Plot

A very and romantic adorable story about the roller coaster ride of a couple, Nick and Maggie (Jason and Yama).

Story

The series starts out with Maggie running in the streets of LA in a wedding dress to a taro card reader, Kingdom. She asks about her life and Kingdom tells her a bunch of things but all I remember is that the person that Maggie was running away from will always be in her life and causing havoc for her.

Some years after, Maggie is in HK working for a cruising ship company with Angela Tong and Rebecca Chan. She is selected to go on a cruise supposedly for vacation but really it’s the boss’ way of evaluating her performance. Coincidentally, Nick is the cruise director of that boat. The two meet and of course disaster strikes for the two have been married before but have also been through a bitter divorce.

Turns out, back who knows when, Maggie and her then fiancé were supposed to have a cruise wedding, however, the jerk left Maggie for another woman. Maggie being all alone and sad bumped into Nick and the two become friends. Nick is also in a bit of a situation for his dad and the company has lost all their money and now basically Nick is left penniless. The two out of impulse get married and have their wedding on the boat. Back in LA (since Maggie’s parents live there), another wedding was held in their honor but the fiancé had to come back and tell Maggie that he still loved her. He told Maggie that she’s just using Nick as a rebound. Maggie agreed, saying that at first that’s what she thought, but really now, she realized that the person she loves is Nick. Nick, our brilliant man, only heard the first part and left the wedding devastated. He then went to the hotel and paid some chic off to pretend that he’s having an affair with her, sending Maggie hysterically in the streets of LA.

So that was the past, now in the present, the two have to work together for the same company and needless to say, they don’t get along. In addition, Maggie got this idea to have Nick pay money support because they are divorced. Nick, not able to take it anymore, hatches this brilliant plan to get Maggie married off so he doesn’t have to pay anymore. In comes Stephen, Nick’s childhood friend and now Maggie’s potential suitor. So as that is going on, we also see that Joyce has been in love with Nick forever, however, knowing Nick isn’t able to handle another relationship, she keeps her feelings to herself. Actually, she pretends to be gay and hit on girls.

Anyways, the story unravels and we both see that although, Nick sees Maggie as just a person using men to get over her other fiancé, and Maggie sees Nick as a player, the two still have feelings for each other. But of course, there are lots of obstacles, like the money hungry Stephen who’ll do anything for Maggie to marry him, and the love struck Joyce who’ll do anything for Nick and his love…

What I love about this series

Nick Cheung- Oh how I missed him! I saw him in movies but somehow he wasn’t adorable in them like he was in here. And they were mostly gambling movies made by Wong Jing who I can’t really stand, so it was refreshing to see him star in a romantic comedy series. His character was too adorable and I remembered rooting for him all the way. Yeah…he should’ve talked to Maggie first in the beginning where he thought he was just a rebound for her, but I think she should’ve also talked to him too and demanded an explanation. Sometimes, it’s just the lack of communication that causes problems.

Nick and Maggie’s chemistry- they should really do more series together often. They made such a cute couple that I so love them. Every scene with them is definitely a memorable scene, especially the parts in the beginning when they just first met, then when both went to LA again to do some filming and data collecting for work. Everything they did for each other showed how much they cared. By the middle of the series, you just wanted them to go elope or something because they’re made for each other, have feelings for each other but things just got in their way.

The boats- Man, I want to go on a cruise!! Actually, last summer I did and I do want to go back but this series made me want to go even more! The scenery was amazing, the boat life was also very glamorous and just different from HK sets and so forth. But one thing, there was no people. I remembered fighting for the pool every time I tried to squeeze in there, not like Nick/Maggie have that great place to themselves. And no one was sunbathing or anything on the deck, just the characters, not very realistic.

Scenes taking place other than in HK- Just refreshing. New scenery, and people with blond hair, just very different, like in LA.

The music- All the American songs were so cute and perfect for each scene. (I downloaded all of them!)

What I didn’t like

Stephen Au’s character- Wow! What an annoying creep! He made me want to punch him, but that was towards the end when he’ll do anything for money. In the beginning actually he was alright, kind of sweet and cute, but towards the middle, he was a jerk and deserved what came to him. Stephen did a great job in here for making me hate him so much. Actually, I thought he was going to end up with Joyce for some reason. Hey, now I mentioned it, I also liked Stephen and Joyce’s characters in Witness to a Prosecution II. Very cute couple in there but kind of too rushed ending.

The last couple of episodes- Maggie just got on my nerves. The woman is so stupid towards the end that I seriously wanted to ring her neck. There was also Stephen who I really wanted to whack him somewhere. Plus, I don’t think she made an effort with Nick. Nick did so much for her but sometimes, the basic thing to do is trying she wouldn’t even do. Poor Nick.

Odds and Ends

Joyce Tang- She was very pretty in here and very skinny too, also, she smiled so much with the dimples and everything. Very, very happy in here, well sometimes. Anyways, I would have probably enjoyed it better if she ended up with someone. Just a very pitiful character at times. Sometimes, I couldn’t’ stand her, like in the beginning where it’s so evident that she likes Nick but for some reason most of the characters didn’t know. And sometimes, I thought she was just so righteous like when she tried to get Nick and Maggie to reconcile because she knows they were the ones who belonged together. I seriously felt bad for her actually; loving someone who she knows will never return her love. Just sad. I was seriously waiting for Marco to come and rescue her towards the end! Hehehehehe! Well, she wasn’t sad in the end so that’s all that counts.

Winnie Yeung- Seriously, they should’ve just had a less famous person play her character because she showed up for like 30 minutes total. Very unimportant character as Stephen’s girlfriend who ended up pregnant with his baby but again, she wasn’t in that many scenes.

Angela Tong and Cheung Chi Kwong- The funny couple in here that first hated each others guts but ended up with each other. Angela is Maggie’s best friend and Cheung Chi Kwong is Nick’s kind of hobo writer friend. Actually, he’s one of those trashy romance writers. Angela loves his books but of course doesn’t know who the writer is until when she does and the two go out. Cute happy story. Angela to me can be so cute and sometimes, so annoying, depends what role she’s playing. In here she was just funny, sit back and enjoy her bickering sessions with Cheung Chi Kwong. I love Angela’s little curly lock that sticks out the side of her head...it’s so funny, especially when you see her put a curl roll in it at night.

Favorite Male character

Of course that would be Nick’s Jason! He looks really good in this series too. Like I said before, Nick isn’t a handsome guy but for some reason I think he’s attractive. I love him in suits and of course those cute casual outfits that make him so…cute. Part of me thinks he’s so obsessive with trying to expose Stephen in the end because Maggie was so stupid in the end that she didn’t deserve him, and part of me thinks that it’s so sweet of him because he’ll do anything for the woman he loves. I don’t know if I think it’s wrong for Nick to set up Stephen with Maggie in the first place because Maggie kind of brought it upon herself for flaunting her/his money in front of him, being as cheap as I am I wouldn’t want my money to be spent like that. A very sweet, funny, caring guy, I wouldn’t mind dating him!

Favorite Female character

Actually, I liked Maggie in the beginning but then if you’ve read all the way this far then you’ll know she lost lots of points towards the end. She listened to everything Stephen said when she wouldn’t listen to Nick or even her own sister, Joyce. Oh yeah, if you haven’t seen this then that might be a bombshell. Joyce and Maggie are half sisters. (Maggie’s daddy had an affair and voila Joyce was born. Just plain dumb that really annoying to me. Again, I didn’t think she did anything to try on her relationship with Nick. A little problem and she’ll flee. *sigh* Poor Nick. However, I still think that they made the cutest couple.

Funniest Character

Usually, I would say that Nick is the funniest because in the TV business I think he’s sort of the king of comedy, but his character was more sweet, and caring more than a comic character. So the funniest people would be Angela and Cheung Chi Kwong when they’re together. As a couple, I wasn’t that interested in them, but when they bicker it’s funny to watch.

Should you watch it?

Absolutely! It’s a light romantic comedy that will sure to make you laugh, feel with the characters and sometimes want to ring some necks because it’ll make you that mad. It’s been a long time since TVB successfully got me hook on any series, and this did the trick. The actors all did a great job, storyline very refreshing and touching, and heck it’s Nick’s first series since he’s back at TVB! I’m a Maggie fan, but I definitely watched this series for Nick, actually for both, but Nick was my favorite character.

Kenix Kwok

Joe Ma

Benny Chan

Tavia Yeung

Eileen Yeow

Evergreen Mak

Belinda Hamnett

Kwok Fung

Law Koo Lan

Mark Kwok

Ben Ng

Derek Kwok

Plot

A police drama starring my guy Bowie Lam and my other tall handsome guy Joe Ma! It's a typical TVB cops drama with cases, relationships, bad guys you want to kill, etc.

Story

Bowie and Kenix are from the same village and they've known each other since forever. They're great friends and see each other as brother and sister. Kenix is a doctor and Bowie is the respected policeman. The talented doctor right now is seeing Mark but she's always too busy with her work to pay any real attention to him. Bowie is also seeing Eileen who he treats like a maid but for some reason Eileen's still with him.

One day, Joe Ma moves into the village and starts off on the wrong foot with Kenix and Bowie. Actually, Joe was from the SWAT team and transferred to Bowie's sector and becoming his boss, so Bowie resents him a little for kind of taking his job.

Benny is Bowie's little sidekick and he looks up to Bowie like he's god. I think they both grew up in the same village.

As the Plot Thickens

Mark one day because of an accident dies on Kenix's watch at the hospital. He makes Kenix promise him to take care of his mistress and their baby. (I think that's what happened because seriously, my tape was all messed up at that part). So Tavia shows up causing havoc for Kenix. She threatens Kenix that she'll have an abortion if Kenix doesn't provide the necessities for her, aka money. Tavia is actually squandering money for her bad brother, Derek Kwok, who's obviously in a lot of debt.

Anyways, Kenix promises and Tavia agrees to live with Kenix so that she can look out for both mother and child. Meanwhile, Benny is developing feelings for Eileen because every time when Bowie isn't free he sends his little sidekick to go with his girlfriend. The two develop feelings and begin to go out behind Bowie's back. Bowie finds out, gets furious but then realized that he wasn't that great of a boyfriend and gives them his blessings to go out. Eileen and Benny decides to get married but at this time Benny is a little tight with money, blah blah, anyways, Benny ends up in real debt.

Bowie now starts to like Kenix but Kenix is also starting to realize that Joe isn't such a bad guy after all and they both have feelings for each other. (Actually, Joe in the very beginning saved Kenix from a sociopath, but unfortunately, she didn't see his face. So when Kenix realized that Joe was her savior, of course that also helped put things into perspective and made her like Joe even more!) Bowie once again, is unlucky with love and is left alone. So this leaves the pregnant Tavia and Bowie. I guess the two hang around each other a lot and developed feelings for each other as well.

Ok...enough with that plot.

My Comments

This actually was a very entertaining series. There were plot twists and unpredictable outcomes. It's also very unusual for the main girl, Kenix and main guy, Bowie not to end up together and to me very refreshing. The pairing in here was a little unpredictable, especially Eileen and Benny. I like both actors but to me Eileen looks a bit mature for Benny but hey, it's also refreshing to see change.

Joe and Kenix

Ah! The handsome and very tall Joe Ma. We get to see so much of him, which I'm not complaining. I think he's a great actor and I'm so happy TVB is giving so many opportunities. His pairing with Kenix is actually very enjoyable and the two prove to be a cute pair. Kenix in my opinion is too skinny. I think she should fatten up more because sometimes I think she's going to keel over. But hey, that's my opinion. Kenix is a good actress to me but her roles now are too similar making it a little boring to watch. Her character in here was nothing too eye catching and it was interesting just to watch her with either Bowie or Joe.

Bowie and Tavia

Tavia in my opinion has done it the old fashion way, going to school, which is something I respect. Not saying that the Miss HKs aren't any good because I do respect them too, well some of them, I'm just saying Tavia didn't get the boost that they did or the pre-exposure. She definitely has some talent and it shows in here. She's very natural in all her scenes from the annoying money hustler in the beginning to the responsible caring mother she turned in the end. Bowie and her made my favorite couple. Bowie looks so cute when he smiles, it's like his eyes shrunk or something, just too cute. He also transformed himself too, from being negligent to the caring boyfriend who'll do anything for his family.

Benny and Eileen

At first, I thought I wasn't going to like them one bit. But I really wasn't watching it for them so they didn't bother me. I still think Eileen looks too mature for Benny but chemistry wise, they were great. I was very touched especially towards the end with how Benny cared so much for his wife. Very odd pair but in the end it was a pleasant surprise.

Favorite Female

Tavia. Very spunky, funny, cute, you name it. Just very enjoyable to watch. Her character at first, annoyed me like anything, but then you see where she's from and why she's doing all those things. She then realized that she doesn't have to lie for money anymore and her true colors showed. She befriended Kenix and Bowie which was fun to watch.

Odd and Ends

I thought it was too cute with the four couples all getting married in their traditional outfits. Evergreen's ending was what he deserves but I do feel sorry for him. Such an underrated actor with so much talent. Although, he doesn't have the looks but if you give him a rich character that you can just fall in love with, he's all set.

Ben Ng's in here. I never liked him to be honest. I thought his acting was too forced especially in that other cop movie with Benny and Maggie Siu. He was Joe's good friend turn bad in here and I did not enjoy him at all.

Mark Kwok showed up for like 10 minutes in all. I think it's because of all the bad guys he's played that I'm not very fond of him but I do recognize him as an actor and I think he should get meaty role parts. Granted, he's not that handsome but sometimes, he reminds me of Frankie Lam, who reminds me of Chilam Cheung. Call me crazy.

Jules' insight

A very enjoyable series but I remembered pressing the "ff" button a lot. Good storyline, good cast, and enjoyable couples. It's not on one of my must watch list, but it's entertaining nonetheless. The cases aren't anything to rave about but again it's enjoyable.

Perish In The Name Of Love [TVB]

Steven Ma- Chow Sai Hin

Moses Chan-Ming Dynasty's last Emperor

Maggie Siu- Empress/Chow Yuk Fung

Michael Tong- Cho Sing Hing

Sonija Kwok- Chiu Yan

Jay Lau- Tin Fei

Marco Ngai- Ng Sam Kwai

Anne Heung- Chan Yuen Yuen

Ellesmere Choi

Annie Man- Lee Yuk Han

Story

A mega TVB grand production which yielded disappointment in ratings wise, for I think TVB had to shorten the length of the HK version. Anyways, basically, we get to see the Ming Dynasty coming to its end and the struggle of its last Emperor trying to save it. Tragic, emotional, you name it.

Plot

So long, so here are the highlights.

Cheung Ping (little Charmaine) and Sai Hin (little Steven) have known each other since they were kids. The two are inseparable and to me a little scary and weird for the two express emotions to each other like they're 20/30. Anyways, the two split up because at this time the Empress (Maggie Siu) is being wrongfully accused of killing Tin Fei's baby (Jay Lau). She is banished from the palace to live with the commoners. Well, she and her two daughters Cheung Ping and Chiu Yan (little Sonija).

Years pass and everyone is grown up, country is still in turmoil, blah blah blah, Maggie and her girls are living as ordinary people with different names. They would go from job to job just to have ends meet.

Because of fate, Cheung Ping and Sai Hin reunite at a cannon factory owned by Sing Hing's (Michael Tong) dad. What's Sai Hin doing there? He's the cannon designer employed by Sing Hing's dad. As for Cheung Ping now using another name, Fai lei so Sai Hin couldn't recognize her as indeed his childhood love, is also there because she needs to work for money. Anyways, Sai Hin figures out that Fai Lei is indeed Cheung Ping, but there are just some obstacles. Sing Hing also likes Cheung Ping and at this time our Sai Hin is engaged t Yuk Han (Annie Man). So the poor love birds have feelings for each other but can only bury them.

Making the long story short, the Empress returns to the palace with her girls but because of corruption and Tin Fei they were horribly treated by everyone even by the Emperor himself. However, because of both the Empress and Cheung Ping's sweet darling nature they won over the trust and love of the Emperor again.

So, I'm going to skip a bunch and get to the part of Sai Hin actually becoming the Princess Consort and is ordered to fight off the will be Chings. However, with all his efforts, the Emperor couldn't save his kingdom from falling and in the end, the Ming Dynasty was gone.

How do Marco Ngai and Anne Heung fit into this??

He's Ng Sam Kwai, the Chinese Arnold Benedict who showed up at like ep. 20. He and Chan Yuen Yuen (Anne Heung) are madly in love with each other. Sam Kwai promised her that he'll come back for her but for 3 years, he was a no show. A desperate Yuen Yuen, who'll do anything to see her lost love again, stupidly listened to Tin Fei to become a concubine in hopes to see Sam Kwai again. Anyways, little did she know that she was only a pawn in Tin Fei's very twisted and what I don't understand plot.

So what was Tin Fei's plan?

You see? In the beginning, I thought it was just trying to find a pretty chic, that would be Anne, get her to make the Emperor fall in love with her, so she will ultimately have control over him. Yeah, pretty twisted but that's the evil Tin Fei for you. What I don't understand, was how did she factor Sam Kwai and Yuen Yuen. It's so happens that when she learnt of their relationship, she immediately spawn the plan that would ruin them both. What did she have against him anyway, he didn't even show up until 20 episodes later. So back to the plan, of course when Yuen Yuen met up with Sam Kwai at first she was so mad at him but they made up because truthfully she still loves him. So th begin this sordid affair and when the Emperor found out he was furious. But without Sam Kwai he knows that he'll lose his country for sure, so he made a deal of Sam Kwai that after the battle is fought and won he'll let him have Yuen Yuen. However, again, nothing is that easy, Tin Fei and her conspirators made sure that didn't happen and ultimately it's the whole country against Sam Kwai for trying to steal the emperor's wife. Sam Kwai felt that there's nothing for him anymore and left the palace. Mind you, he didn't open the gates to the Chings yet. You'll just have to watch it to find out.

So did the Emperor really fall for Yuen Yuen?

I would say no. His heart was always with the Empress Yuk Fung and I'm glad. So why did he chose her? Well, we have Tin Fei to thank for that again. She pulled a trick on everyone by making Yuen Yuen wear this huge flower that'll attract the butterfly which will dictate who'll be the Emperor's next wife. Guess what? Yuen Yuen won. So at that night, she's presented to the Emperor. At this time, he was so occupied with more important business, fighting off enemies that he didn't even care who the butterfly chose. So we went to see her and I think there was the initial, "WOW! She's hot!" kind of thing but it wasn't love for sure. I don't think he wants to see her unless it was to ask her something about the condition of her hometown. Ok, enough on that.

Yeah…I know I missed a lot of stuff but it's a lot of stuff and I'm tired. If you want to know the FULL storyline, please visit www.perish.freehomepage.com for a detailed summary.

Performances

Moses Chan

I used to think this guy not only looks like a, um, don't get mad Moses fans, but a rat and can only do one thing, make me hate him because of his characters. After Family Man, I changed my view of him because he did the unthinkable. He was funny, charming and most importantly proved to me that Moses is actually a talented actor who can portray an array of character traits. He was able to make me sympathize with this sometimes crazy and sometimes admirable king. I mean, sure, when he gets all manic and rips his emperor robes off and starts yelling at everyone around him, I'm just going, man…no wonder no one wants to work for you!" But then I understand that he's frustrated. Everyone around him is just looking out for their own interest, no cares for the country and for some odd reason, no one understands the country is in deep deep trouble. He feels that it's only him against the world and he somehow has to win. I admire this king for not giving up and even though at the end he was about to, he didn't, very noble. You then felt sorry for him when he's all sick because he's all worn out from facing this battle himself but at the same time you rooted for him and wished he succeeded. Anyway, Moses was able to convey all that convincingly and I truly enjoyed his character and again I felt for him and sympathized with him.

Looks wise you might say that Moses isn't a handsome guy, and I have to agree with you. In fact, unlike Nick who isn't a handsome guy, I don't even find Moses attractive. But he has this screen presence in here with his costumes and especially that beard that made him portray the emperor so well. Without the beard though, he missed something, like in the beginning, too scrawny somehow. Too bare, I guess.

Maggie Siu

Her character was this "too-good-to-be-true" kind of person. She's sweet, gentle, polite, etc, and finally a little wimpy to me. I mean, if I were Empress with all that power, I wouldn't let anyone slapping me around, like that other concubine who thinks she's all that, (not Jay Lau). She's another concubine who hates Maggie because supposedly it's because of Maggie that's why Moses doesn't pay attention to her. I mean, she has the guts to humiliate Maggie in front of so many people and what's more Maggie didn't do anything about it. Even though she's supposedly powerful but hey, you can't treat someone like that especially if she's higher in rank than you. Maggie's empress was I think not too scared to stand up to her enemies but she feels like she shouldn't cause any trouble for her beloved husband the emperor, which I guess is admirable. But still, she's too nice and wimpy. Even when she regained her title back saying that she'll use her power to govern the palace people, it was a short lived experience. Yeah, she beat the crap out of Tin Fei but that was once. The dumbest thing was she let Tin Fei to continue to stay in the palace. Banned her from the palace and be a commoner! Why let her stay? It's like she's inviting the trouble. Anyways, again, just too nice and again, too wimpy.

As a mother she was loving, caring, etc. But in some cases I do think she's a little biased with her girls for favoring Cheung Ping more, which I'll elaborate further later. Maggie Siu is so pretty still, she aged beautifully I have to say. You can definitely tell she's not as young as she used to be but hey she looks great and her acting is top notch. Her empress can be a little more assertive in the beginning but she made up for that in the end. Although, I think sometimes her character is a little useless because literally she's just standing there next to the Moses or making him drink his medicine or anything, but even he said so, without her support he wouldn't have the strength to go on.

As a couple with Moses, even though there weren't too many scenes where they showed their affection, you can tell the two care and love each other very much. Maggie will do anything for him and vice versa.

Steven Ma

At first, I thought Steven couldn't pull this role off. I never thought of him as Sai Hin material because not only is Sai Hin great with wit, and smarts, he's also gentle, awesome in fighting, and most of all PERFECT for Cheung Ping. In some way shape or form Steven has portrayed some of these characteristics but failed to convince me that he's any good at portraying any of them . I think he's adequate in his roles but he's never truly prove to me that he's definitely good top notch TVB big brother hot shot. But for some reason, I do like him as an actor. He's so tanned but I don't think he's that good looking though. In here, again, he failed at times to make an impression on me that is memorable. His Sai Hin was likable and I felt for him and saw his love for both Cheung Ping and his country. His character was also another admirable character always doing the right thing and very bold. When he went up to the Emperor and bluntly said that it was because of him that's why they've been losing all their battles. He hit it right there and I was so proud! But like I said, Steven did only an adequate job in portraying Sai Hin for he still lacked something. Well, maybe more than adequate. I would say above adequate and leaning towards good. He was just sometimes unnatural and forced in saying his lines especially when he's trying to express something to someone. A little more practice and he'll be great, that's what I say about every actor nowadays! Or maybe he's just bored of playing these characters.

With Charmaine as a couple, I used to think that they will prove to be cute as I was watching this series. But as it progressed, I realized I wasn't watching it for them. I mean, we have a kingdom falling, boo-hoo for these love birds, right? So as I kept on watching, they gradually made me lost my interest in them but I was rooting for them to get together. I guess it was "heartbreaking" no wait, more like, "not again but they'll see each other" kind of thing every time they're separated. I'm not a cold hearted person, it was just after twice of this, it was getting tiring. Another thing I have to complain about, what's up with the beginning? I seriously didn't like it at all. First, it kind of ruined it for me even though I kind of knew the couple's fate, but putting us through their childhood memories and letting them revisit their childhood place, blah blah blah, a little too over the top. We get it, their in love. Then they had to put us through that ALL over again at the end. Man, I fast forwarded it because I didn't want to sit through it again.

Anyways, in the beginning when Sai Hin realized Cheung Ping who he's been searching for, was right in front of his face was the only scene that I thought was cute between the two of them. And then from there, it was I mean, Steven and Charmaine have chemistry but it was too over the top, again. We get their in love, make it more interesting!

Charmaine Sheh

I'll confess here that I used to think Charmaine was such a bad actress that no matter how much practice she got she'll still be bad, or was that Le San San? After that, I boycotted all of Charmaine's series until I watched Country Spirit and Herbalist Affair and my views changed drastically. I admired her character so much in there and she proved that finally with practice she's gotten it and began to like Charmaine as an actress.

Her Cheung Ping was just like her mother, sweet, nice, gentle always thinking about the other person. Very noble in that she was willing give up Sai Hin to Yuk Han (Annie). She also did everything she could to help Annie after how she treated her so badly. I wouldn't call her a wimp because she does have some spunk in her. But I will call her a little boring to watch for sometimes when a problem appears her solution is just to cry. But I think it's through the story that we see Cheung Ping grows and matures and she cries less and less, a good thing. Like when she yells at Michael for being such a bum or when she beat up Sonija for almost killing her. As for performance wise Charmaine did do above average. She portrayed the gentle, lovely princess as just that. Although, her performance wasn't as memorable as in Country Spirit or Herbalist Affair, it definitely was a good one. I think she still has room for improvement though because at times when she's delivering her lines, she seems to be whining it not expressing the right emotion for it. But otherwise a good performance. She was very pretty in here and her costumes were very pretty. Just her hair at first annoyed me, the bangs sometimes just looks funny, but then I got used to it.

Chemistry wise with Steven, it's not that they didn't have chemistry, I mean, the whole story is about their love affair so how bad can it be, but Charmaine doesn't look the best with him, I guess that's a good way to put it. I think the best match for Charmaine has to be Roger Kwok because like what Funn said they sizzled in there. As Cheung Ping and Sai Hin I guess the pair isn't suppose to convey anything hot and heavy just pure um…cuteness (again with the word) and compatible, so they did just that but it didn't hold much of my interest.

Michael Tong

I think I've stated the obvious when I say he is our "very very nice guy who'll fall for the main girl who's destined for the main guy." Again, that's what he exactly played. Sing Hin at first was a womanizer bum who doesn't know anything except for spending his dad's money and do nothing. After meeting Cheung Ping he fell madly in love with her but soon realized that he stands no chance against Sai Hin. So our poor guy is forced to stand by the sidelines but he'll do anything for her.

Michael Tong is a handsome man. Although, I see lots of lines of wisdoms in his eyes, he's still good looking. Again though, I'm getting so bored of this persona that just makes me feel so sorry for him because he just can't get the girl. I actually think though that he has more chemistry with Charmaine than Steven does and I just wish that they'll end up together in one series because it's the second series he's chasing after her. As for performance, Michael has done this so many times that it's like breathing to him so of course it was convincing and good.

Sonija Kwok

Contrary to what majority thinks about her, I didn't think she was that bad when she first began acting. Surely, she definitely wouldn't have won an Oscar or anything with those performances but I didn't think it was that terrible. She was new so I gave her a break in a way. Plus, I thought she was so pretty and still is. I missed her other performances like Lok Sun because I was just not interested, but enjoyed her in The Family Man because she did show improvement. Nothing drastic or breathtaking but still bearable.

Her Chiu Yan seriously had me wishing lightning to strike her standing. This was just a pure evil child who thinks of no one but herself and how to benefit herself. She'll do anything to get what she wants and who cares about who gets hurt in the way even if that person is her own mother. Sonija I had to say was convincing in all her scenes except for maybe her crying scenes or her pouting scenes. She did show effort and while she's far from being a great actress, with a little more practice I think she'll be good. She truly was so evil in here that she lost her beauty and I just couldn't stand the sight of her, so she did her job. Make me hate her so. I guess making us audiences to hate your character doesn't warrant you the best actress award, but if you do that by your acting abilities and not by being annoying or rather your lack of those abilities then I think that's good acting.

Sometimes she's in her scenes she was just so fake when she wanted people to feel sorry for her but I think she was intentionally trying to do that. She showed us that all Chiu Yan had to do was say those things act that way even though to us not convincing, but for some reason she'll get what she'll want because people are just gullible. Another thing, it was weird seeing her call Moses daddy. Weren't they like a couple in other series and are playing another one in an upcoming one? Just too weird.

Jay Lau

I never liked her as an actress back then and I don't think she's that pretty. She was just pure evil in here too. What I don't understand about her is why she did all the things she did just to be the Empress when she knows that the consequent of her actions will ultimately lead to the fall of the dynasty and guess what?? Who or what will she be the empress of? Very stupid on her part. Jay ever since she was back with TVB has been a total of 3 series including this one. She didn't fair too well in Family Man for I thought some of her scenes were too forced and some she didn't try at all. But in here, she made me hate her Tin Fei so much. She was natural and seriously tried her best.

Annie Man

After she died, I forgot she was in the series. Yup, that's how memorable her performance was. It wasn't her fault actually, because the script never mentioned her either later, and plus she was just a guest star. Her character was spoiled, blah blah blah, rich girl type who was in love with Sai Hin. She at first hated Cheung Ping because she found out that Sai Hin is in love with her, but later made amends with her because Cheung Ping nobly gave up Sai Hin to her. Anyways, Annie was her usual self, cute, nothing too interesting.

Marco Ngai

He didn't show up that much in here so I couldn't really comment except Marco did his best. He's a very versatile actor and you can see that with his character Ng Sam Kwai. Sam Kwai started out to be honorable and very loyal to the king. But just because of Yuen Yuen he disregarded all his principles and refused to help his country and the king. I guess I can understand though because he's being pressured by all of Tin Fei's people to the point that the king couldn't over look that he's having an affair with Yuen Yuen. I guess I'm just undecided about this character. I cheered for him when he said to everyone's face that they don't know how to protect their country or even fight a battle. He was the only one out there risking his lives for everyone and all these people can do is cause havoc and ruin the kingdom. After all that, he gets slapped by the emperor and gets tossed out of the palace. I understand he's lost hope with everything, but he also knows that if he helps the emperor than they'll win for sure. Instead, he sat by the sidelines and did nothing. Well, Marco didn't show up that much so I really think he got cheated of a better role. Did Marco gained some weight to you?

Anne Heung

I'm beginning to tolerate her more and more now. At first, I just couldn't' stand this actress, but now she's growing on me. She's pretty in here but I don't think enough to be the drop dead gorgeous Chan Yuen Yuen who've made like a million guys fall for her. She wasn't bad, in fact I don't think she can be bad anymore, just not that good. She still isn't that natural in her scenes I think but she showed up for like 10 episodes total so it was hard to really rate her. Guess what though? I actually liked Marco and Anne's chemistry! I know…weird. But I thought their love story was a lot more tragic than our main characters' even though it was more of a sordid affair. In fact, I thought Anne did very well when Marco, Sam Kwai, came to see her and tried to explain why he didn't come for her. She just cried and cried and hugged him, very touching and very convincing.

Ellesmere Choi

Seriously, another insignificant character who's the brother of Cheung Ping. I think the real story he was like a kid though. Anyways, I enjoy watching Ellesmere, but he showed up for no more than 30 minutes total though.

The Ending

SPOILERS ALERT! SPOILERS ALERT!

So the ending…very unexpected. Some people are a little unhappy with it because it ruins the true meaning of a tragedy and what the story of Princess Cheung Ping really was about. Actually lets talk about the theme here. First, I rooted for the Ming Dynasty all the way, even though we all know that everyone was more well off with the Chings. So when someone would try a new tactic to save their country I just wished it would work but of course unfortunately we all know that it would be a waste. It's a little discouraging I guess. No matter how hard you try, fate will have the ultimate say in things. But then I guess the Emperor didn't stand a chance because of all the idiots he's surrounded himself with.

So the real ending- Cheung Ping and Sai Hin didn't die. They faked their own death and lived as commoners to have a peaceful life. And guess who's with them? Yup! Sing Hing but crippled. Anyways, I think it's just another version that's out there, since it's a myth and they're so many other twists on it. I mean, everyone thought Cheung Ping lost an arm, this is just another version of the story like in Duke of Mount Deer. So this just shows that TVB leans towards happy and harmonious endings trying to convey, hard work does pay off, blah blah blah you know, the usual stuff.

The Kids

Little Steven was played by Shing Jin Kuen and little Charmaine was by Maggie Wong. Man, I couldn't stand the two of them. They weren't even cute, I know I'm mean but little Cheung Ping to me should be not only cute but have some hint that when she grows up she'll be gorgeous. Maggie's face was just too plain, not even cute. Her acting was so-so because she is still a kid and I don't think it's right to be too harsh on them. So how about the little Sai Hin? He was more annoying in every way. The kid smiled way too much. I guess part of the reason why I didn't like seeing the kids is because of their "intense" liking for each other. I have nothing against childhood romances and everything because I do think it's sweet. But I don't like the children talking to each other and to everyone else like they're a couple already with intense love for that's the case here. Maybe they're just very mature kids, whatever, ooh…I know! Corny is the word I'm looking for. Yeah…some of the stuff that comes out of these kids' mouths is like, only 90 year olds say that! Ok, well it's not the kids fault but the scriptwriters for making them just too corny.

So cutest couple?

Not that many for there's such emphasize on the mega couple, Steven and Charmaine but their story didn't strike me as that heart wrenching or tragic. So the couple I liked watching was Moses and Maggie. Granted their scenes were few but when they're together it was a joy to watch and very memorable. Every detail that Maggie tended to her beloved husband and definitely vice versa for that was truly rare but it showed how much each other cared for one another. Maybe it's because Moses is an Emperor who has like a million wives so showing his devotion to one is rare for a king, that's why I thought it was sweet.

Another couple who initially I thought was uninteresting but grew to like were Anne and Marco. Oh, to cure your curiosity they did end up together even though, a lot did come between them.

Comparing this to Princess Cheung Ping with Damian and Michelle Mai Suet

Yeah dude, there was another version made like a million years ago by these two. Damian Lau plays Sai Hin and Michelle is Cheung Ping. In there it was all different, Chiu Yan wasn't bad, Cheung Ping and Daimian weren't madly in love with each other and I think the only reason why they got married was because of some political issue, and finally a Michael Tong character was involved in the form of oh…forgot the actor's name but he was in War and Remembrance with Louis Koo and Yvonne Yeung.

Anyways, this version was much more tragic but call me shallow it was tooooo old for me to really watch and enjoy it. Another thing, I don't like Damian. He's an all right actor but I don't think he has screen presence you might say, or anything remotely close to being attractive. All his characters that I've seen don't stand out at all and they're all boring. Comparing him to Steven, even though Steven doesn't have that much experience and talent that Damian has, I enjoyed Steven's version of Sai Hin better. Oh something I forgot to mention, lose the hat Steven, it makes him look too weak and just plain older than he is.

As for Michelle and Charmaine, which was better? Michelle's Cheung Ping was a lot more elegant because she never had to be banned from the palace plus her Cheung Ping was like this sick weakling all the time, but very intelligent. She later learned some kung fu and became sort of a nun later but truthfully don't remember all of it.

Themesongs

A total of I think 3 subsongs all sung by Steven and the main with both him and Charmaine. Steven has such a beautiful voice. Even though he isn't as talented as someone as Andy Lau, but I think he's a really good singer. Charmaine, this was her first true gig and I just have to say it sounds very amateur like and she shouldn't quit her day job. Songs on a whole was very nice and lyrics very touching. I absolutely love it! Actually, it was one of the reasons why I really wanted to see the series after watching the themevideo.

So should you watch it???

Actually yeah. It's not the neat and nice 20 episode romantic comedy that TVB produces so much of. It's a tragic drama that can be a tear jerker if you let it. I mean the characters go through so much that with certain characters you just want a happy ending and with others you serious wish they die a thousand deaths, which is what a good drama does. The story was well paced but the first couple of episodes were dragged a little especially the kids' story. Then it picked up and got interesting. Personally, interesting parts to me were just about politics when there's Moses coming to his senses and wants to win and break his losing streak which there were a lot of. If you aren't into drama stuff and seriously want something lighthearted and easily to understand if you missed a couple chapters, this ain't it. It's pretty intense stuff even though I think the battle scenes can be choreographed a little better, but stuff that will make you want to either want to kill someone with your bare hands, weep because it's just too sad, or maybe chuckle at a joke or two. Mainly at Michael Tong because he provided much of the light comedy here. Some scenes were beautifully shot and others were just plain corny, but give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Plot

(Sorry for the choppiness in the names, I watched this many months ago so some of the names I can't remember).

Anyways, story wise, about this very unattractive girl, Joey Yung's Ah Peg, who became a thing of beauty after plastic surgery and so forth but with one mission, to find a wife for Roger's, egotistic, condescending, insensitive, greedy, I think you get the picture, "Jerk" character in 3 months.

Story

Ah Peg is not only overweight but her nose is a bit big and her teeth a little bucked. However, she feels that being a good person that works hard she'll overcome her appearances and have a successful life. So she works hard at her PR job even though it's a place for the gorgeous girls to work. One day, a new boss comes into town in the form of the nasty Leonardo, or Nardo who has some history with Peg. Peg was in the streets one day and found Nardo passed out so she came and did CPR on him, this triggers mass media on their story making Nardo already embarrassed on the first day of job.

I guess because Ah Peg is ugly and that she had to save his life that way, he has this grudge against her and determined to get her fired. Of course it was a success and now "fei Peg" is jobless. On top of that, she found out her boyfriend (cameo appearance by "a suffering from bad haircut" Ellesmere Choi) has been cheating on her with actually her friend and colleague. Ah Peg gets another blow when she finds out some stuff she shouldn't have concerning her family so this adds to the enormous amount of pressure. She decides to get plastic surgery because she's lost all hope of just being the nice one with the ugly face.

However, complications happened during surgery and Ah Peg is left in a coma. Her spirit then is traveled to the heavens and made a deal with them; she can come back and be her pretty self but under one condition, in 3 months she has to find a wife for the despicable Nardo. Aiding her with the task is her guardian angel in a form of Dog Dog, a real dog but Ah Peg sees him as human form (Johnson Lee).

As the story progress, lots of characters are introduced like the dashing prince charming Wilson, the obvious rich boy but kind of a wimp who's interested in Ah Peg, the pretty and sophisticated Tramy that Nardo wants to court, Michelle the naïve kind young girl who's interested in Wilson, and Betty, Wilson's cousin who's been madly in love with him.

Nardo changing for the better!

At the middle of the series, Nardo hits rock bottom where he lost self respect, money, family, you name it he lost it, even hair! Anyways, though at first he wanted revenge on Ah Peg because he thought she was responsible for his failure but he then changed for the better. Also at this time, he starts falling for Ah Peg because of all her support and everything.

Wilson-Ah Peg-Michelle-Betty

Ok, so bare with me a little while. Ah Peg is instantly attracted to Wilson, well, who can blame her, rich handsome guy, who wouldn't? So Wilson and Ah Peg start dating for a while. However, Ah Peg leaves the country and enters Michelle a…um, actually I don't' know what she is but very rich and pretends to be Nardo's brother-in-law's niece. (Rain is Nardo's sister, and that's her husband). Wilson and Michelle meet and he's drawn to her spontaneity and is definitely attracted to her, however, he's still with Ah Peg. Betty is in the picture as Wilson's over seas cousin who's been in love with him for years but he doesn't have any feelings for her. However, he has to pretend to like her because of his father's wishes for them to get married, something about the fortune and all that. So Wilson is single handily juggling not 2 but 3 women! Anyways, Ah Peg finds out and leaves Wilson but Wilson is persistent that he only loves Ah Peg. However, because of Ah Peg's premonition of seeing Wilson killing himself in front of a grave (presumably hers) therefore, she tries to end things between them so he won't get hurt in the end.

Nardo-Tramy

He likes her but because of his personality she despises him. From seeing him treat old people badly, and his own family members badly she can't stand the sight of him. However, Ah Peg is determined to hook them up because she thinks Tramy's the destined one that Nardo has to marry. So she tries to set them in hopes to fulfill her end of the bargain with the heavens, up but disaster results.

Nardo-Ah Peg

Since I spoiled so much of the others I don't want to ruin this one for you. Just know that Ah Peg and Nardo couldn't stand each other, but Ah Peg just has this need for changing Nardo so she begins to support and try to make him a better person. Nardo began to see the lengths of what Ah Peg would do for him and he begins to fall for her. Hmmm…as for other things, watch and find out! Or actually, read on I'm sure I'll spoil something else along the way.

The Cast

Joey Yung

This totally was a Joey series that focused a lot on her character, life, love life, etc well, for at least the beginning part. And so did Joey carry that weight on her shoulders well? Well before I answer that question, I would have to say first, her character was written to be so likeable. Ah Peg is a very kind, cute, and would do anything for the people she loved person. That's why she broke up with Wilson because she didn't want him to get hurt because of her. Then she and Nardo went out, she thought that Tramy might commit suicide because of Roger, so she broke up with him, or something like that. Anyways, a very noble and selfless character. But of course if someone stepped all over her, like Nardo in the beginning she won't let that happened either, but I must point out only after she was pretty. So as Ah Peg, Joey did show all these things. She made me really like her character and feel for her when she was happy or sad. Joey Yung I wouldn't say is beautiful but she is pretty and has an adorable face. As for acting wise, although she did a good job, in some scenes she tends to overact a little, like when she tried to get a confession out of Roger if he liked her or not. She was too jumpy and whiny, kind of a pain. But overall an enjoyable performance.

Roger Kwok

Is it me, or is this man growing more and more handsome in everything he's in? Not only that, he's such a good actor. In the beginning he was such a horrible person that seriously you wanted to wish death upon him. However, with ease he transformed himself into the lovable guy that I couldn't help but love. For me, it's Roger's Nardo that kept me watching and interested. He was such a um…I can't say that word, but not only was he a mean and insensitive guy, he lied to his family, tried to cheat everyone just for his benefit on top of t hat he thinks he's so cool. All with his "Come on, go, go, go!" attitude half made me want to punch him and half laugh right in his face. But his transformed Nardo was just too adorable to watch. He was the opposite of everything he had been before. Yeah…towards the end you kind of see the shallowness when he couldn't stand to face Ah Peg when she's turned into her prior-plastic surgery figure, but when he figured he'll lose her forever, he truly changed. He understood that the only beauty that matters is what's inside. So as for Roger, I would say he was excellent. I watched it because at first I was just interested in his character to see how such a bad person can change into such a sweet guy and Roger did that and his transformation was believable.

Kevin Cheng

The first time I saw him, I thought he was a little scary because he was this psychopath in the very boring Network Love Story but then I thought he was so attractive in his other series like Burning Flames II/Slim Chances. In here, he was cool, whatever Roger tried to achieve with his come on, go, go, go!, he did it with ease. His character was a wimp but he then stood up to his dad said he didn't want to marry his cousin which kind of caused a lot of problems, but he stood up for himself. I would say his way of dealing with women can improve some for I thought he was just so unfair to all three of them. As for acting, he was stiff in his prior series like Burning Flames but in here he was good. Nothing earth shattering or anything but not a wallflower either, his character was sweet as both boyfriend to Joey and good friend to Roger, so I did enjoy both him and his character. Chemistry wise with Joey, I liked them together. Something I don't understand though. How did Joey all of a sudden lose interest in his Wilson and started to like Nardo. Yeah, she was spending lots of time with him, but when she broke up with Wilson, it wasn't she didn't' love him anymore. She seemed so in love with Wilson before, I don't understand how that just died out.

Margaret Chung

I felt like she disappeared or something for a couple of years and now she's back with unfortunately smaller roles. Well, I didn't like her character one bit in here. I could've cared less about her and her obsession with Kevin. In the beginning she was so clingy then she just became pathetic. Yeah, she did change by learning how to take care of herself and so forth but really, I thought Kevin was too good for her. Margaret Chung did ok, I mean first I don't like the character so I didn't really pay too much attention to her but she didn't improve or gotten worse over time. An all right performance but nothing too eye-catching.

Tiffany Lam

One of the Ms. HK's I think either this year or last, maybe this year (She was Miss HK 2002 & now officially retired back to studying-Ed). Anyways, for her first series I thought she did an ok job. She still got loads to work on but compared her to like Sonija who took 2 or 3 years to just be adequate, she did learn fast. I don't' think she's at all pretty though, too much makeup but I don't see anything attractive about her. As for character, she was cold and cool in the beginning with Roger but I thought that he deserved it so didn't mind. But towards the end, she was also another pathetic character. She had an old boyfriend who left her or something and promised to come back, but of course he didn't. After Roger transformed she thought that he resembled her ex so she clung to him like a leech. She even knew that he was seeing Joey, but of course she didn't care. Very selfish and irresponsible, but again, Tiffany herself did an ok job, nothing terrible at all.

Victoria Jolly

Unlike Tiffany who did an ok job, she was horrible, by the way she's also another Miss HK(She was Miss HK First Runner Up 2002 if I am not mistaken & now also officially retired back to studying-Ed). Oh my god! Her Cantonese is worse than mine and she looks like this doll without an expression all the time, especially when she had all that make up on, totally scary! Instead of being a cute character who's impulsive and naïve, she annoyed the heck out of me. Definitely the worse performance in here compared to everyone else. But again, it's her first series so I won't say too many mean things about her.

Johnson Lee

Dog Dog. The dog is very cute and I would imagine obedient in real life. As the dog, at first, Johnson did at times act like one, with his tongue sticking out and so forth. He provided some of the humor in the series and actually it was the funniest thing when all of a sudden Roger would be hearing voices and it would be of Dog Dog's/or now we have to say Roger's grandfather. Hilarious the way he sang those old songs and everything that would just freak Roger out and thought he was getting mental. Very enjoyable character.

Others

Since I'm getting lazy, here's some others I thought should be mentioned. First, Rain Lau who got cheated of a bigger role. I don't' understand why TVB is not promoting her enough, give her any meaty role and she'll be awesome in it. Maybe though, she's having conflict with filming Virtues of Harmony II, I don't' know, but she didn't show up that much to me. She was funny as usual but just a waste of talent basically.

Joey's sister, played by Nancy Wu was cute. I enjoyed her and her pair with Roger's brother, Jack Wu, who by the way is also not bad to look at. There little love life isn't shown that much but it's sweet when they're on screen. Lo Hoi Pang gave his veteran performance along with both Liu Kai Chi and Rebecca Chan as parents of the main couple. Sometimes funny as the nosey parents meddling into their children's love lives, but of course at the same time caring parents that'll do anything for them.

Belinda Hammnet's character at first was obsessed with Roger she even lied that she was pregnant just so she could get close to Roger, so another pathetic character who'll do anything for just the affection of a guy. She got annoying when she goes, 'come on baby cheer up" all the time too. What's up with this series and weird English phrases? However, Belinda herself was very into her role and I would say she was above even good as, man, I forgot her name in here.

Odds and Ends

The theme of the series of course was beauty isn't something that appearance can measure but of who you are. A very common and classic theme for TVB to use. But why make Joey pretty again if that's what you want to convey? That would defeat the whole purpose. But as you watched you'll see, if Joey told a lie or did something that was evil her old features like her nose or teeth will come back. So she truly has to be a good person in order to keep her outer beauty. Even towards the end while dating Roger, Joey transformed into her old self again, Roger didn't realized that appearance isn't everything until it was too late. So good theme but once used too many times in here.

Roger and Joey as a couple. I forgot totally to mention about them, since it's what the series is all about. Roger to me has been paired with so many actresses but I think the best would have to be with Charmaine Sheh. They were just too cute together. Yeah, there's the recent all hyped about Square Pegs and some might argue and Jess is his best match. Well, that's not the Roger that I'm talking about. Usually, Roger's the cool, average and very modern Joe that he's been so many times, so as that he Charmaine fits him best. Anyways, as for Joey, they seem more of a best friend, best buddy kind of thing in the beginning. As the story progressed, you can see that the characters will do anything for each other especially at the end Roger would do anything to see Joey again was just a tug at the heart. The two deserve to be together. But you know what? I thought it would be a little more definitive of his love if Joey came back as being ugly again but Roger wouldn't care and still be with her. Of course at the very end a very cliché ending, she'll be pretty again somehow. Too corny for your liking, huh?

Themesong was sung by both Joey and ROGER! I know! Roger singing? Well, it wasn't bad but I have to say that Joey is a good singer with a very sweet voice. The actual themesong though was a little weird, upbeat appropriate for the series but still won't win a Grammy or anything.

Should you spend your money on this or not?

Yup. It's entertaining, heart warming, funny even though it has elements of every other series you've seen. However, it's refreshing to see Joey in a series again and another excuse to see Roger at his best. There's of course Kevin and usually I'll watch him in anything. The plot was well paced, not too many drag parts, story although not anything new and innovative, but it was pretty well told. Performers did their best and again, the one who stood out was Roger. Give it a try, you'll laugh, frown and hope for everyone to have a good ending.

Rating

Interesting Facts

Both Tiffany and Victoria aren't going to renew their contract with TVB because both want to continue their education, something I find so refreshing in young girls. Instead of being drawn to stardom and fame, well in HK at least, they turned down their opportunity to go back to school in I think Australia. Good for them and I wish them the best.

Ratings for this series weren't bad at all actually until the ending episodes though, but I think it was contributed to Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. Just shows how popular Roger's getting!

"Story ... About the legendary Kam Sai Wai, who truthfully till now I haven’t heard of..."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Released

2003

Cast

Raymond Lam

MichelleYip

Rain Lee

Eddie Cheung

Fiona Yuen

Mimi Lo

Jimmy Au

Story

About the legendary Kam Sai Wai, who truthfully till now I haven’t heard of. The story focuses on his journey in “mo lam” and of course his struggle with the two women in his life, Rain and Michelle, (forgot their names).

Plot

So Kam Sai Wai is this jungle boy who lived with his xi fu where there’s no civilization. His master died leaving him just alone and instructed him to go where there is land and find Lui Sai Leung. During his journey he befriends Michelle and a monk, who was very amusing but again forgot his name.

Like a martial arts series, this contains twists turns, obstacles that Kam Sai Wai, our Raymond has to face. And of course the most difficult of them all, choosing between two lovely chicas Michelle and Rain. Oh, before I forget, Michelle has a special identity, an assassin instructed to cause chaos in the mo lam world. Rain on the other hand is the innocent little girl who is Lui Sai Leung’s disciple but for some reason in here, just always cries and in need of rescue.

I’ll stop right here because a) I don’t want to ruin too much if you haven’t seen it, and b) well, I kind of forgot most of the sub plot.

Raymond Lam as Kam Sai Wai

I remembered enjoying him a lot in here. Not only that, but he adds a charm to it. He didn’t fight that much because now a days, computer does most of the fighting for the actors so we basically see him fly around a lot everywhere. For example, by just raising one hand, a million soldiers all fall to their feet, impossible to me, but I guess cool to the producers. Ok, back to acting. Raymond, to me is a great actor for not being in the business too long. His character might be a little boring but sometimes, it’s just cute to watch him being a dupe I guess. I do have to complain that the script didn’t tell me exactly who he really liked. I mean, in the beginning I thought it was Rain because he was just too nice to her and terrible to Michelle. But in the end, of course it was all different. So maybe he did like her but it just wasn’t shown well. Ok, now on grooming tips, Raymond, the hair really needs to go. Plus isn’t it in the Qing Dynasty where every dude’s hair is supposedly in braids? Wouldn’t he be stopped every block if his hair is so untamed like that?

Michelle as- I remember! Shing Nam

She I had to say was the only female character I liked! Which is so unusual for me to like Michelle in anything. First, I don’t like Michelle as an actress because I seriously think all she does is have just one face and then say her lines. But I do give her credit when there’s a scene which calls for her to be super mad; she’s awesome in those scenes. Luckily in here, her character’s personality saved her and I truly enjoyed her. Although, at times I just felt like screaming, “make a facial expression, anything!” I have to say, her acting has improved, still has some room for more, but on a whole she’s not a terrible actress anymore. With Raymond, they were a cute couple possibly because they had all that chemistry when working on Eternal Happiness. Truthfully, I like them better in here than the stubborn, sometimes unreasonable Mang Lai Kuan, and the dense headed Wong Fu Siu Wah. Anyways, good job for Michelle for making me like her.

Rain as Chi Wah

All the names are slowly coming back to me!

Anyways, this chic cannot act! I thought Michelle was bad, she was worse than Michelle! I do like her singing though so I’ll give her a break. Just practice some more and come back. As Chi Wah though, the character really annoyed me. Every minute I knew she was going to do something to irk me. Chemistry with Raymond was well, ok. They were rumored to be going out so they couldn’t be that bad on screen right? Maybe because I wasn’t really paying attention to the two of them, but I didn’t see any sparks there. Her character to me was just too weak. It drove me nuts when Fiona did something to her and she wouldn’t fight back or even talk back to her. Everything Raymond had to do for her.

Fiona Yuen

Wow she was the b word in here. I just couldn’t stand her. However, she was very pretty and I will always think Fiona is cute. Her chemistry with Hui Siu Hung was less than zero. Couldn’t stomach them.

Mimi Lo's Lee Sum Mui and Chan Kwok Bong's Kong Nam

Thank goodness for these two! They were making me laugh as the series was going on. They fit together also as a good couple. Mimi is actually quite pretty, she also is a good actress and is very natural in all her scenes. However, for some reason I couldn’t stand her in Treasure Raiders, but I’ll be looking forward to her upcoming series. Chan Kwok Bong, this guy just makes me laugh when he’s standing there. I am so grateful for him for making this series as enjoyable as it is because of him. However, he’s character’s attitude towards Michelle could use some adjustment.

Eddie Cheung

Ah Eddie! He really got cheated of a better role. He appeared so little that I just really feel unfair for him. Well, he’s definitely retiring now and that’s it with him and TVB. He was Mimi’s overprotective daddy in here and what can I say, it’s just Eddie giving his veteran performance. We’ll miss you Eddie!

Jimmy Au

Another veteran guy I that I love. You know in the 80’s I remembered him being so cute! Well, in here he’s the beggar’s king but because of the evil Tsang Wai Kin he lost his life and eventually handed the title to our very long haired Raymond. Good performance by Jimmy but again being underrated.

What’s good about it?

Well, it’s been a super long time since I’ve seen something of martial arts or about the “mo lam” that captured my attention. Although, there were some dragged parts, the series as a whole was quite entertaining and brings back some of the longing, for me, to see a great martial arts series. So give it a chance, and hopefully, TVB would in the future remake something that has lots of sword fights, twists and turns, etc about the kung fu and martial arts, because I’m ready for something really good.

The ending. Not a typical happy one so it was refreshing. Both Raymond and Michelle did really well in it, especially Michelle. She could cry and I didn’t think it was fake! Raymond, at first was nonchalant which was upsetting to me and then he figured out what was up and finally spilled his heart out. Well, not really, but his expressions just told us that yeah…he really did care for Michelle and he’s genuinely sad that she’s gone. As for Rain, I think I let out a chuckle when Raymond left her standing by the river. I know, I’m horrible but hey, she annoyed me.

What’s not so good about it?

It was kind of short so not a lot of stuff happened for me to include it as an adequate kung fu series like my favorite Legend of the Condor Heroes where like a million things happened to the main characters. I know, who asks for a long series since I’m so against Virtues of Harmony which is like a 1198 episodes long. But it doesn’t have to be that long, just long enough so things develop and story to spice up!

I wouldn’t say dragged storyline but there’s isn’t any hype about it either. Nothing too twisty or turny that I was like…OH MY GOD! How did they pull that off? But all in all it wasn’t boring either.

Should you rent it or not?

Yes…it’s something to watch because it is entertaining. It’s not a masterpiece but it’s not a piece of trash either. Watch for Raymond if you’re his fan and definitely for Michelle’s improvement and likable character.

Introduction

A sometimes tragic drama about the life of Cheng Ban Kiu, a gifted scholar who is an expert in drawing bamboo trees apparently with so much feeling that when people stare at his paintings they seem to get lost in them. Starring Wong Hei as the main lead, we see him mature from an innocent naïve artist to a generous court official in the Ching dynasty. We also see his love affair with Gigi Lai’s Wong Nhut Jie but fortunately the two were separated and Ban Kiu is forced to marry Nnadia Chan’s Chun Xiang, who at first he despised but grew to love.

Background Info

Wong Hei lives in a small village with his dad, little brother and an old maid. He has this thing for drawing bamboo trees but his father seriously opposes to it because he thinks all artists never get what they deserve unless they’re dead…kind of true. Anyways, Wong Hei feels his talent is being wasted at home so he decides to travel to another town in hopes of someday he’ll be recognized for his work.

Chun Pui is the 2nd king of the Ching dynasty, I think Hong Hei, correct me if I’m wrong. He’s a decent king but his spared time is used observing paintings that Gilbert Lam, one of his officials that gets paid going around the country finding exquisite paintings, presents him. He has at least 14 sons, and the 14th and 4th are constantly at each other’s throats for the throne all the time.

At his new home a prosperous place where all the artist congregate, Wong Hei befriends Mak Bao, and Mok Kar Yiu, who also are fellow artists. Mak Bao has a mind to solely make money while Mok Kar Yiu is another artist who has potential but can never seem to get famous. Together with Wong Hei they become best buds and face troubles to come.

Gigi and Wong Hei

Gigi comes into the story as a very rich girl but dressed as a man. She and Wong Hei meet and she asked him to draw for her a painting but later mysteriously disappears. Wong Hei feels responsible for her disappearance and is determined to search for her. He found her in one of those “prostitute” houses and decides to find money so he can help buy her out of there. And here we begin their love story, Wong Hei fell for Gigi and vice versa shortly after. Gigi however, has this memory problem so she doesn’t remember who she is and so forth. Wong Hei then is determined to help her regain her memory and find her family. Now Nnadia comes into play. Turns out that she’s Gigi’s maid who also traveled to this prosperous town in search for her master. They reunite and Nnadia calls for Gigi’s mother to come pick Gigi up. Gigi’s mom arrives to find her daughter falling for a poor artist and gets outraged. She does everything she can to separate the two and she succeeds in the end which kind of ends Gigi and Wong Hei’s affair.

Nnadia and Wong Hei

They first met when Nnadia was selling this special kind of wonton soup, but the wonton is in shape of a fish, I really don’t know how to explain it. Anyways, Wong Hei was forced to marry Nnadia because on the wedding day Gigi’s mom switched Gigi with Nnadia. Wong Hei gets furious and in the beginning couldn’t stand to face Nnadia. But surely enough he gradually fell for her because of all the sacrifices and devotion she gave to his family. Unfortunately, Nnadia had a terrible ending and passed away.

Myolie and Wong Hei

Myolie is a street girl who steals for a living. She bumps into Wong Hei one day and decides to steal from him therefore not leaving a good impression on him. Nnadia feels that Myolie is truly a good person but just needs a little guidance so she takes her into the family. Before Nnadia died, she made Wong Hei and Myolie get married first and Myolie promise that she’ll take care of Wong Hei. Knowing Wong Hei, he also treated this wife badly saying that he only loved Nnadia and no one can replace her. Myolie though, keeping her promise to Nnadia stayed by Wong Hei’s side and helped him through thick and thin.

So why doesn’t Gigi’s mom let her marry Wong Hei?

Simple, because he’s poor. Actually, there was a time that she approved of Wong Hei and Gigi together. You see (here we get some of the theme of the movie-drawing), Chun Pui, figures out that Wong Hei has this special talent to draw and wanted him to take Gilbert’s place and work as an official. Gigi’s mom in hearing this is in bliss because Wong Hei will inevitably become rich. Unfortunately, Chun Pui died (I think Tsang Wah Kin, his 4th son killed him) and there was no hope now for Wong Hei to become anything, therefore, the mom ditched him like a smelly sock.

How does Nnadia die?

Because of Wong Hei. She was saving him from a falling light thing that probably weighed a ton, and the huge thing collapsed on her. She was supposed to be fine but at the very same time, she was pregnant which harmed her health if she continued to carry the baby. She made up her mind to keep the baby, which went against doctor’s orders, and ended up getting weaker and weaker as the baby grew. She refused to tell Wong Hei that she was dying and carrying his baby, so he’s all blissfully thinking that he’ll be a dad soon.

Why did Wong Hei finally accept Myolie?

It was this roller coaster ride that we witnessed with Nnadia, only faster. So he resented Myolie and treated her like dirt because he couldn’t accept her. Then one day Gigi came back and made Wong Hei’s life hell again. Myolie warned him that Gigi was here to cause trouble but he wouldn’t listen. But in the end, Wong Hei almost lost his head and realized that Myolie truly cares for him and became touched.

How did Gigi make Wong Hei’s life Hell?

Well, there were two times. The first time, she begged him to paint this painting for her that was important to Mark, which could have caused Wong Hei and his family their lives.

Then the second time, she tried to kill him because she came back for revenge. Long story. Anyways, Gigi begged Wong Hei to paint this painting that he and Chun Pui painted together many moons ago that Mark accidentally ruined. Wong Hei does it and when Mark presented the painting, he got beheaded and his whole family also got punished by sending them to one of those desert things that people can’t live in. So Gigi thinks it’s because of Wong Hei that her husband died. She at first befriends him and makes him think that she has forgiven him for the past, then she backstabs him which almost cost him his head.

The Ending?

Gigi realized that Wong Hei had no part in her husband’s death and in the end confessed to free Wong Hei and became a nun. Myolie thought she accomplished her duty to Nnadia and thought that Wong Hei will never love her so she left him. Wong Hei after learning that Myolie left realized that he really does love her, so he ran after her and the two left together, very sweet!

The Hate Factor

Nnadia’s death!! I am so mad that she died! She was so loving and giving and did not deserve her tragic ending. You know what else ticked me off? How Wong Hei was so oblivious to everything. I mean dude, she was fainting and looking very pale right in front of his eyes and he didn’t think that there was something wrong with her! He to me did not love her enough or was just really blind. I mean yeah, she said oh it’s nothing, but he should have a) asked Myolie what it is and I’m sure after a few cold stares and mean looks Wong Hei can spill something out of her, or b) make her go see a doctor and find out himself. Jeez…I don’t’ know what to say but because of his negligence that’s why she’s dead.

Gigi Lai. I just don’t like her character. I mean, yeah she was nice and everything in the beginning but she just annoyed me. Then she became bad and that was it, officially hate her. Sorry Gigi fans, but I have to say it here. I don’t like Gigi as an actress. I think she’s so arrogant in all of her characters. The first time I saw her was in HSDS and my I couldn’t stand her. Again, she was just too arrogant for my liking and that ruined the character. In here she was nice yes, but I still sense the arrogance and especially when she turned evil, something about this actress really irks me.

Gigi’s mother. What was up with this woman? I mean, she just was there to cause trouble for everyone. But because of her, we get to see Wong Hei and Nnadia together.

Gigi and Wong Hei as a couple. I just don’t like them together.

The Cute factor

Nnadia and Wong Hei. They were just really cute, although you don’t see him really show any love to her until she’s sick and dying but they were just so cute. I love the part when she would do little things for him like wait for him at night and stuff. My favorite part would have to be when she was caught doing chores for the whole town just so he can teach the town kids and he found out. He was really grateful and you can tell he’s slowly changing to accept her.

Myolie. Her character was very cute and just fun to watch. To me she had more personality than Nnadia did. At least Myolie had the guts to yell at Wong Hei a few times, unlike Nnadia who didn’t dare to defy him.

Myolie and Wong Hei. At first, I just didn’t think I could tolerate Wong Hei with her because I just loved Nnadia and felt really sorry for her. But they also proved to be a very cute couple. It was nice to see him soften up to her as he realized who really cares and sacrifices for him.

Mak Bao and Mak Kar Yiu. I didn’t talk about them much because besides being Wong Hei’s best friends and having some screen time, they didn’t have a sub plot centering around them. But nevertheless, these two were cute as supporting actors, and sometimes serves as a comedy factor.

Gilbert Lam. His first performance with TVB was in WTLB, which I missed, then in BFII he was gay, and the first time I saw him since ATV. Yeah, in here he was bad but because I’ve seen him so much in ATV productions that he is always just cute to me. (Especially in Heroine of the Yang family where he and Annie Man made one of the cutest couples to date!) Anyways, he and Akina Hong Wah in here supposedly have a “thing”. His character was a bad guy and had a pretty bad ending but I still like him. Just wish TVB will promote him more and pair him up with Annie!

Raymond Cho. You probably wondering what he was doing in here. He’s actually Tsang Wai Kin’s son/Chun Pui’s grandson, and a very noble king. He’s the king that every other Ching’s dynasty movie’s about. But anyways, he wanted to correct his father’s way of ruling the country because he was kind of a tyrant, and stumbled upon Wong Hei who he grew to admire. His performance was not bad but he for some reason was just cute in here. I don’t think he gets recognized enough by TVB though. Sometimes, he’ll get huge roles, and sometimes it’s like he’s an extra.

Love/Hate Wong Hei?

Wong Hei’s character, Cheng Ban Kiu sometimes made me want to hug him and then sometimes made me want to hit where it hurts.

Love Wong Hei

The beginning when we just get to meet him. He was so honorable and loving that you really want to hug him, then ask yourself, where did the funny childish Wong Hei go?

Hating Wong Hei

When he just got married to Nnadia and still head over heals in love with Gigi. Oh my God, I really wanted to punch him. He was just so mean. You know Wong Hei and his slit like eyes, I’m not trying to be mean, I think they’re adorable, but man, his looks can kill. Every time he gave Nnadia the evil look you can just feel the hatred and “I wish you were dead” vibe he was giving her. This is one guy that I just didn’t want to get near.

Love Wong Hei again

When he grew the mustache and became this mature man. You can tell he really cared about Nnadia and forgotten about Gigi, temporarily. Then when Nnadia died he did constantly think about her and everything, which was very sweet. You just wanted to hug him again.

Hating him

When he met Gigi again. After Gigi miraculously came back from the dead, this was after Nnadia death, he just went googoo gaga again for her. Again he was oblivious, hey title Doomed to Oblivion, totally true! She tried to be sweet like before but you can tell there was something weird and different about her. She was out to get him! But he couldn’t see that because he was too blind. Anyways, he did things like arrest Myolie and listen to Gigi, which made me really want to punch him again.

Loving finally again

When he found out the truth and realized that Myolie was always there for him. It was so sweet when he ran after Myolie and he tied her hand to his so she wouldn’t leave him. Very touching and sweet, just made me want to hug both of them.

So should you bother with this series?

YES!! Although, Nnadia and Gigi didn’t have great endings, but it was a touching and truly great series. The background music was awesome with bamboo flutes and everything that made me get the chills every time I listened to it. Especially the song when Wong Hei starts to draw and you’re suppose to get this feeling that you are lost in a bamboo forest. Even though, I don’t think the bamboo paintings are unbelievably magnificent and I don’t see how a painting of just black paint markings can resemble a real forest, the music just gets to me. The supporting casts did really well. Wong Hei gave a superb performance who falls for every sing woman in the series, except for Akina. Basically, go watch the series, you won’t be disappointed.

Plot Summary

Set during the Tang dynasty, the series revolves around the business and life of 3 matchmakers and one court marshal.

Storyline

The Ling Ho family has been for many generations matchmaking officials in the imperial court, which till this day I had no idea existed. So their job is to ensure that no one is breaking any marital laws, give out marriage licenses, investigate the soon to be married couple's backgrounds etc. Unfortunately, the most current family generation runs into a problem when all their children are girls. Therefore, when Ling Ho Hei was born the first wife lied to her husband and Ah Hei's real mother that she is actually a boy. Consequently she was raised as a boy and assumed all the family's responsibilities.

Now we have the private matchmakers termed "iced people" or something like that in the forms of Chuen Ka Fok and Lin Bak Hop. Both have unique personalities but with one goal in mind, to hook people up, and of course the reward money afterwards.

Bak Hop and Ka Fok got started off on the wrong foot and at first were at each others' throats. But then both figured out that together with their blessed ability of quick and smooth talking they'll go far in the business so the two decide to team up together and now open up a matchmaking business.

That leaves the honorable marshal Ko Fei in search of his savior who he's ready to marry if he finds her. So the four meet each other have misunderstandings, mingle a while and hoila they all are working together and of course the relationships between the characters develop.

Ko Fei and Ho Hei

Ko Fei and Ho Hei develop first a friendship but at first site Ho Hei admired the honorable swordsman. So there's a lot of the chic dressed in man clothes stealing glances here and there at the hero and then him just looking at her awkwardly. In the meantime, Ko Fei found out who his savior was, a little maid name Sheung Sheung that has the strength of like 10 men and is devoted to take care of her and win her affection.

Bak Hop and Ka Fok

Bak Hop and Ka Fok have a different story. Originally, Ka Fok was supposed to marry Bak Hop but through an arrange marriage. His dad is in debt and need to pay off by "selling" his son to be Bak Hop's husband. Ka Fok can't accept that so what does he do? On the wedding day he flees out of town leaving Bak Hop embarrassed and scarred for life. However, the two never met each other so with a series of name changing and so forth they don't actually know who the other's identity is. Basically they do find out and demand a divorce, fight some more, demand some more, stuff like that. So as probably you've guessed, the two spending as much time together as they did OF COURSE they'll develop feelings for each other. Yeah, stuff we've seen.

Bouncing back to Ko Fei and Ho Hei

Back to Ko Fei, he feels that no matter what he does he'll never gain the love of Sheung Sheung so he begins to give up. Well turns out, he gets a little confused too because all of a sudden he's having these strange feelings for his Ling Ho tai. Confused and scared he tried to focus on wooing Sheung Sheung, but all becomes useless because he can't deny his feelings. Finally though, the clever Ko Fei caught on and figured out that Ling Ho Tai was actually Ling Ho mei but they still kept it under wraps because if she's exposed then her whole family would probably get beheaded for lying to the king and court and so forth.

Sheung Sheung factor

The little maid is actually totally infatuated by Ka Fok, so she follows him and tries to gain his affection. Of course Ka Fok has his eyes only for Bak Hop. So every time he tries to express his feelings to her, Sheung Sheung comes out of no where and caused lots of misunderstandings. Bak Hop seeing that she doesn't want to hurt Sheung Seung, willingly leaves the triangle. However, no worries! Sheung Sheung finally figures out that love can't be forced and finds it elsewhere in form of an 8 year old trapped in a grown man's body, Ping On, who actually is Ka Fok's uncle. (The guy was traumatized at the age of 8 and became this way all his life. Ka Fok who's partially responsible for this mishap always look after and takes good care of his uncle.)

The Ending

So how did all the confusion and mess get resolved? Well, Ling Ho Hei's secret did come out and the family was put on trial and the final sentence was I think death. But with the help of Ka Fok, Bak Hop and Ko Fei the charges were dropped but now they faced with a new bigger problem. Turns out there's this court official who's been plotting for the throne and guess who comes in to save the day? Yup our lovely matchmakers.

So when that's all done with, there's a new problem. The king just went ahead and made these orders that our characters couldn't live with like making Ka Fok marrying Sheung Sheung, sentencing Ling Ho Hei to be nun, stuff like that. However, love triumphs all and all the couples lived happily ever after, Ka Fok +Bak Hop, and Ko Fei-Ho Hei.

Comments on Characters

After watching Perish in the Name of Love, I was curious to see our two leading men; Steven and Moses tackle roles that are much different. Steven played an out of the ordinary role for himself as a fast talking, quick witted matchmaker who to my surprise had some personality. Moses on the other hand was the kind of dull but honorable official who realized that true love can't be forced.

Maggie Cheung recently, besides in Police Station No. 7, has been constantly playing these overly confident and even at times arrogant, independent characters, which I'm getting tired of. Sometimes it's annoying for me to see her character that overly confident. With Steven Ma although it's amusing and funny at times to see them argue and bicker about petty things but it gets tiring after every episode of the same thing. Finally it's even more boring to see them fall in love after all that "hatred". Probably because I'm so tired of seeing a bickering pair fall in love, I liked seeing them fight but still remain friendly when it came to business. Is it that common for couples to hate each other first and fall in love later?? According to TVB it's always true! Can't they find another way for couples to get together! Almost every series I'm seeing these days has this element! From my personal experience, if I hate somebody it's so hard for me to change my views of them so why does it look so easy with TVB?

Anyways, back to Maggie. She's very pretty in here with her costumes, hair and makeup however, performance wise I don't think she was that remarkable. Like I said before, I think she's done a lot of this so it's not anything new to her, however, there were jokes here and there which forced her to be funny. I'm noticing now though, Maggie overacts at times. When it's serious or requires her to cry, I think she's flawless at that. But when a scene requires her to be funny it seems she's so forced in them with her face expressions and everything. This was especially in Burning Flames II. Man, Maggie fans are probably going to be writing me threat e-mails now. Sorry if I've offended anyone but that's what I truly think.

Steven Ma's performance actually was quite different from any other I've seen. As Chow Sai Hin in Perish in the Name of Love he was honorable, serious, the perfect guy so to speak, what he's always played before. Ka Fok is totally different from anything I've seen Steven portrayed. He's actually funny! He never once gave the impression that he was honest and upright but rather sneaky and witty. I quite enjoyed the character actually, he was fun to watch and had personality which was just so refreshing for Steven Ma. I'm not saying that he's a dull person in real life, in fact I don't think that's true at all. I just think that in most of his series he's tired of being Mr. Nice Guy all the time and I'm so glad there's a change. Steven acting wise however was the same as in Perish in the Name of Love he didn't improve or worsen. He's an average actor but at times he still is too deliberate or to forced in his acting especially when he's pouting or when he's trying to use his hands to express something. Overall however, I enjoyed it when Steven was on screen. He was amusing and I liked his character's personality.

Moses Chan I used to think always looked like bad guy. Bad as in someone who's just so sleazy that I never thought he would be able to pull the Mr. Nice Guy off. However, after seeing Family Man and Perish in the Name of Love now I think he's one of the most versatile actors there is. I mean, if you could pull off being Sonija's boyfriend in Family Man and being her dad in PITNOL, you got some talent. (By the way, I did thought it was kind of weird for them to be father and daughter in PITNOL but for some reason, it wasn't all that disturbing, probably because of Moses' acting abilities). Anyways, Moses' character in here was too good to be true. Not only was he a great swordsman, he can recite poems at any point in time, he is also true to love. Because of Sheung Sheung coincidently being there to save him he fell immediately in love with her and is determined to win her heart. He was well into his role and I couldn't ask for more. I think from now on, I'll just enjoy Moses in anything since I am quickly becoming one of his fans.

Joyce Koi I think is originally an opera singer. I've seen her in some TVB productions but mainly I remember her as Sonija's sworn brother in Step in the Past. Seeing her again as a crossed dress man is no surprise to me. Her character Ling Ho Hei I have to say that I admire her. She is the head of the family and with a bunch of useless brother in laws that supposedly are helping her she has so much responsibility to take upon. When in comes the heroic Ko Fei no wonder she fell hard for him. Her acting though I would characterize as old school acting. She sometimes has these awkward movements and it's like she's in an opera scene. Yeah, I know, but she is an opera performer! Still, I think she should tone it down a little and be more natural in her acting. I bet she's awesome when she's on the stage but it's just doesn't sit right with me. I was so scared she'll burst out into opera song when it came to it. With Moses, I can't help it but find their relationship a bit weird, probably because she was a miscast and her character seems bland at times. Some may disagree with me, but I do think she looks very haggard and tired in here. Her face looks too tight which makes her sometimes expressionless therefore Ling Ho Hei as a character was not as likable as she should have been.

This is Cerina De Grace's first series and to my surprised she didn't irk me and did decently. Oh…I like her name, De Grace. Anyways, her character was a bit annoying, just how she clung to Ka Fok when obviously he had no feelings for her. Was she that stupid to not see it? Anyways, a bit of history on her, we find out that she's actually the only descendent of the heroic Sit family of the Tang dynasty. For those of you who've seen General Who Never Was, General Father General Son, know who I'm talking about. The Sit family started out with Sit Yun Gwai who was just this normal peasant who ate so much but had the strength of 10 men. Hence, Sheung Sheung's eating habits and her abnormal strength. Anyways, Cerina needs lots of practice before I can say she's a good actress. But knowing TVB she'll get lots of work anyhow. Her face is a little weird to me too probably because she's mixed. It looks sleepy or something all the time so I don't think she's all that cute. But do I enjoy her with August Kwan? Kind of, I guess by the end I just wanted Sheung Sheung out of the triangle and let Ka Fok and Bak Hop to get together and end everything.

This is the first series I saw August Kwan in for I missed his previous series with Michael Tong which I forgot the name of. He's a very good looking guy to me even though his character was like a little kid. His portrayal of Ping On was so likable for there was some complexity to his character. Even though he thinks like an 8 year old, he can remember something that he only has seen once to the last detail, some talent!

Guest Stars

A bunch of people were in here but as couples that our matchmakers have to set up. Some that stand out were Mak Bao's lovable widow and Winnie Yeung who also was a widow but have feelings that can't be expressed to each other. Mak Bao I heard is going to star in a series where he's the main lead! I'm so excited! Even though he isn't who I would call handsome but he has so much talent that I'm sure he'll be excellent in anything. I saw pictures though and he lost so much weight for the part and he looks very good! Anyways, all of the guest stars did their parts well and I enjoyed seeing them, especially the gorgeous Kevin Cheng. I actually thought his character was so funny, so barbaric and everything. Good performance. Also, the girl who he was paired with Sharon Chan is very pretty. Mark Kwok also had the role of a scholar who's so scared of woman talking, a childhood fear he has. Anyways, it was weird and refreshing to see Mark not as a jerk but a decent guy that you can root for.

Rent it or Forget it???

Well, cast and costume wise it was a decent production. The idea about matchmaking is also very novel but some elements are just too cliché. For example, how the matchmakers all of a sudden are wrapped into a political scheme and guess what?? They're the ones who have the ability to help the king out of it. Just too unbelievable and well, TVB has been there done that with other series. If you think about it, TVB has always done a series that centers around a theme and miraculously the main character because of possessing this talent is able to rescue the world or do something out of the ordinary because it. A little tiring and again far fetch. Ok…so back to the question right? Rent it or not. If you want laughs, I say yeah, it's funny and entertaining especially the first few episodes. But looking for a masterpiece it's far from that. Anyways, everybody probably have seen this series since it's like a billion years old!
