In
2004

Cast
I only know a few.

Roger Kwok - Morning Sir (because his name is Tin Kwong which means morning)
Flora Chan - Ko San / Nicole
Patrick Tang
Kok Fung
Kiki Sheung - believe it or not, Roger's mother
Sek Sau

Summary
Basically how estranged father and son patched things up although father has been dead for 20 years and how one man's desire to help the woman he loves changes the destiny of their lives forever.

Comments
I won't be bothered with the plot because quite frankly the plot is really out of this world and meant to be. In fact I didn't even want to write a review for this series if not for requests by my net friends and also because I just thought the last episode merit a review in itself. So I will divide this review through a few aspects but I think you already know how I feel about this series.

Plot
The concept is a 80% rip off from a not so well known American movie, Frequency starring Dennis Quaid as the father (I think he was a fireman, can't quite remember) and Jim Caviezel I think as the policeman son and the story centred on a serial killer and how they communicated through an old radio. It wasn't really that great a movie but compared to this series, it is at least consistent and coherent.

The problem with this series is it is basically a detective story. All those things about communicating with the dead father (who 20 years ago was very much alive) through an old handphone that the father was using 20 years before which was zapped by lighting in present time are just gimmick. The real story is detective work, solving cases and finding suspects with the help of the father since most cases are 20 year old and after a few episodes it got really tiring.

And when everything settled down, Morning Sir requested the father to help prevent an accident which would cause paralysis to Ko San, a perky crime writer who so happens to be Morning Sir's girlfriend because she was feeling that she was a burden to him and then zoom back suddenly Morning Sir woke up and whilst things looked the same, things wasn't. For one Ko San became Nicole, the adopted daughter of a feared gang leader, Morning Sir was going out with her sister, Sek Sau whom he saved in the 1st half was again in prison and her mother still hated his father who died naked on the bed of a prostitute when in previous 1st half they found out that the father was perhaps framed. And so we have to watch the repeat on how Morning Sir set things right, how Sek Sau got out of prison, etc etc etc and how Nicole became more and more out of control whilst Morning Sir tried very hard to explain why he seems to keen on her.

Not only were they repetetive, the entire 2nd half was like wasting time except to see Flora Chan looking rather cool as the cold blooded Nicole. It wasn't a detective story after that, it became like "Save Nicole" series.

But the ending was the worst.

From the start we all know the father died 20 years ago, in a way that brought shame to the mother and son. But through this series we discover the father was a very loving husband and father and couldn't have died the way he did. We will find out how he was framed although it wouldn't have made sense with the 1st half concept because his death is interlinked with the 2nd half concept. I will explain more on this later. But when Nicole's destiny was changed, son warned father not to go to a certain place at a certain time but the father did and then he was out of the picture. 20 years later suddenly Morning Sir was informed that the father disappeared 20 years ago and the mother who has since learn to hate the father for abandoning the family did not know where he went. Morning Sir was shocked of course because Nicole's destiny remained unchanged and yet the father didn't die. We then found out that not only he didn't die, when he was trying to rescue Nicole from the clucthes of kidnappers who kidnapped her and erased her memory so to speak and she became Nicole. Very sad alternate life. Anyway the father fell during the rescue and was hospitalised. There he was saved by a travelling monk who advised him to let fate takes its course as if he meddled with fate again, his son will not be destined to meet Nicole in future. Father was so enlightened by this that he disappeared himself and became a travelling monk. Basically his mother still hated the father 20 years later, got hooked up with Sek Sau (though not that clear in this series) whilst the father became a travelling monk happy and contented whilst Morning Sir will wait for Nicole who will have to spend 10 yars in prison for her previous triad activities.

And I thought this ending was just plain stupid.

Why would the father want to abandon the family? What exactly was so enlightening that the monk said that made a man turn his back on his wife and son? I mean ok, not save Nicole because fate blah blah yes I understand but to let go of his only son and wife just like that? That is just stupid noble thing you know. It's noble but unnecessarily noble.

Plot Holes/Mistakes
4 from what I can remember vividly.

The speed of recognition
That Morning Sir has for his father without questioning on why, how, where, what, when. Perhaps this is to say Morning Sir is a very superstitious man since such man wouldn't question how on earth he could contact his really very dead father through time.

Morning Sir's repeated reason to Nicole
That he was in love with her as Ko San, that she was a cripple but kind hearted sunny Ko San before he changed her fate to become cold blooded Nicole, that she should try and regain her memory. Am I the only one who understands the concept of alternate lives? If Nicole had never been crippled and she had never grow up in the environment like Ko San, and never met Morning Sir then clearly and surely and without any doubt whatsoever she wouldn't have any of those Ko San's memory. Either Morning Sir was desperate or he didn't understand the entire concept. He kept asking her to remember and said "If you can remember please do come back to me" when she had nothing to remember in the first place!

How the father died
First half I don't think it was ever explained how the father was framed or whether he was indeed framed. I assumed he was because he was such a good father and loving husband. In 2nd half or you may call that alternate life involving Nicole, we found out he died of drug overdose whilst trying to save Nicole from the cluctches of kidnappers who will later turn her into the adult Nicole. If this is the case, that doesn't explain how in the proper 1st half timeline the father could have died since the father never went there to save Nicole in the first place since Nicole didn't exist then, as she was crippled Ko San. I find this plot just hanging like that without a proper explanation and that is why this series does not have consistency.

Nicole's father(s)
As Nicole she calls most older guys in here as her daddy. Her real daddy whom she hated, her adoptive daddy who was a bisexual and her daddy who found her as a little girl who turned out to be a murderous psychopath who was using her all her life. Not plot holes or mistakes but very confusing if you miss an episode or two because you see her calling another man "Daddy".

The Usual TVB Stuff
Like a gay couple (most of the time male homosexuals) thrown in, some disability, some triangle love relationship or in this case rectangular/square, loads of people dying in the most impossible way with investigation concluded with an extra detailed confession each and every time and to throw us off the course, some ambigious character that really is nothing in the end.

But the worse of the usual stuff is sometimes just how perky some people eventhough they have impossibly non perky situation. I shall elaborate but let me make it clear. Having a disability like not being able to walk is really no big deal. THey should not be prejudiced nor should they feel sorry for themselves. For the amount of energy one can use to feeling sorry for themselves, might as well use that same energy for better use like perhaps living a quailty life by surrounded by loads of love for example. Ko San was exactly that. But what really got me thinking like in not a good way is how can someone so immobilised can be so mobilised? You know what I mean? That with her wheelchair she can go to so many places in such a short time. And amazingly, not because she can drive but because in one scene pursued by a dangerous killer, Morning Sir told her to go first. I wonder go where? Climb into her car herself? It doesn't solve the problem with who is going to fold the wheelchair for her. And that she can get anywhere in the shortest amount of time is so unbelievable. Is HK that disabled people friendly?

Richest Cop & Forensic Expert (ever!)
Morning Sir is a cop, and cops are not very highly paid. His father was a cop and supposedly died 20 years ago and insurance can't be much. His mother is a CSI or a forensic expert and therefore probably a bit higher pay but still wouldn't be much. So how come these two live in really the most luxurious looking house there is for 2 people who shouldn't be living in such huge homes? Morning Sir's room is bigger than Burning Flame's set meant for Wong Hei's character (and I mean the whole flat!). I sat with disbelief and my mind just tuned off when I saw the house.

Good scene
A very violent Nicole is what I like watching as she smashed the bottles on some guy's head and push the other guy's face into the boiling steamboat pot. Ouch!

Worst Scene
Everytime the phone got connected we have the same zoom into the phone, past the lines, wires and circuits ending at a computer chip with that same music background. Once ok, twice ok but each and everytime is just repetetive and wasting of precious 5 seconds.

Nonsensical Scene
Everything after Ko San disappears and we have Nicole. Whilst I like Nicole's character, the plots after she appeared seems rather pointless, repetetive and nonsensical. One of the worse was how many ways can the TV love confession scene can be done and indeed in this series at least 3 ways.

Performances Evaluated
Flora Chan
She was too old for her role as the perky and optimistic Ko San. And everytime she cried I couldn't understand a single word she uttered. Her performance as a disabled person is very unconvincing as she looked like someone sitting down rather than someone who can't stand up. But she fared better as the cold, bitchy, mean and cynical Nicole. In fact I thought her Nicole was cool and calm. Her kung fu action scenes need some practising thought but I enjoyed her performance was Nicole overall. Her make up suits her age and makes her look pretty. She should take on more of such roles that requires her to be dead pan with the least amount of facial expressions and lesser crying scenes. In fact no crying scenes please!

Patrick Tang
Inadequate performance of a very repetetive type of character because this series is repetetive. The scenes where he went bonkers and pin every blame on Morning Sir was horrible acting.

Sek Sau
This man as he gets older acts worse and worse. I absolutely despise his dead pan boring performance of an equally boring character.

Kiki Sheung
An insult to be Roger's mom. She ain't THAT old and even without make up she looked at best his older sister. Her performance was very good, again repetetive because her character is repetetive but still a competent performance. I could see the sadness, the loneliness, the bitterness in her eyes everytime she thought of her dead husband.

Roger Kwok
Horrible performance at first as his Morning Sir got easily irritated at the mere mention of his dad's name that there were times I could imagine the Psycho theme as he gets madder and madder. His performance improved somewhat later on but hampered by the fact that this series repeats itself and that his only concern is "Nicole! Nicole! Nicole!" to the point of that's the only thing he has in his mind and in the end it was a manic, rushed but repetetive performance that sometimes defies logic. One of his worst actually.

The rest are ok except for

-Kok Fung and that actor whose name I do not know who were rather convincing as a gay couple. Very affectionate.

- Lee Sze Chit as an insane serial killer cum leg chopper was quite simply manic looking. I deem it as an effective performance.

- can't remember his name but as Roger's father in this series for once this actor is given what could be almost equal amount of importance and screentime as Roger Kwok himself but it is a pretty lonely performance as most scenes he is always on the phone. An effective performance.

- the girl who plays Flora's sister is particularly inadequate. She can cry, she can get angry, she can get mean, she can laugh but then everyone can do that. I do not feel for her character and find her performance simply like acting, not much presence and not much substance.

- Lok Ying Kwan, a name I have remembered since Triumph In The Skies but I have seen him many many years before turned in an effective performance as a very heartless godfather of Flora's Nicole.

- Cheung Chi Kwong had very little to do except to act as Roger's sidekick but again he was effective.

It is hard to comment much since the characters are mostly cardboard types with little else to do but the veteran actors tried their best to give the character some sense but in the end came across as lame efforts because the story itself is weak to the core.

Verdict
Just get by your disbelief that Kiki Sheung can be Roger Kwok's mother and still this series is boring to the core. It is basically Frequency meets Butterfly Effects (though I have seen the former but not the latter) TVB style and since originally none of the characters are that engaging in the first place, after the 2nd reality tookover the characters rarely become interesting except for the character Nicole. The dual realities only make things more repetetive and therefore frustrating as seen that once seen it all so seeing again is like seen it twice. And most scenes are like detective work so you can also say this is DIF V if you must. This is not Roger's best work, it is one of his weakest work BUT fans of Flora Chan may want to watch this as the character of Nicole is intriguing for awhile before boredom takes over. One thing kept me going and that was how and why the father died and when he didn't die, it was how he escaped and why he never returned to the family. The explanation is I shall say stupid to the very core of common sense.

Unless you're any of the actor's biggest fan who can stomach anything and everything, give this sorry crappy series a miss and just rent the movie Frequency which is not the best movie but at least being only 2 hours long is a bonus.

The Scariest Thought
I fear the day Kiki Sheung will be Deric Wan's mother as they acted as lovers in Looking Back In Anger. But I think the day will come sooner for Maggie Siu first and that is really a very scary thought.

A Handful of Love [TVB]

Written by Funn Lim

"Believe me, you have done nothing wrong to deserve this crappy stuff. You can do so much better and you must learn to love yourself enough not to subject yourself to this nonsense."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Title Dechiphered
The chinese title is very catchy and explained the plot of this series generally. Literally, One House, Two Families, Three Surnames. One house means they all live under one roof, two families refer to Joe Ma and Jess on one side and the 5 children on the other (as they're not their offspring) and 3 surnames refer to Joe, Jess and the 5 children. The 5 children are Joe's sister's children, so naturally they all have different surnames from Joe.

That is about the only thing that is most interesting about this series.

Released In
2004

No. Of Episodes
20, way too long.

Cast
I am not familiar with the names of the characters or even all the children but those that I know of ...

Joe Ma - Uncle/Husband
Jessica Hester Hsuen - Aunty/Wife
Lee Sze Chit - Scriptwriter/best friend of Joe
Mimi Lo - Music teacher
Rebecca Chan - Serial bride/aunty of Jess
Liu Kai Chi - Professor /I think 4th husband of Rebecca

And many more forgettable adults.

As for the children, I do not know their names but their character description are as follows:-

Eldest - a boy, teenager, probably 17
Second - a sporty girl, teenager
Third - a boy barely 12 I think, should be the thin scrawny potential male chauvinist pig
Fourth - a boy, also barely 12, chubby, wants to become a sportsman
Fifth - probably 6 or 7 year old girl who looks like BUT is not Jenny Shing

Summary
5 children became orphans when their doctor-father died 4 years ago from some disease and they were left in the care of their uncle, Joe a music teacher who married Aunty Jess, a director with a local production house (TVB perhaps?). The children did not know their father died as Uncle Joe promised not to tell until much much later.

4 years on, the children are well adjusted kids thinking their dad is on some mercy mission in some poor African country. Uncle Joe and Aunty Jess pretended to be their father by writing to them. At this time, Joe has given up on his career and became a house husband but do give private music lessons whilst Aunty Jess is gaining reputation as a film maker who works and brings back the food.

Every 2 episodes or so we are presented with familial problems and the solutions. We have a child who thinks his uncle is a sissy, a chubby boy who is afraid to reveal his ambition, a young man in love with an aspiring singer, a little girl who thinks she is the most pitiful orphan in the world as she thought when Uncle and Aunty has children out she goes and at last, suspiscion of infidelity, a woman who has to choose between family or career and a man who has to learn to deal with his wife's ultimate decision.

Basically this is a series which attempts to talk about values and family and love and sibling-hood. At the time of writing this review, I am about 1 episode short of the ending and I dare to speculate, with a premise like that, from episode 1 I already knew this series is going to end in a sickeningly happy way. Never for a moment would I believe it will end in a divorce or even a death of another which makes this series highly predictable and therefore ultimately mundane and boring. But that's not the worst aspect of this series. So ok, I predict happy ending.

Comments
It's easy to guess from the tone of my summary of this series that I do not think highly of this series. I don't hate it. Hate is too much of an emotion to waste on such a non-happening series. You can say I dislike it because to say otherwise would give too much credit to this series.

Frankly I have never heard of this series but I do recall watching some promo of it in K-100. It was like come and go type of series that no one would really get excited about, unless you're like the biggest fan of Jess and Joe. It is what I call a filler - to fill in time slots until another series comes along. I also had problems looking for reviews of this series, except for one at SPCNET which was quite a positive review. Feedback could be read which quite rightly pointed out that this series is about values and teaching the young ones values. This series to me is like a much too long public service announcement. What the values are is for you to interprete but my real question is can a youngster ever sit long enough to be bothered with these so called values?

Like I said, this series is non-happening. From episode 1 you will know how ep 20 will be like. To give it a twist ending is like killing the very fabric of value this series is trying to teach; togetherness, no matter the surname I guess. For a series which attempts to bring to light the problems faced by youngsters, adults and families alike, I find the messages and the way it was presented shallow, dumb and many times very infuriating.

Maybe I should just drop my formal type of review writing in here and just tell you why this series is really one of the worst I have never seen.

First thing first, I hate preachy type of series. This series isn't those preachy type, but it almost became one each and every episode. So being short of preachy, I would say this series attempts to preach to an audience that doesn't care, such as I. There are many ways to preach, there are many ways to showcase good values and problems and solutions but to adopt the name of our Malaysian toll payment system, that is Touch N Go is simply a slap on the viewers' face; like we are supposed to believe all that nonsense?

What nonsense you may ask. The biggest nonsense there is; a script that has no sense of reality and forever stuck in the time warp of the 50s.

I am not a feminist; I like to be loved and I love chilvary and yet I also believe a woman must have a chance to build a career and still have a family at the same time. I believe the only major difference between a man and a woman is only the physical difference, but mentally and spiritually both can outdo one another and still can compliment one another. So when this series first started, the first 2 episodes or so nearly make me weep. I can't believe Jess would even bother with such a nonsensical material.

Let me explain.

The scrawny one became very ashamed of his Uncle Joe as he doesn't really work, he wears an apron at the house, he cooks and cleans whilst Aunty Jess goes off to work in her usual jacket and pants bringing home the dole. He thought his Uncle Joe became a sissy and lost respect for his uncle despite the fact that his uncle genunine cared and loved him. Aunty Jess and Uncle Joe realised they have a serious pre-MCP problem here and so Aunty Jess thought it was time to teach this boy the real gender roles and differences. And so what did she do? She proposed that Uncle Joe need not cook nor clean, she will do the cooking and the cleaning as a woman should do and she will go to work where she is required to climb up and down a hill by wearing the proper attire women should wear, like skirt, high heels and blouse. She was already working long hours but she had to rush home to cook. The children had their dinners and quickly left the dinner table whilst she cleaned up, washed up and basically do everything. Uncle Joe wanted to help but Aunty Jess said "No, I want the show to the boy proper gender differences ..." and so Uncle Joe had no choice but to let her be. Of course the boy later learned his lesson when he realised his Uncle Joe made the best food compared to other fathers who never had time for their children and so he no longer see Uncle Joe as a sissy anymore. A happy end to a miserable problem.

Or is it?

I am always all for the bigger picture type of plot. I may have sometimes accused TVB of writing stories that are all about smaller pictures that somehow bigger pictures are ignored, like you know bigger values, like between the devil and the deep blue sea type of scenario. This series does not have such big problems but for me values too have small values and big values. Of course it is great to teach the young ones about gender differences but by so called teaching them right is actually inputing all the wrong notions will only give out the wrong message.

I thought what is so wrong with Uncle Joe cooking and Aunty Jess working? Why to set things right Aunty Jess had to go back to the 50s just to show how manly Uncle Joe is? Is letting your wife work half dead and then doing the cooking and cleaning also a very manly thing to do? I was hoping perhaps Uncle Joe or Aunty Jess sit down and knock some sense into that boy but they didn't; they played along with the boy's strict MCP attitude and that was what made me dislike this movie from episode 1. To be fair Uncle Joe wanted to help but I find it disturbing in the end the boy thought it was ok for Uncle Joe to cook and clean but on the question of what the boy thought of Aunty Jess adopting a rather masculine role in the family was not answered. The boy is still a MCP, maybe a more metrosexual type of MCP.

But there is also a bigger problem in that scenario I described above. Many feedback wrote that this series is about values and therefore is entertaining in that aspect. What values I ask you? I was very specific in my description above and maybe I should highlight the particular sentence to see if you agree with me;

"She was already working long hours but she had to rush home to cook. The children had their dinners and quickly left the dinner table whilst she cleaned up, washed up and basically do everything."

Right after they all had their dinner, they all ran away from the dinner table and Aunty Jess and Uncle Joe were left to do the cleaning up. This time I ask you; what about the lesser but equally important value like responsibility? Are the children, from the teenaged boy to the youngest girl suffering from some incurable disease or are handicapped in some ways? If not why can't they take the plates, spoons, chopsticks and glasses into the kitchen and help Aunty Jess to clean up? I don't think I have even seen them lifting a broom and so who is left to clean up after them? Of course Uncle Joe! Do you see what I am talking about?

What is this series trying to tell us?

But that's just the beginning of the problem.

We have then the story about the chubby one wanting to become a sportsman but because of his weight was reluctant to tell his uncle and aunty. When Uncle Joe found out, he encouraged the boy. So I thought well maybe squash, badminton, football, tennis, hockey, golf, whatever but nope; they took the boy to do gymnastic. I didn't quite catch the boy's ambition and even if he said gymnastic, I would think the writer could do better by choosing a more appropriate sport. I am sorry to say this but that boy is way too chubby to become a gymnast and way too late to start training as one. Why not something more believable like sayyyyyyyyy badminton??

Scripting problem? Definitely. Some more...

The children's father died 4 years ago. I assume the mother died way before that. For 4 years they did not know. When the eldest found out he was so angry he walked away from the Uncle and Aunty, accusing them of leaving their father rotting in the grave without any of his beloved children to visit him or to pay respect to him. I understand the anger and of course in the end his resentment for his uncle and aunty went away because he realised for 4 years they took care of him. Or to be more precise, economically they all depend on the aunty and uncle so it would be better if he just shut up, which was how I see it.

The problem here is not that. Then there is the scene where the father actually left a very emotional goodbye message to each and every of his children via videotape and then we have like the longest and most un-sentimental scene ever; each child's face is focussed much too long as they were watching that tape and of course they cried. I thank my lucky stars there were only 5 of them if not that scene would take forever to finish. It was supposed to be a touching scene but I find it all really stupid when the camera zoomed to the two adult actors (Joe and Jess) who were so bad in their acting the whole scene was spoilt. Their expression for lying to the children for 4 years was like "Oh so what?" when it should register a bit of guilt. The big boy was right after all; they did let the father rot in the grave in such a lonely fashion without any of the children paying respect to him.

So the problem again is scripting and of course acting. The problems and the solution for the adult problems is as shallow as the children.

I remember one scene where Jess was very angry with her husband for either kissing or being kissed on the cheeks by Mimi Lo I think in some party. It was an innocent kiss, he didn't tell her about it and so she was very angry and jealous. At the same time Jess was outstation working with a director friend and I think they spent the night in the same room, but nothing happened. Joe was angry because Jess didn't tell him. So there they were angry with one another and Jess kept going on and on about the kiss on the cheek whilst Joe did mention ONCE about the fact that she spent the night in a room with another man, although nothing happened. I was thinking wouldn't it be more realistic if Joe were to say "Look, I got only a kiss on the cheek, but you spent the night in a room with this man. Seriously honey, which is worse?". Of course it is a bad sarcastic question but more logical than him looking meek and she looking cross...doesn't make sense. I mean argue also must argue realistically...

There are worse to come.

Jess got offered to go to Hollywood to become assistant director to this male director friend for 6 months. Joe was afraid of her going that she might end up sleeping with this director, as pointed out by best friend Lee Sze Chit who was poking fire actually. Jess wanted to go as this was a golden opportunity and Joe refused to let her go. When she told the kids she will be going away he let the youngest to use emotional threat to make her stay but later the youngest one having heard the story about a butterfly which is meant to be flying free agreed her Aunty Jess should go but by then Joe and Lee confronted the director friend and through no direct action of Joe, the director suffered a broken neck. But this friend did not blame Joe and lied to Jess and said the company insisted on a foreign assistant so Jess could not go. Jess was very disappointed until she overheard Lee and Joe's conversation and so she wanted to go by packing her bags first. Joe stopped her and asked sarcastically "You choose your family or your career?", and that kinda tipped the whole scale and Jess left for the airport without her baggage. Of course it was a happy ending in the end as they missed each other and all. But the scene holds many problems.

For one, children won't talk like how the youngest talk like "Aunty, you're like a butterfly meant to fly freely". I am not insulting children's intelligence but I would think a more simpler line like "Aunty, you can go, I can take care of myself but I will miss you" would be more better.

Second, this series reminds me of a rather old Korean drama series which I am sure some of you may have heard of, it is called Model starring my most favourite actor right now, Jang Dong Gun which so happens to be one of the worst series I have ever seen. As in Model, there is an underlying chauvinism in this series that the writer may or may not realise. First that MCP kid, then now this. In Model, we always see the sister coming home to cook and clean and the brother always telling the sister to stop working and get a husband (many characters also had the same conversation with at least one member of their family) but the sister just lightly slapped the brother on the head like it was some joke but it wasn't. In this series Joe didn't want the wife to go because he reasoned if he can give up on his musical career to choose family surely she can to. Which was what makes me dislike this series more. You making the choice to give up doesn't mean she has to make the same choice. Moreover she has the ultimate opportunity of a lifetime. If she said assistant director in an African production, ok maybe she should give up but this is Hollywood; John Woo and countless others spent many years to break into Hollywood and now we have this idiotic selfish unsuccessful husband telling the wife not to go because he thought she might sleep with the director, the children will miss her and he needs her. I mean she is only going for 6 months; big deal, be a man and learn to deal with it. If she ever got the opportunity to settle there, be an understanding husband and move to US with her and the children. After all, he doesn't have a career so he can let her have one. And his career is like teaching music only. I am not trivialising one career over the other but it would make more sense for Joe to follow Jess rather than the other way around since his career can be more flexible. And the argument about the children will miss her terribly is uncalled for. Their father has died and will never come back and I could see them adjusting very well, so Jess being away for 6 months is again no big deal. The children can cope. About him missing her, that's even worse excuse. And as for him being afraid she will sleep with the director, like the director said their relationship has got to be so weak before he can make a move and thus far, their relationship has been solid. The husband clearly doesn't trust the wife so what kind of relationship is this? Another scene had the oldest boy telling his aspiring singer girlfriend to follow her dreams and that they should separate because he didn't want to stop her from pursuing her dreams. Maybe the Uncle should have learn about how to love someone from this young man.

There is a serious underlying chauvinism in Joe's character but of course this series doesn't explore that for the very fact that the writer didn't realise there was one. I find Joe's character such a bastard at that point.

Maybe the woman wanting to put career first over family here may be wrong even if it is only for 6 months. But for 4 years she dedicated her life to her family, why can't for once she choose herself over the others for just that 6 months? Joe can do the same too; nobody is stopping him from teaching music. I was thinking luckily only 6 months...if forever then how?

So again scripting problem, character problem, scenario problem ... this series has loads of problems.

Maybe the technical aspect can be good which is not.

The most illogical has to be the house they live in. Joe isn't rich since he's just a music teacher. Jess isn't rich as you and I know how much TVB pays their director, which is not enough to finance such a big house. The children's father may not be rich since he was a volunteer doctor at some mercy mission. Aunty of Jess is rich I assume since she is such a gold digger but I doubt Aunty helps niece financially. So they're left to defend for themselves and so how on Earth they can buy or even continue to live in such a big big house?

Then there was the oldest boy's girlfried doing some solo singing in some event meant for another famous group and the way she went about singing like it was her solo concert was one of the worst acting ever. You're supposed to be in some fan club event and not once did she look at the guys as in group standing behind her. I know she is supposed to be talented and all but must the scene make it so bloody obvious?

And finally the choir singing. Worst singing ever. Can't they just ask a real choir to sing? Luckily I did not have to watch Joe Ma himself sing in English.

So nothing is great the question now is the performances.

The children are all quite ok except for the oldest boy who has deadpan written on his face from episode 1 to the last, showing slight emotion when he found out the lies by Aunty ad Uncle and also when breaking off with his girlfriend. I never noticed much about this young man except that he is quite pleasant looking. And then someone had to point out to me that his nickname should be Pimple Face and then I began to notice his pimples more than anything else. Not very nice to do that. The other children are ok except for the 2nd girl who is not a very good actress since I didn't notice her much whilst the youngest girl is the best but she is no Jenny Shing, I am sorry to say. None of the boys were Gregory Lee too, again very sorry to say. But even if the children ranges from ok to good, the adults should just jump off the building for being far worse than these children.

For one Joe Ma. With or without glasses, he is still such a boring actor. I used to think highly of him, but that was before I realised this man can shine in secondary roles but once he is put in front as the lead, he is a horribly inadequate and uncharismatic actor. If you wanna know the definition of charisma and screen presence, watch Joe Ma act and you will know who is NOT charismatic and what is meant by LACK of screen presence. I don't know what's wrong with him. He's not THAT bad an actor, he is good looking, he is tall for a Chinese actor which is rare, he has the built of a model, he is tanned and healthy albeit much older looking than before, he has a good reputation and clean record from what I do know of and in person he seems nice, friendly and un-star like. I don't expect him to beat his wife or drive like a mad driver to become interesting but somehow when he is the lead and he is acting, even Moses Chan is more interesting than him. It boils down to the fact that I find him without much personality, not because he is a nice person in real life but because somehow when acting as a lead or maybe secondary actor with an important role to play, he just doesn't shine. I really do not know why. His acting like I said is NOT that bad, but it's not good either. He has ceased to improve since I last recall him as the secondary actor with potential but I realise now sometimes some people are just meant to be in the background and Joe Ma is one of them. He is horribly inadequate in this series, almost bad if you ask me and frankly I could fall asleep watching him. Half the time in all the characters he had played recently I am not bothered to know what happened to his character because he doesn't engage my attention. I find Wong Hei, a much more smaller man prone to pretentiousness and overacting more charismatic than Joe Ma, not even mentioning one tiny little fact; that when Wong Hei is good, he is very very good (in acting) and when he is bad on a very very bad day, he is still more watchable than Joe Ma. I hope Joe Ma gets a breakout role soon, but I can't think of one for him right now. Maybe those romantic kinda roles you see in K-Drama that doesn't require heavy duty acting.

Jessica Hester Hsuen is another big question mark for me. I don't know what's wrong with her. She's very pretty outside of camera, she exudes confidence and intelligence and she seems very determined and very interesting in real life. And yet when she is acting, she just doesn't bring out those qualities. She stopped improving or perhaps bother to improve since forever as she had been here forever. I see her blossoming from an ugly duckling to a very attractive woman. But as an actress she just doesn't bloom anymore. There may have been a time she was very very good but now after having years of experience, maybe she has grown stale. Her every single performance is the same every time. Like Kenix Kwok whose difference between series A and series B is how many times she points at her co-star and how big her eyes are when staring, Jess' only difference is whether she is talking loud or talking soft. Playing a professional educated understanding woman, she sometimes whispers. As someone with a bigger personality so to speak she basically tilts her head out some more, eyes bigger and speak louder and also point some more. She is very predictable and you can super impose her other performances into this series and basically it's still the same old Jess. I find her boring and I am beginning to be very irritated with her all too familiar performance. I am also beginning to realise she is really very inadequate as an actress and if she persists like this, only her biggest fans will appreciate her brand of "I am so not there" type of acting. It's time to find a replacement.

Jess and Joe's chemistry is non existent by the way. So one extremely boring actor paired with one extremely predictable boring actress, that is Jessica Hester Hsuen and you will get two extremely excruciatingly predictable boring performances.

Liu Kai Chi was disappointing because his role is meaningless, as meaningless as Rebecca Chan's gold digger role.

The only two who did slightly better were Mimi Lo and Lee Sze Chit.

Mimi Lo surprised me because she was a host and now she is actively acting. She is neither pretty nor fair as in Miss HK type and she is a very capable host but I never imagined her as an actress. It was a very good surprise to see her in the almost lead role in Blade Heart and she did ok in there. In this series it is a small role and she wasn't great in it but somehow I find her performance worth mentioning. Could be a better actress but I doubt she could lead a series.

Lee Sze Chit is a phemonenan for a secondary actor. He is a terrible host but as an actor he brings out the character's personality in each of his performances. He talks dead pan like and yet I find him talented and flexible. I long to see him in a more important and drama type of role because I believe he can give his character a very interesting interpretation and personality. I find him interesting and charismatic but like Mimi Lo, I don't think he can lead a series because he doesn't have that quality. Maybe he can be a lead in a movie if the role is right. I also find him to be a gifted comedien since I do find his dead pan looks funny. He reminds me of Ronald Cheng actually, but he is handsomer of course. A good performance, not his best but definitely good to watch. I wonder does he have like a fansite or something? I am sure there are countless others who feels the same way I do.

Everybody else is just forgettable in this series.

Verdict
Believe me, you have done nothing wrong to deserve this crappy stuff. You can do so much better and you must learn to love yourself enough not to subject yourself to this nonsense. You don't need unnecessary therapy in your life, you're a wonderful intelligent viewer capable of making the right choice. Don't hurt yourself like this, please don't. There must be a much better series out there meant for your viewing pleasure. Don't buy into this shallow, pretentious, preachy, bad acting and especially lousy script of a series. I have your best interest in my mind and it breaks my heart to ever know if you ever seriously consider renting this lousy series. If you have rented it before, no harm done. It's in the past now.

There I have said it. Lousy, nonsense, crappy. How much clearer should I be?

Ok ok, avoid this one at all cost, even if you're Jess and Joe's biggest fans because Jess and Joe's biggest fan deserves so much better than this crappy nonsensical lousy piece of pure (ok maybe not so pure since it has its moments) junkatainment.

Interesting Comparison
3 actresses came to my mind when I asked myself which 3 has acted like forever.

Kenix Kwok, Jess and Ada Choi. I have seen them from the very beginning.

Kenix Kwok, you know how I feel about her. But she did give one memorable performance in Take My Word For It because that role is for her to play. I saw an interview of her in Scoop and she was labelled as the Chameleon Like Actress. The only way I can describe her is "Thousand Roles, One Face". That's Kenix.

Jess same league as Kenix but worse off as no memorable roles recently and she is getting worse and worse as her acting has stopped developing altogether.

Ada Choi is interesting. When I was watching Model I thought she really looked like that lead actress, acting also almost the same. Ada Choi started out young, fresh, interesting but raw. Over the years she has ceased to become fresh, she is much older and sadly, less interesting not due to her age but due to her acting. Am watching her in To Catch The Uncatcheable and I was thinking why is she doing such a bad impersonation of Dodo Cheng's Miss Mo? She tries too hard sometimes and her best acting is still by not trying too hard.

Of all 3, Ada Choi is still interesting and slightly less boring but by no means a better actress. But I won't go running for her series.

Interesting Comparison 2
I asked myself, which is the crappiest series in terms of storyline and acting I have seen in recent years coming from TVB and other sources? I am not talking about those I am watching right now but those I have seen. If I were to say those I have not seen properly but glimpses of it, that new Taiwanese/Chinese version of Mokey King starring Dicky Cheung is by far the crappiest of the crappiest. No, let's talk about those I have actually watched from A to Z.

Can't remember much but those that I can remember in no particular order...

Point Of No Return
- crappy because the acting by one particular actress was excruciatingly bad and the story has one of the most crappiest ending ever, or maybe almost ending is what I meant.

Perish In The Name Of Love
- I almost needed therapy after doing episodic reviews for this series and I think I have adequately explained why I really hate this series.

Angels of Mission
- the only difference in this series with all others is how bad is the acting by the 3 leads; from bad to really bad to oh please shut her up bad by scene per scene actress, the autmaton and the robot, respectively. If you've been reading my reviews for a long time, you know who is who. It is also the one series which I thought Sonija Kwok was bad but not as bad as the really bad Shirley Yeung who can do everybody a favour by just hosting and never act until she learns how to act in the first place. Storyline also crappy.

Life Begins At Forty
- or something like that. Crappy boring story, crappy ending, crappy acting.

It is never my intention to name all 4 Charmaine's series I have seen thus far as crappy but I can't bring myself not to. Some more, no Charmaine though ...

Before The Legend Begins
- an example of bad casting decision which resulted in bad performances not helped much by a inadequate script.

Eternal Happiness
- I truly hate this series and you can read my review to know why.

Model
- I can't bring myself to love this series eventhough I am crazy about Jang Dong Gun who is so handsome in this series which is really crappy because it is just such nonsence, too long and like its title, shallow is how the public viewed the profession anyway.

My conclusion the crappiest? Perish In The Name Of Love will win hands down if I hadn't suddenly remember Eternal Happiness, the mother of all crappy series in recent memory. Am so glad that series is in the past but remembering it is still a painful experience for me. Perish In The Name Of Love comes in at a close 2nd and Angels of Mission, the ultra boring series I never bothered to review (but might since I dislike it so much I might actually write one hell of a review) comes in at 3rd. Model deserves a special mention.
