Plot
I can't remember the names of certain character, so for convenience sake I will use the actors' names instead.

Deric was a dedicated marshall with a promising career and a fiancee, Tavia who admires him until one day, he saved a rich but corrupted businessman (Hui Siu Hung) who inadvertantly gave him his new career as a magistrate in his town. The story was Deric's uncle accidentally killed somebody and Deric destroyed the evidence and asked the businessman, Hui to help bribe the magistrate which he did. Thinking that he had himself a puppet, Hui bought Deric his position, and zoom a few years later, Deric became a fat and lazy magistrate who is afraid to go against Hui's words for fear his uncle and himself may be implicated in that murder. Meanwhile Hui's son, Kenneth terrorises the town and Deric basically did nothing. He lost the respect of the townfolks who throw veges at him everytime they see him and Tavia ultimately gave up hope on him and refused to marry him until he becomes a good judge. Even Sammul, a young idealistic Mou Dong student disliked him and often said things disrespecting him.

Meanwhile Deric's father is his marshall who is also as disappointed in him as everybody else, he has a grandmother who sleeps more than anything else and he is assisted by his childhood friend, Eddie who became crippled and lost his kung fu when he was accidentally stabbed instead of Deric when Deric was saving Hui who was being attacked many years ago. But Eddie never complained, and he dutifully did his work as Deric's assistant. Tavia meanwhile is a successful medical doctor who over the years became very impatient and bad tempered with Deric as she was too disappointed in him. The appearance of an 18 year old Ngoh Mei future leader played by Mandy Chiang complicated the relationship between Tavia and Deric as suddenly Tavia had a competition as this girl, who when she was a little girl was saved by Deric and Deric out of sheer kindness like a big brother to a little girl promised he will marry her and so the girl was here to claim her husband, so to speak. Jealousy became something more serious when Tavia realised she didn't like who she became and decided to call off the relationship and Deric out of anger agreed.

At the meantime, as Hui and his son continued to terrorise the town, Deric became very depressed that he was not brave enough to stop them, until he transformed himself into "Yat Chi Mui" (some kind of flower I think), the vigilante hero in the mask at night to right the wrongs he did. He managed to help people and put things right, but he was no match for the eunuch who wanted to marry a male opera singer (Fiona Yuen) who was actually a female disguised as a male. Deric thought Tavia was in love with this opera singer and their relationship worsened as Tavia became very much in awe with the masked hero, thinking at first he was Deric but later convinced he wasn't. Deric didn't want anybody to know as that would mean instant death for him. That in the end culminated in the death of Kenneth and Fiona was accused as the murderer. Even as the masked superhero, Deric could do nothing to set things right.

Eddie at this point became very disillusioned with his poor fortune and blamed it all on God and Deric as he discovered he had an incurable illness and he was dying soon. Because of this he decided he will fight, cheat, lie and deceive to get Tavia and to get powerful. By doing so he revealed the masked superhero's true identity (he knew earlier on) as Deric and set a trap to capture Deric by impersonating as Fiona at the execution site and before that murdered Fiona. Deric didn't believe he was deceived by Eddie and still treated him as a friend. Then Tavia realised she really loved Deric and she had wronged him all these while.

Meanwhile Deric's uncle was somewhere else with a young girl who turned out to be the emperor's long lost illegitimate daughter, but the Emperor thought he had a son. So the girl asked the uncle to pretend to be the son and in doing so convinced the eunuch who knew the uncle wasn't the real son of the emperor to let go of Deric and family. He wanted to but the eunuch was deceived by the now manic Eddie and murdered as well. I think somewhere also the uncle and the girl escaped as well.

But at the meantime Deric successfully escaped prison but Eddie was hot on his trail. At this point Deric realised Eddie wanted him dead and in the fight, Deric's father died saving them and they successfully ran away. Meanwhile Tavia overheard Eddie's devious plans and confronted him. Eddie begged Tavia to listen to him but Tavia fell and knocked her head and was in deep coma.

Deric then went into hiding, wishing to run away as far as possible whilst his grandmother became senile. Along his travel he actually met the Emperor on his way to see his "son" and was ambushed by some bandits and saved by Deric. He promised Deric he will give him justice and they travelled back to town and reached there. Eddie didn't recognise the Emperor and was very rude to him and the Emperor could not convince anyone he was the Emperor until Eddie received news the Emperor was on his way to town to see his "son". Deric meanwhile went in search of Tavia and was heart broken to find out she couldn't recognise him as himself or even as the masked hero. In fact she didn't remember him at all and had tried to stab him. He realised Tavia lost her memory and was during those times filled with lies by Eddie. In the end she married Eddie thinking she was meant to be with him and everybody else didn't say anything, thinking Eddie was a good man.

When the Emperor was welcomed by Eddie, he wanted to punish Eddie and Hui, but Eddie instead captured the Emperor and threatened the Emperor to name him as the Prince Regent. The Emperor refused and was imprisoned. It was now up to Deric and gang to save the Emperor.

Meanwhile, Tavia still couldn't remember Deric and refused to believe Eddie was the evil one.

How will it end?

The Ending Revealed
SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Might as well just tell you the ending.

Deric saved the Emperor, and chased after Eddie. When Eddie told him why he did all he did and that he had an illness, Deric let him go and begged the Emperor to let Eddie run free as they were friends. Meanwhile Hui was punished to be a beggar for life. His wife, Eileen Yeow left him. So he became insane. Sammul impregnated Mandy and they're an item. The uncle married the princess.

Tavia was being told by everyone Eddie was a liar and Deric was her one true love. But she confessed to Deric that might be true, but now he heart belonged to Eddie. This is more so when Eddie asked Deric to meet at some secluded spot, said to Deric he was a hypocrite though Deric tried to explain why he let him go and suddenly Tavia appeared and Eddie told Tavia to remember Deric's face as her husband's murdere and he jumped to his death. Tavia was severely traumatised and woke up hating Deric. She ran away. Deric waited for her but she never returned so he went to work for the Emperor and became a good official but decided that life was not for him. So he returned to his old town and continued to become his masked hero. Then he got news that Tavia returned, who previously was pushed and she knocked her head again. When she saw the masked hero flying by with awe in her eyes, Deric thought she remembered him when in actual fact she had forgotten everything, even Eddie and her past and Deric realised he had to woo her all over again.

The series ended with him asking the question whether he minded Tavia was once married to Eddie and his answer was yes but he realised it is better to gain back the woman he loved and forget about the past. So he promised himself he will woo her again as the masked hero and protect the town.

THE END.

Comments
I read in some reviews and in some forums that this series was a failure in every sense. I can see why. It boasts 2 very famous actors who can act very well but somehow it failed to capture the heart of the audience, and I guess it may be because the hero in this series, the masked hero was not that likeable as a person. I disliked Lai Chi Kok, finding him a coward in every sense even when faced with injustice. He is not a character you can like, but someone you may be able to identify with. His transformation into the vigilante in the mask is interesting. Because this is one judge, faced with such injustice and given the power is afraid to exercise that power in person and yet when hidden behind a mask, he did those things he never dared to do. He felt liberated and kinda redeemed himself in a way. When this series moved towards that direction, it became watchable but the plot was still seriously lacking.

For one, Eddie as the villain. Understandable he became evil because he was angry. But most of his actions like forcing the Emperor to make him the prince regent, imprisoning the Emperor, they were all illogical actions that will yield no results. The Emperor logically can retract his statement later on and just execute him. His actions made him look like a mad man driven by his anger, his fear, his illness. For someone having so little time and yet wanting it all, this character was clearly selfish and evil, very evil. His moment of evil was when he was in the cave crying and drinking to drown his sorrow, when a young girl saved him when he tried to kill himself. Instead of thanking her, in a moment of anger and madness he strangled her to death. That was when he realised he was on a road of no return; he vowed to get what he wants by any means whatsoever. And that meant betraying everybody, but to what end? There is no sense of purpose for this character, like he started something but there wouldn't be an ending for him. Maybe this is the writer's way of showing how selfish this man could be.

Contrast this to Deric's character. Useless as a judge, braver as a masked vigilante, he at last found his inner conscience and battled injustice but of course at times he was only human; he has fear, he has worries but he pushed them all aside and tried to do the right thing for no reward whatsoever. And yet most of his actions as the masked hero was not voluntary; he didn't go all out to save a person because he wanted to but because he had to, there was no one else to do what he will be doing. He liked being the masked hero, and yet he was very afraid that people might find out and he will be executed as a result. An anti-hero is you ask me and that is why this character is both interesting and yet frustrating to watch.

There must be a contrast between these two extremes of characters, but I can't see it right now because they are both very poorly written and the plot very weak. The entire series except for Eddie the madman, only Hui with Kenneth were the other villains but yet not quite. They were just greedy and mean but not like Eddie who could not be stopped, except for his love for Tavia. 20 episodes and we will see Hui from episode 1 till the last, and it was boring. The series then tried to put in other characters, like the eunuch, Fiona with her pitiful ending but these 2 characters were not interesting to watch at all. In fact it gives me the sense that so many injustice, so many wrongs and oh so boring when it ended with Fiona's death and she was then forgotten.

So the series added some comic relief in the form of the young Mou Dong (Sammul Chan) and Ngoh Mei (Mandy Chiang)students, they were interesting because they were cute, their bickerings and the young girl's fascination with Deric but after a while their characters serve no purpose, just to hang around there and basically just fill up the vacant roles. And their ending with one girl being pregnant before marriage in those times is all wrong. I would expect a Mou Dong student to be more prudent, more careful, more gentlemanly if you get what I mean. I didn't find their ending cute at all.

To tell you the truth, this series has very little plot. It survives on basically on 2 mean characters, one mad villain and some characters that I really don't care. For example, the princess. Sorry to say, she bores me and her story and her love affair with the Uncle was boring to the core. Whenever their story appeared, I felt like it was a waste of time. It didn't help that neither actors had any chemistry with one another.

The only time this series ever surprised me was in 2 occasions;

One the death of the father of Deric. That was very sad. But man, wrong casting decision. The director should have given this role to a better actor and an actor with a more upright and heroic face, because the father is supposed to be such a man. This actor whose name I do not know but a veteran was all wrong.

The other occasion was when the character played by Tavia lost her memory. That was very unexpected as to how her story was going to end. I was thinking perhaps she will remember everything at last, so it was very refreshing and interesting that this series ended with I shall say a cliff hanger. But we all know, Lai Chi Kok will woo and will be successful in gaining her love again, it was just a matter of time. The only set back to this character is Tavia Yeung herself. She is a capable actress, sometimes quite pretty in her own unique way. I can see her effort in making this character different, by giving her a quaint accent when she was speaking her lines. But all these didn't quite make this character and performance as memorable as it should be. I understand her character's frustration but when you have a character that just gets annoyed and bickering with the man she loves all the time, it tends to get very tiring to watch. I don't expect Hindi style singing or smiling happily all the time, but I don't like to see a character being either silly, stupid or plain angry all the time. Tavia's character is basically angry, frustrated, disappointed and unhappy, all the time. The memorable part was the shock value of it, that the idea she married the wrong man, convinced he was the right man, and then forgetting everything and having to start all over again. A very sad character but in the end better for her to forget her awful past and the lies Eddie fed into her brain. I find her ending very good but the performance lacking in the memorable factor. I am not saying she is a bad actress; on the contrary I find her a good actress but I didn't find her exciting as a lead actress. I believe this is her first real lead role where she was in almost every frame and there was a time I simply didn't notice her. She lacked charisma and screen presence. For all that she lacked, I applaud her for trying to make this character her own character by giving her own interpretation. But to me it was pretty ordinary and I wouldn't jump if I missed her performance. I just didn't find her exciting to watch and I realised Maggie Cheung might do better in this role.

That is not to say the performance of the actors were horrible though the plot was lacking.

For one, Deric Wan rules. No question about it, he showed the conflict of his character, his relief, his anxiety, his bravery in a very forced sense. His character is really not a hero, there is nothing to admire about his Lai Chi Kok or even as the masked vigilante. But he did give his character some integrity at last by wanting to do the right thing when it comes to Fiona's character and in a way redeemed himself. I believe this is not Deric's best performance but considering he could still convince me of his conflicting emotions and eventhough his character is not one I would like to say I love to watch, I thought his performance was top notch and pretty classy for such a classless character. Oh yes, Lai Chi Kok is not one character that I can call classy at all. There are so many things to hate about him, petty and everything else but not as bad as Lok Fu of course.

Eddie Kwan aged quite a lot but this man looks better as he grows older. His performance as Lok Fu is something that must be complimented. His character started out as someone who seems to be so happy go lucky, but in actual fact he has a lot of hatred in him that was exposed by his murdering of a young innocent girl. From thereon he became a madman, uncontrollable and very unreasonable. I thought he gave a very manic performance if you know what I mean and I enjoyed his performance very much, although sometimes he kinda overdid his frowning and his pained expressions. But then Lok Fu is one extreme character, so I guess it was justifiable. Glad to see this actor again.

At this point I just want to point out these 2 actors are both so much older than Tavia and yet they looked so good!

Sammul Chan shocked me quite a bit. For one he looked so very charming and good looking in costume drama. I believe I have never seen him in a costume drama before so I didn't know he could look so scholarly and convincing as a kung fu fighter as well. He reminds me of Benny Chan who looks like a "ben-ben" (dumb-dumb) guy in modern dramas but when in costume drama, he can play a scholar, a gentleman. I hope to see him in more costume drama because he was really very good looking. Acting wise, he has improved quite a lot and I am beginning to see what's the fuss about him. I liked it best when he was kinda flirting with Mandy Chiang's character with his wide eyed look and I can see why girls are crazy about him now, not that I am. He's a tad too thin, which is why costume drama suits him, because of the layers of clothes. His character had very little to do. In fact his character had and served no purpose at all except to just appear and gives some contradiction to the useless Lai Chi Kok as the Magistrate but still not very developed as a personality and as a character. I was surprised by his secondary character since he was so heavily promoted by TVB but good to know he did better in secondary character than in lead character or as one of the leads. When you're not so noticeable, if you have it, you tend to stand out. To me this is one of Sammul Chan's better performance and better looking performance as well.

Mandy Chiang looked like a little girl. I do not know who she is but the way she pouts, she reminded me so much of a younger Anne Heung. She really suit Sammul Chan, and that makes Sammul Chan looked young because I have seen him paired with actresses that looked too mature for him. I can't say she is a good actress or even a passable actress. Her performance is totally lacking in everything but like Bernice Liu, I liked her because she was cute. And she has quite a good chemistry with Deric as well, which is good to watch but in the end, however much I like her for being cute, one can't keep being cute for 20 episodes and not act. Acting wise she is stiff and she was stiff from beginning till the end, with very little facial expressions and her speech was rather frustratingly one word at a time and very slow. To tell you the truth, if she wasn't this cute, I would not have been so kind in describing her.

Hui Siu Hung was passable. A veteran actor whose only problem with his performance is the limitations of his character; mean, mean and in the end mean. One track mind and it was boring.

Fiona Yuen gave a very bad performance as the Fa-Dan or opera singer. Everybody kept saying she was such a good opera singer and all and all the time there she was singing, dancing, fighting and she looked totally out of league of the demands of her character. Very bad performance. But pitiful character.

Lok Ying Kwan as usual great. Nothing more to say about this chameleon like actor.

Kenneth Ma was perhaps the worse of the lot. I never liked him, and in this series I really didn't like him. Not just as a character which is despicable, despicable and in the end despicable (one track character-died after being pushed on the floor and fell on some broken porcelein when Hui found him almost raping his own mother, Eileen when he was really drunk) but as an actor, he was absolutely horrible. His performance has zero depth, his smirk was laughable and his body language all out of tune. The way he delivered his lines was passionless and he didn't look too eager in his role. In fact he looked rather frozen most of the time. The worst performance in this series and one actor I never liked in all his performances.

Verdict
Frankly, I was very excited about this series when I heard Deric's name. I am a fan of his, in a way but I never really watched every of his series. This was one with a very interesting plot; a judge who dare not give justice but gave out justice as a masked hero, the irony of it all. But the plot with its lack of colourful characters, single tracked mind characters, unconvincing villains borderline of being silly and some really bad casting and some really horrible performance just didn't make this series worth my time. The only good point is the different and interesting ending, but you will have to endure 19 and a half episodes to get to there and the plot is mostly snail paced. You must have patience, or rather you must be the no. 1 fan of any of the actors in here to finish this series and appreciate its rather intriguing but badly written storyline. The basic of it is good, but the execution is bad. The ending made it all worthwhile but for that alone, I can't sincerely recommend this series because to be really really honest with you, I really loved to like this series, praise it, recommend it but it's just not that good.

Give it a miss.

Split Second [TVB]

Written by Debbie Law

"This series revolved around thirty days in the lives of people who fought for justice, and people who fought for a place in the Underworld. In a way, this may be hard for many of us to identify with as we do not live in a world where death might be upon us any minute, where greed and betrayal would destroy your lives forever and yet, those in Split do and this was portrayed realistically. Split Second: In A Nutshell
Split Second exposes the seedier side of life where men are often trapped in webs of deception and destruction, where men struggle to draw the fine line between the good and the evil, and where men staunchly stand by their own beliefs. Its themes of betrayal, greed, brotherhood, trust, justice and of love are strongly emphasized upon in this series through the lives of the characters.

It is knowing that you are an undercover cop yet after awhile, you lose yourself in the process.

It is going through your whole career in the force, wondering what really got you to the top.

It is the need to lead a normal life but the world changes when you have nobody to lead that life for.

This is one of those series which surpasses them all as it brings reality onto screen for many of us who have never felt what it is like to be one of these men who have no idea as to whether they would live to see tomorrow. Split allows the audience to look through the eyes of each of these men and identify with their various flaws, and at the same time, applaud them for their courage.

Split Second: The Characters
Characterization plays a vital role in every series and Split is no different. The actors have managed to put across the themes of this series and each actor had to reflect the emotional struggle they were going through in those thirty days; of uncertainty, doubt, and integrity, of anger, hatred and of passion. The depth of each character made what was made out to be a mediocre TVB series into a series which was a huge success, in my opinion.

Alex Fong as Fung Chi Wai
Alex Fong, the Actor:
I have not seen Alex in many roles but I have always seen him as the type who played very charismatic and manly roles like in Burning Flame II and yet, I was surprised that he was able to play a man whose life changed the moment his daughter died. Despite the fact that he was one of the most exasperating characters in Split, his performance was very convincing. I must say I found it hard to watch a man who I have always thought of as charismatic degrading himself to Fung Chi Wai’s extent in this series.

On Alex as Fung Chi Wai
As a divorced man and father who spent years in the police force content to be a sergeant, Fung Chi Wai’s life changed the moment he met Pang Wai (Yoyo Mung). In more ways that one, Pang Wai single-handedly cause the downfall of a man who was simply satisfied with the fact that he had a job until he retired, and had a daughter who loved him.

It was Pang Wai who started him on his journey, to avenge his daughter’s death, and to take away the lives of many.

Pang Wai linked him to Hao Mun Wa (Marco Ngai), the leader of the largest triad gang in Hong Kong. It was in loving the same woman, that both men waged war against each other. This put Fung Chi Wai in a suspicious position, and forcing him to fight back, for the woman he loved and the daughter he lost.

I felt that his extreme love for Pang Wai was a consequence of his daughter’s death. He was the man who never really had the chance to be the father he wanted to be and he found his “daughter” again in Pang Wai. Pang Wai was very much dependent on him, and it was her little lost girl story, which led him to sympathize with her and slowly, gave him the need to protect her from the world.

It was his need to live in a world where women were women and men went out to work. He wanted a perfect world, with a home, a family and a wife who loved him. Pang Wai became that woman, and he promised her security, love, family and a husband to depend on with the four rings he gave her when he proposed. He refused to believe that Pang Wai could be dependent of him, and developed delusions that Pang Wai suffered from schizophrenia and desperately needed him. This allowed him the belief that he could be that perfect man, husband and father.

His schizophrenic symptoms very much mirrored that of John Nash’s in A Beautiful Mind and this shows that the scriptwriters managed to research on what schizophrenic patients suffered from. Fong Chi Wai believed that the world was out to get him and Pang Wai and this caused him to strike back, killing people who were his friends, his breakdowns (in front of Hao Mun Wa, etc.) and walking around with a gun, as a representation of his masculinity. His delusions, the policemen running after him in Thailand, him killing Hao Mun Wa because he was going to hurt Pang Wai (and him), were very real to him because of his state of mind and it was what led to his downfall.

Performance Ratings:

Kevin Cheng as Wong Ka Fai (Vincent)
Kevin Cheng, the Actor
Kevin was admittedly one of the more handsome actors in here. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in Split partly because I was biased but because I was glad to see him in another of these meaty roles (like Hard Fate) which did not portray him as one of those men who used his looks to get through life, and two-dimensional roles like in Point of No Return and Not Just A Pretty Face did him no justice. This was one role where he got to play a high ranked officer (like in Burning Flame II) but was actually there for his ability and for his intelligence.

Kevin Cheng as Wong Ka Fai
There is more to Kevin Cheng as Wong Ka Fai than the fact that you can write to Wong Ka Fai at wongkafai@cib.com. One would assume that such a role as the head of Team A in the Criminal Investigation Bureau would require a man of great intelligence, and an amazing leader as well as a role model but that assumption does not fully describe Wong Ka Fai.

There is more to Wong Ka Fai that meets the eye. On the surface, he seems like the lady killer, with Tang Wai Ching, Maggie (Mandy Cho) eyeing him all the time and Law Sao Ling, Vicky (Fiona Yuen) as his ex-girlfriend. He also seemed very cold-blooded, putting his undercover man in danger, pushing people who cared about him away and yet, we see him willing to sacrifice his life with his co-worker, Au Geen Foon, Dick (Chris Lai) during the bomb threat, and we see him asking to be the hostage instead of his co-worker. Yet, one could argue that he did it all because he was on the verge of death but it is his passion for his job and his need to believe in his own ability as a policeman that allowed him to stride with such courage in the last few days of his life.

His relationship with Maggie was very ambiguous right from the start as was his relationship with Vicky but that was pretty much clarified towards the end. The two women clearly loved him but it was Maggie who he finally chose to “spend his last days with” (although not literally). He was very touched by her willingness to sacrifice herself for him but he was very hurt by the fact that he had to “use her” in such a way, in order to stay on the case. I loved the scene where he wiped away the tears from Maggie’s cheeks when he was in prison, silently thanking her for loving him, and his touch telling her of his love for her yet both of them knowing that nothing would come into fruition from it.

Wong Ka Fai chose to live his life to the fullest, and not spend the last few weeks of his life in bed, wondering when he would die. He broke many laws, he fought for what he believed in and he saw through the safety of his undercover cop.

I admired his courage and his will to live on, and his willingness to admit that he managed to get where he got to because of his fellow cops, who stuck with him through thick and thin, and understood the essence of team work. I respected him for being brave enough to choose to die in a place where nobody knew him and was touched by his last call to Maggie, “Maggie, it’s me. I’ve resolved the problems here. I’ll be back to Hong Kong tomorrow and I want you to come get me at the airport. I’ll see you tomorrow.” And his relieved, and content smile, before drifting off into a world where he knows he will find peace was equally touching.

Performance Rating:

Patrick Tam as Yeung Kai Dong (Ah Dong)
Patrick Tam, the Actor
This is by far, Patrick’s best role in a TV series. I enjoyed his performance in Seed of Hope, and hated his character in Eighteen Springs but was impressed by the comedic Mo Den Keung in Angels of Mission but his shone beyond expectations as Ah Dong. His dilemma as an undercover cop, his doubt as to whether he is essentially good or bad and his funny moments in Split contributes greatly to the success of this series. I am horrified that he was not nominated for any awards in 2004, nor was Split.

Patrick Tam as Ah Dong
One of my favorite roles in Split (other than Wong Ka Fai but I’m very biased). Anyhow, Ah Dong here plays an undercover cop who has spent seven years or so by Hao Mun Wa’s side and had been frequently feeding Lok Yiu Kwok (Moses Chan) with information in relation to the triad’s activities. However, when Lok Sir died, Dong was left a loner, without an authorized person to report to. This led to his questioning as to whether he was still a cop, or had he turned into one of them. However, Wong Ka Fai sought him out, and decided that Dong shall be under his care.

It is amazing how Dong and his “big brother”, Gum Yu Loi, Mao Gor (Johnson Lee) manage to forge such a strong bond of brotherhood during Dong’s period as an undercover and after he was exposed. Their bond led me to realize that friendship forged in the most peculiar situations would be those that lasted forever. It was obvious the amount of respect they held for each other despite the fact that one was of them was “black” and one of them “white” (referring to their status in society). I saw Dong’s anguish when he had to face Mao Gor knowing that he had already been exposed, he had betrayed their friendship in order to fight for justice but it took a lot of guts for him to face his “big brother” again because of the respect he had for him. I felt Dong’s struggle to come to terms with the fact that Mao Gor had willingly traded his life for his time and time again, and for the last time, he had died saving Dong’s life once again.

I related Dong’s character to Hung Mo (Moses Chan) in War and Beauty partly due to the fact that he had two women deeply in love with him, one of them high-ranking, high-powered - Rita (Sririta Jensen), the other one the mother of his daughter, Wing (Claire Yiu). He was torn into two when he realized he could only choose one of them, and it was a tough decision to make. I respected him for only making his choice only when he felt it was safe to, because he did not want both of them to be waiting for him, unsure as to whether or not he would come back alive.

One of Dong’s best scenes was when he found out his daughter, Yiu Yiu had died. He had left Yiu Yiu in the car, with the engine running and the window rolled down. Unfortunately, Yiu Yiu decided to roll up the window, which put her in a life and death situation. Due to the fact that Dong had to be with Hao Mun Wa at that point in time, he lost his only daughter, not knowing that she was actually his daughter. This was the one thing that led him to drugs, to refusing to believe that there was any hope in working undercover. The tragedy was the knowledge that your daughter had died and she never had the chance to call you “daddy”, and neither did he have the chance to hear it.

It was his internal struggle which made his character so realistic. Many of us can relate to that “internal struggle” in a point in our lives. It may not have been the struggle an undercover cop goes through but the sort that was life-changing. Dong’s life changed the moment he decided to go undercover, and his life changed again when Wing told him that Yiu Yiu was his daughter. These life defining moments were delivered with such angst, such enigma, and confidence.

Performance Rating:

Marco Ngai as Hao Mun Wa
Marco Ngai, the Actor
Now, Marco delivered here - to perfection. I enjoyed every single one of his scenes because he was such a convincing actor. I believed that he was bad and yet he also managed to show a different side of him, which I thought was awfully touching. Marco has indeed molded himself into the role of the villain yet it he managed to pull off this role with me disliking his actions yet liking him at the same time.

Marco Ngai as Hao Mun Wa
Hao Mun Wa is one intricate character. Yes, he is the villain yet I do not look at him with as much contempt as I do when I see Pang Wai. I feel the need to defend Hao Mun Wa here because he was what he is as a consequence of his father’s actions. This was one man who grew up with a shortage of love in his household. He continually lived in uncertainty as a child because his mother was killed when he was young and his father left him and his brothers in an orphanage before fleeing to Thailand.

This left him with the responsibility of caring for his younger brothers, Hao Mun Wui (Wong Duk Bun) and Hao Mun Ying (Lok Tat Wa) at very tender age so he turned to what he had seen his father do - violence. He hid behind violence, throughout his years at the orphanage in order to protect himself, and keep himself secure as well as making sure his brothers do not suffer from the bullying of others. What was particularly interesting was the fact that he beat up a child who was bullying Lok Yiu Kwok (Moses Chan) who became his best friend and later, a policeman. He felt the need protect Lok Yiu Kwok and yet as adults, kinship took precedence over his friendship with Lok Yiu Kwok when he felt that his father, Cheng Kuan was being threatened by the police force’s investigation.

I assume that this was what led him to being one of the most notorious triad gang leaders in Hong Kong. He did what he had to do in order to survive, first, by living up to his father’s expectations and second, in order to provide a sense of security for him and his brothers. And then, he met Pang Wai who, like Fung Chi Wai, he felt a great need to protect. Her past struck a chord with him, and he fell in love with her, knowing that she could continually be dependent on him. Yet, she fell in love with Fung Chi Wai, and depended on him instead, leaving Hao Mun Wa no choice, but to fight back for the woman he loved.

I was never doubtful as to whether Hao Mun Wa really loved Pang Wai. He continually caused havoc in the lives of Fung Chi Wai and his daughter, in order to hurt Pang Wai indirectly and yet he never laid a hand on her. Neither has he emotionally abused her in any way. He may have tried to hurt her, hoping (for awhile) that she might return to his side but I was glad that at the end, he proved me right.

Yoyo Mung as Pang Wai
Yoyo Mung, the Actress
Yoyo was very, very convincing indeed as the selfish, self-centered woman who desperately wanted to live in a real world where only she and Fung Chi Wai existed in.

Yoyo Mung as Pang Wai
Pang Wai had a desperate need to see the world through rose-tinted glasses and she chose to. She chose to tag around behind Fung Chi Wai, with the knowledge that it would put his life, career and family in jeopardy. She chose to chase after Fung Chi Wai who went to Thailand, with the need to avoid Pang Wai and avenge his daughter’s death and yet she followed him all the way there. For a woman who caused him his career, and his daughter, she sure had a lot of courage to stay on with him.

Personally, I thought she was the stupidest character I have come across in the longest time and yet, she is a master at pulling the strings of her puppet - Fung Chi Wai. She manipulated him to the extent that he developed schizophrenia as a result of her need to cling to him. Her clingy-self made Fung Chi Wai feel needed, and gave him the strength he needed to avenge his daughter’s death.

Performance Rating:

Split Second: Supporting Cast
I thoroughly enjoyed the supporting cast in Split. Each one of them managed to make the character their own and together, they managed to hold this series together.

A special mention must be given to the Thai actors, Sririta Jensen and Chatchai Plengpanich who played both Rita and Sam respectively. Although I liked Rita, as a character, I enjoyed Sam’s performance more. His character gave him a chance to display an array of emotions; from his confidence as an undercover cop to his anguish knowing that he would have to betray the father he had come to respect and love.

In addition to them, Johnson Lee’s performance as Mao Gor was also a highlight of Split. He soon shed his tough and brash surface and brought to life his softer side. Throughout the series, he continually fought for Dong’s life and protected him because he was his “little brother.” I was touched by his last scene, where he brought Dong back for Wing, before settling himself down into the rocking chair and quietly left the world himself, satisfied. One would be surprised at the tears welling in his eyes whenever he holds a shouting match with Dong.

Lau Gong, who played Cheng Kwan also deserves a standing ovation. Credit must be given to his amazing ability to bring his character to another level. Despite being the villain, I still sympathized with him, and felt his guilt and regret over his wife’s death, and slowly his sons’.

As it was Mandy Cho’s (Maggie) first time on screen, she was stiff most of the time, and sounded monotonous at times. She did get better as the series progressed so I’m assuming Split was shot in sequence as much as possible. My favourite scene of her was with Wong Ka Fai when he was in jail (as I have mentioned above). Fiona Yuen (Vicky) has just about as much screen time as Mandy did but she was definitely far from stiff and quite likeable although she did keep me guessing as to whether she really loved Wong Ka Fai or not.

Reviewers Note
I felt that Split Second has been much underrated due to the fact that it aired right after the success of War and Beauty. However, I felt that Split is very much the modern version of War but told from a man’s perspective. Its themes parallel War’s, but in a context that more of us can identify with.

I know many have complained about the fact that it was illogical as to so much could have been done in thirty days and yet, I thought that was one of its most logical parts of the plot. So much happens around the world in a couple of seconds, a birth into the world, a death, an accident, a friend made. This series revolved around thirty days in the lives of people who fought for justice, and people who fought for a place in the Underworld. In a way, this may be hard for many of us to identify with as we do not live in a world where death might be upon us any minute, where greed and betrayal would destroy your lives forever and yet, those in Split do and this was portrayed realistically. It is what happens in those wee hours of the mornings that never makes it into the news, it is how much some people strive for what they believe is right and it is wanting a prove to yourself that you are one of the best there is.

Characters
Katie Wilkinson: she is a senior editor at a publishing house in New York that specializes in literary novels and poetry. This is also where she first met Matt. She originally came from North Carolina where her parents still lived and with whom she still has a very close relationship. She is a fighter who always had the courage to do what she had to do.

Matthew Harrison: he is a house painter in Martha’s Vineyard and in his spare time he writes poems. His father, a doctor, died when he was only eight years old. He was hurt badly by his sudden death as he never had the chance to say goodbye to him. From then on, he’s terrified he might lose someone he loved.

Suzanne Bedford: she was a physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. At 35, she had a heart attack. While she was recovering from it, she had time to think for the first time about her life. Her boyfriend dumped her not long after her attack. That’s when she decided to leave Boston behind her and start afresh as a country doctor in Martha’s Vineyard where she had spent her summers with her grandparents.

Summary
Katie Wilkinson found herself to be in seventh heaven when she was together with Matthew (Matt) Harrison. To her, their relationship was perfect. He was a good listener and thoughtful. They had the same interests and he made her feel at peace with herself. Basically, Matthew Harrison was The One for Katie Wilkinson.

After eleven blissful, glorious months though, Matt had ended their relationship, offering no reason whatsoever. Katie was devastated and had never been so hurt in her life for she had lost the only man she had ever loved.

The next day, she found a package at her front door. Great was her surprise when she recognized Matt’s handwriting on it. Inside, there was only a small diary with a note on the first page from Matt. He asked her to read the diary because it will explain why he had to break up with her. The diary is about his wife and son, and him… On the front cover, there’s written Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas.

She knew Matt had a wife called Suzanne, yet he had sworn that they weren’t together anymore. And that was it. That was all she knew about Matt’s past. As open as she is about hers, so closed is he about his past. This was the only thing they had arguments about. Soon, Katie discovered that Nicholas was actually Suzanne’s and Matt’s son. This came as a huge shock to Katie for the day that Matt had left her; she planned to tell him that they were expecting a child together.

The diary was written by a new mother as a memory for her baby son in whom she confided all her secrets. She told him how she met is father, how their romance developed into a fairy marriage that was blessed with a baby. Of course, she has written down everything that has to do with Nicholas. Next to all the wonderful things, she also wrote about her heart disease and the loss of her second baby due to her weak heart. Then the diary ended abruptly with Matt writing the last entries instead of Suzanne.

Finally, Katie learnt the truth about Matt’s past and the burden he’s been carrying with him ever since. Now she fully understood, it’s time to go look for him.

Favourite paragraphs
p. 24 The story of the five balls: Imagine life is a game in which you are juggling five balls. The balls are called work, family, health, friends and integrity. And you’re keeping all of them in the air. But one day, you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls - family, health, friends, and integrity - are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered. And once you truly understand the lesson of the five balls, you will have the beginnings of balance in your life.

p. 109 Diary entry: I hope when you grow up that everything you want comes your way, but especially love. When it’s true, when it’s right, love can give you the kind of joy that you can’t get from any other experience. I have been in love; I am in love, so I speak from any other experience. I have also lived long periods without love in my life, and there is no way to describe the difference between the two.
We is always so much better than I.

p. 129 Diary entry: Matt: Well, I can’t help thinking of this whenever we’re together. I think, isn’t it lucky that Suzanne didn’t die in Boston and we have today to be together. Now we get to watch this sunset. Or isn’t it lucky that Suzanne didn’t die, and we’re sitting out on her front porch playing hearts or watching a stupid Red Sox game. Or listening to Mozart, or even that smarmy love song you like by Savage Garden. I keep thinking, isn’t this day, this moment, incredibly special, because you’re here, Suzanne.

I had started to cry, and that’s when Matt took me into his arms. We cuddled on the beach for a long time and I never wanted him to let me god. Never, ever. We fit together so well. I kept thinking, Isn’t this moment incredibly special? Aren’t I the lucky one?

p. 224 Diary entry: I did a strange thing, then, and I’m not exactly sure why. I knocked on the door, and I knelt on the first step. Maybe I was tired and drained from the long, stressful day. Maybe it was something else, something more important, something I still can’t explain.

Maybe I was remembering the English king who had knelt in the snow hoping not to be excommunicated, and to be forgiven by Pope Gregory.

I had been hurting badly out on the beach, but I also knew I had acted selfishly, I shouldn’t have run away and left you and Matt alone at the house.

‘Forgive me for running off like that,’ I said as Matt opened the screen door. ‘For running away from you. I should have stayed and talked it out.’

‘You know better,’ he whispered and gently stroked my hair. ‘There’s nothing to forgive, Suzanne.’

Matt pulled me to my feet and into his arms. A feeling of relief swept through me. I listened to the strong beating of his heart. I let him snuggle the top of my head with his chin. I let his warmth seep into me.

‘It’s just that I want to keep this baby, Matt. Is that so terrible?’

‘No, Suzanne. That isn’t terrible. It’s losing you that I couldn’t bear. If I lost you, I don’t think I could live. I love you so much. I love you and Nicky.’

Favourite quotes
p. 119: Bad stuff happens. Sometimes it makes no sense at all. Sometimes it’s unfair. Sometimes it just plain sucks.

p. 192: One today is worth two tomorrows

p. 290: The longed-for ships.
Come empty home or founder on the deep.
And eyes first lose their tears and then their sleep.

My opinion
For a long time I’ve been hearing good reviews on James Patterson’s books, but I never seem to come around reading them. Then recently, I found this book in the library and I simply had to take it with me. My expectations were quite high before reading Patterson’s books as my friends kept on telling me how lovely his writing is or how wonderful his stories are. I’m glad to be able to tell you that “Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas” didn’t disappoint me.

This is a love story that has managed to touch my heart. Throughout the story I already knew that something awful will happen and even though I had time to prepare for it, it crushed my heart when I read it.

It is written in a simple and sweet way and I could actually feel the love between Suzanne and Matt. They had this perfect relationship that I think a lot of people will envy them for, they knew they loved each other and that’s what really counted for them. No doubts, no jealousy, no complexity, just happy to be together and to share their life.

And then their blissful life ended abruptly, it felt so wrong and I couldn’t help but feel indignant about it. It was so unfair that that had to happen to them. That fatal day begun so well, preparing the celebrations for Nicholas’ first birthday. Suzanne went into town to get Nicholas’ present and on the way, she had a heart attack. Her car dropped into the water and landed on its side. It wasn’t until two entries further that I found out that Nicholas was in the car as well. My heart immediately went out to Matt. How can one grasp this kind of news? God, I can’t imagine what was going through him when he was told that the two most important people in his life weren’t there anymore.

The short extracts provide for a fast pace, but because of the gentle writing style it doesn’t come over as harsh and abrupt. The plot may sound predictable to some, but some parts have enough suspense to keep you reading and that may surprise you, or not. It did surprise me. Of course you can’t compare this suspense with the kinds in his detective stories. This isn’t a mystery and it’s intention is not to surprise the readers.

Cynics will probably find the characters too sweet, too unbelievable and too perfect. And in a way perhaps they are, but as a romantic girl it presents me with hope. Hope that such people do exist, that the world hasn’t completely turned cold.

What I find to be most interesting is the story of the five balls. It talks about the pressures of modern life. Something that’s very typical for our generation. We all want so much that we are constantly juggling with friends, family and work/school to fit them in our diaries. But do we really stand still and just enjoy it? Probably not, cos we have to rush to our next appointment. Something dramatic always has to happen to open our eye. Luckily this book can also serve as a wake up call.

Verdict
I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those romance lovers. This is one book you must not miss.

Secret Battle Of The Majesty [ATV]

Written by Runechan

"I swear this is his (Kwong Wah) best performance ever."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Production
ATV series, 1994

Episodes
2 parts, 30 episodes each

Cast
Kwong Wah as Prince no. 4, Yung Cheng
Erica Choi as Miu Yan (Miu Fei)
Annie man as Princess Kong hui
Yan Chi Keung as Prince no. 14, prince no. 4’s blood brother
Kent Tong as the monk, Man Kit

I don’t know most of ATV actors/actresses’ name so this is the best I can do

The storyline
Set in the Ching dynasty, during Hong Hei’s reign for the first part and Yong Zheng’s reign in the second part.

The first part of the story concentrates on the fight among princes to get the throne. Also, the first part portrays the transition part of prince no. 4 from a good prince to an evil son. The story began with the hunting festival. Prince no.4 refused to give a hunted fox to the crown prince, prince no.2. Because of this, Prince no.2 tricked him to unintentionally rape a Han peasant, Miu Yan. Then prince no. 2sent murderers to kill her and her father (fortunately, Man the monk saved her just in time). The king’s really angry and arrested him for quite sometime under prince no.2’s control. Prince no.4 met Nin Kang Yew, who will be his best friend and most loyal general later on. Nin Kang Yew’s best war strategist and also good at kungfu but Prince no. 2 envied his ability so he didn’t use him properly. So Prince no.4 and Nin became friends at their hard time. Prince no. 2 planned to overthrow Hong Hei but failed desperately as Prince no.4 sent Nin to inform Prince no.14 and prevent this event. Why Prince no. 2 tried to overthrown although he’s the crown prince? Simply because he can’t wait to be the king. Stupid man, isn’t he? Because of this event, prince no.2 is arrested and prince no.14 became Hong hei’s new favorite son, biased father, right? Prince no.4 is only set free. He then tried to look for Miu yan. However, he can find only his son from Miu yan (some villagers tried to kill Miu yan and her son so they separated). He brought his son back to the palace and caused his father really angry (again). Prince no.4 had to leave the palace in exchange with having his son to grow up in the palace. His mother, Tak Fei, suggested him to visit his grandpa, who became the monk after the death of his favorite concubine, at Mt. Ng Tai. He can gain his grandpa’s favorite and got the letter recommending him to get the throne before the death of his grandpa (He used some tricks suggested by his advisor though). Then he went back to the palace and the two monks (Sin and Man) became his followers. (The trip is not smooth though, prince no.8 and co and prince no. 1 tried to assassinate him and steal his letter). However, Hong hei refused to let him be the crown prince but promoted him to the Duke instead. Later, Lung the minister set a dirty plan to blame prince no. 1 that he used the black magic which caused prince no. 2 became crazy and tried to overthrow his father. Hong hei believed this stupid claim so he promoted prince no. 2 to the crown prince again and arrested prince no. 1. Prince no. 4 used Lan Yu Fong to seduce prince no. 2 and poisoned him to become crazy. Hong Hei then decided to give the throne to prince no. 14. Knowing this, Prince no. 4 raped Su Lan (later became the empress) , Lung’s daughter and Prince no. 14 girlfriend to get the assistance from Lung. He also accidentally killed Miu Yan’s father to get his powerful weapon. Prince no. 4 then killed his father and changed the will to get the throne.

The second part revolves around how princes and ministers try to overthrow Yong Zheng’s reign and their ultimate ending. First, Prince no.14 together with no.13, no.8-10 tried to overthrow him using his army and the Duke Yee sin’s army (Annie man’s father). However, Prince no.14 can’t really believe that his own blood brother killed his father so they left the army to Yee sin’s follower and went back to palace to examine Hong hei’s death body. Prince no. 14 found out that his father is murdered and about to kill Yong zheng but failed. In the meantime, Nin can persuade Yee sin’s follower to cheat his boss so they failed to overthrow. Yong zheng decided to set free all of princes except prince no. 14. He was arrested at Hong hei’s funeral. After that, Prince no. 8,9,10 and 13 tried to overthrow again. Thanks to prince no. 1, Yong zheng knew their plan and they failed miserably. Prince no. 13 can escape but other princes were paraded to the street and people lynched them to their death. Then prince no. 14 pretended that he’s sick so Yong zheng released him to Mt. Lu. Prince no. 14 together with Prince no 13, Lung the minister (the empress’s father), Man the monk and some other generals planned to overthrow Yong zheng. Thanks to Miu Yan’s help, Yong zheng can catch them all. Prince no.13 is killed by Sin the monk, Lung, Prince no. 14 and the empress drank the poisoned wine, offered by Yong zheng. However, before her death, the empress told Miu Yan that Yong zheng raped her and such so Miu Fei tried to seek the truth. To uncover this truth, Tai fu is offered poisoned wine as well but he sent the letter telling everything to Miu Yan before his death. Miu Yan then tried to assassinate Yong Zheng but failed. She’s arrested and later harmed seriously by Nin, thinking that she caused the king to ignore his country.Miu Yan was unconscious for a long time. Nin is then offered poisoned wine. Before his death, Yong Zheng promised that he’ll be a good king. 6 years later, Miu yan regained her conscience, she tried to kill Yong Zheng but can’t. Yong Zheng then put her sword to kill himself. Literally, he committed suicide and the end.

Characters
Prince no. 2
He’s the crown prince simply because he’s the most favorite son, born from Hong hei’s beloved empress. He’s evil, ruthless, scum, too arrogant, etc. He murdered, raped, looked down, tried to overthrow his father even he’s the crown prince, yet his father still loved him so dearly. Blind man huh! When he became crazy, I think all viewers are happy. He deserved this ending the most.

On acting wise, I don’t know this actor’s name but he portrayed the ruthless prince quite well. I saw his arrogance in his eyes. He overacted sometimes but overall is ok. He had very limited screen time though.

Rating :

Prince no. 4
He’s a good guy in the beginning, a bit arrogant and hot-tempered but good. See, he’s so sweet to Miu yan first time they met and he felt really guilty when he did rape her. He nearly can’t lie his grandpa to get the throne. But he faced many events and changed to ruthless, unfilial and evil man.

The turning point of his character : Two points I must say, the first one is when he went back from his father’s room, knowing that he’s promoted to the duke, not crown prince even he had his grandpa’s will. At that time, his beloved stepmom is dying, thinking that he’s already been the crown prince. Therefore, he sweared to get the throne no matter how. The second one is when prince no.2 became the crown prince again, he forced prince no. 4 to drink his piss. After that, he became the man who can do everything to get the throne.

Is he evil? Yes, but he is a good king, isn’t he? (at least in this series). Is he the most evil guy in this series? I beg to differ. He might used many dirty plans but other princes used dirty plans (or worse than that) as well. Prince no. 1 and 8 tried to kill him several times. Prince no. 14 pretended to be sick, knowing that his brother will set him free (meaning that prince no.4’s still kind-hearted, right). He might kill many many people but almost all of them tried to kill him first. You don’t expect him to sit and do nothing when others tried to threaten and kill him, right. The hate factor comes from killing his two loyal followers, Tai Fu and Nin Kang Yew though. These two didn’t deserve to die. Is he unfilial? Yes but his parent is really biased. No matter how good he did, compliment and rewards always belongs to other princes. Anyway, his love is real. He really loved Miu yan and his son. This is the positive side and all viewers forgive him in the end.

Kwong Wah as Prince no. 4 aka. Yong Zheng : One word, Excellent!! I swear this is his best performance ever. He can portray good-turn-evil prince really well. His eyes, body language, the way he talked, walked just suit his role really well. One scene where he heard his mother told his blood brother the way to overthrow him. He just stood and his eyes can tell you how sad and angry he is. I think Kwong wah is very good at portraying grey character like this. Unfortunately, he’s never gotten this type of role again from TVB. So this is the peak of his career, I assure.

Rating :

Prince no. 8
The scheming prince who thought that can be the crown prince. He got assistance from prince no. 9 and 10 and some ministers. However, he lost to king’s beloved son, prince no. 2.

On acting wise, this actor portrayed his character quite well. He looked calm, yet cunning which suited his character perfectly huh!.

Rating :

Prince no. 14
Prince no.4’s blood brother. He’s the most kind-hearted prince. He’s a man of dignity but he’s too kind-hearted to be the king. That’s why he lost his girlfriend, throne, and eventually his life to his brother. Some might feel that he didn’t deserve his tragic end but I beg to differ. He should know that his brother is a good king and he should stop when his first attempt to overthrow was unsuccessful. Second attempt is kinda stupid in my opinion, and he didn’t even think about his people. Just want to overthrow and revenge for his father and mom, that’s it. How about his people? They want to live peacefully, right?

Yan Chi Keung as Prince no. 14 : I saw him in Who Is The Winner III before and I think he overacted at that time. Again, in this series I still felt that he overacted sometimes, especially his crying scene.

Rating :

Nin Kang Yew
The most loyal follower of Prince no. 4. Why? Because prince no. 4 gave him a chance to show his ability and then used all of his savings to buy a position for him. After that, he vowed to be loyal to prince no. 4, no matter what. He even killed his own sister to protect Yong Zheng. He always pointed out Yong Zheng’s mistakes and Yong Zheng always listened to his suggestion until Nin harmed his beloved Miu Yan. Nin should know that harming Miu Yan is something more than the King can accept. However, he’s loyal to the king and willing to accept his death.

On acting wise, again I don’t know his name but his righteous look suits his role quite well. His friendship with Kwong wah is the most touching moment in this series, in my opinion. They fought together in their hard time, they encouraged each other. It is so sad when Yong Zheng offered poisoned wine for Nin.

Rating :

Man Kit, the monk
He is the monk but he is not really the monk, confused huh? Well, basically he’s forced to be the monk to protect Hong Hei’s father only. So when he met Miu yan, he had fell in love with her. I think Miu Yan’s never loved him but she wanted to thank him, that’s why she accepted him for some periods of time and finally found out that she only loved Prince no. 4. He is a man with principle and dignity that’s why he helped Prince no. 4 at first and left him when he found out that prince no. 4 became scheming and evil. But you might think that he, in fact, envied prince no. 4 since he had his beloved Miu Yan ha!
At last, he tried to assassinate Yong Zheng but failed and died.

Kent Tong as the monk : This is the second time I saw Kent played a good guy (the first time is DGSD 1982). He is very talented actor. Sadly, he always portrayed evil guys again and again. He looked so compatible with this righteous monk. Unfortunately, he has no chemistry with both Erica Choi and Annie man. Kinda too old for both. Also, I think he gained some weights, right?

Rating :

Miu Yan
She’s only a Han peasant at first. I think she developed some feeling at the first time she met Prince no. 4 but, because he raped her and she misunderstood that he killed her father, she vowed to kill him. Then she knew the truth and accepted him, only to know that this man became evil. Quite sad huh. But she should know that regardless of how he treated others, he really loved her.

Erica Choi as Miu Yan : She overacted a bit at first when she portrayed naïve Miu Yan but she looked much more comfortable as a girl full of vengeance. She is good at crying scene as usual. Overall, I think her acting is good.

Rating :

Princess Gong Hui
I think that her role is quite irrelevant to the series. She loves Man the monk but he never loved her back. Even he accepted her at the end but that’s because he thanked her for many sacrifice she made for him.

Annie Man : She looked compatible with this energetic role as usual. She always gets this kind of role because of her look, I think.

Rating :

"It was at times funny, it was at times interesting, it was at times refreshing but the plot is at all times daring."

Cantonese Title Deciphered
"Fei Seung Goi Fu" which means The Extraordinary Father In Law. And this title is perhaps the most confusing of all aspect of this series because 90% of this series is not about the father in law being a father in law but a husband two timing his loving wife. It should have been "Fei Seung Sei Lou Kung". Those who knows Cantonese may know what I mean.

Plot
Not your typical plot of the day, Ting Kwai Mui is a successful businessman running his uncle's night club and having fun with life. Married over 20 years to a former singer, Fu Yung who became a loving a dutiful wife, he loves his only child, a daughter aged about 20 named Ming Chu very very much. Things started to shake a bit when Kwai Mui decided to become a bit more flirtatious than he should but none of his affairs were ever serious, until he met an independent and a very principled young Chinese doctor named Hung Min who from his most detested person became the other woman in his life.Hung Min did not complain being the other woman, Fu Yung never suspected and treated Hung Min like her little sister. Meanwhile, Kwai Mui's only daughter, Ming Chu fell hard for a trickster who wanted to marry her and run away with her money on her wedding day but Wai Lei realised there were more than just fash cash as Kwai Mui controlled the night club business thanks to his uncle who had 4 wives but no sons to pass the business to. So Wai Lei decided to stick around pretending to be the loving husband that he was but Kwai Mui soon found out about Wai Lei's true self when Wai Lei's ex-wife showed up demanding a reconciliation when he ran out of her before. Instead of exposing the cheat that he was, Kwai Mui played along with Wai Lei's game as Wai Lei knew about Hung Min and threatened Kwai Mui he will expose the other woman to Fu Yung. As Kwai Mui thread very carefully on cheating on his wife, mainting a blissful relationship with his mistress and watching his daughter being potentially cheated off not just her body but of her heart, things fell apart when Fu Yung found out about the whole matter. Fu Yung kicked Kwai Mui out thinking having some hardship will make him run back to her but Hung Min took him in with open arms, determined to keep her man though she didn't mind sharing with the wife. At the meantime, Wai Lei plotted to get rid of Kwai Mui by using the shameful threesome matter and in the end, Kwai Mui was cast out of the Ting family and Wai Lei took over the business. Fu Yung could not bring herself to forgive Kwai Mui and when Wai Lei further damaged Kwai Mui's reputation by setting him up with another woman (Victoria Jolly). Now abandoned by both his wife and mistress with no money and no family to turn to, not even his daughter, Kwai Mui suffered a great deal until he was rescued by one of his former girlfriends, Lisa who retired from the night club scene and was living in with Kwai Mui's brother in law, a decent hard working man, Kei. Kei did not want to believe Kwai Mui but in the end believed him when he found out how Wai Lei was taking over the business. As Kwai Mui plotted to regain back his wife, mistress and his business and to topple Wai Lei, Wai Lei himself was having a change of heart when he realised he was indeed in love with Ming Chu. By that time Fu Yung already knew Wai Lei's true nature and gave him an ultimatum; leave Ming Chu at once. He was about to when he found out Ming Chu was pregnant.

Now torn between his need to right the wrong so that he could continue to be with Ming Chu and his accomplices who wanted to gain as much money as possible in any way possible, Wai Lei had to deceive, cheat and lie to save Ming Chu as no one would believe he was a changed man.

Can Kwai Mui enjoy the company of two women? Can Wai Lei redeem himself?

I can guarantee a happy ending but sort of.

Comments
This series, I read was not a success. I can understand why. It was not for the lack of good performances, it was not for the lack of a different type of story, nor it for the lack of star power. Adam Cheng is always entertaining, be it in drama or comedy. This series by the way is comedy. I guess it isn't a success because 3 factors; EEEWW, aiyah and yeah right! I think this series can be summarised into these 3 reactions.

EEEWW
First of all, Adam Cheng still looks great for his age. He aged quite a bit but physically he looks quite the same as many many many years before. Cecilia Yip looks smashing in her do, never in the same qi-pao, she looked stunningly beautiful and very olden day like. Her qi-paos deserve a mention as well for being just too cool. Joyce Tang is gorgeous, maybe too much blusher on her cheeks but she looks gorgeous nevertheless. So where is the EEEWW factor? When you put Adam Cheng AND Joyce Tang together, one old enough to be her father, the other old enough to be his daughter. It didn't feel right. But this is acting, we the viewers can differentiate between real and reel right? For me, not quite. Whenever they start hugging, I started to think old man-young woman, cradle snatcher, grandpa, you know along those lines. To me that's the EEEWW factor no. 1. It's not disgusting, it takes time getting used to but I just can't get past young beautiful youthful gorgeous Joyce and wrinkly, old, father-like Adam. To me that was enough to put me off. But not to discredit their chemistry, after about 19 episodes, you kinda get used to it, since just 1 more episode it was the end.

The EEEWW factor no. 2 is surprisingly (or rather not so surprisingly because I have said the same thing over and over again) is Michelle Ye's performance. She was, how shall I put it? I can't say she was bad, I can't say she didn't try, I can't say she was great, I can't say anything at all except when she is bad, she is really bad, when she is good, she is really good. She just didn't seem like she was trying in here, or even concentrating. Her performance was not there, like you wouldn't even notice, not shattering at all. Towards the end when she started crying when she found out Wai Lei's true nature, that was like quite a revelation for me because there I was, sitting in front of the TV watching her cry and all I could think was ; "Oh my, her head is really bigger than her body?". I KNOW I KNOW, I have succumb to shallowness when writing reviews. I have sworn never to talk about someone's body, or shape of their head, but just review the performances, but I can't help it! I can't! I must but I can't! If one day the size of an actress' head interests you more than what was going on screen, I think I can fairly say something is not quite right with the performance. I could say it was over acting, or rather over eager acting but then I am contradicting myself because I said just a few lines above that she was not trying hard, or not trying at all. When it comes to Michelle Ye, everytime her eyes bulges, her big wide smile starts to form on her big wide head propped on top of her tiny frame, it kinda freaked me out. To me that's EEEWW no. 2.

AIYAH
And when I saw Kenneth Ma on the screen, my immediate reaction was "aiyahhh, why him?". There is no secret, I do not like him. I find him boring, I find him equally as boring as Joe Ma as leading man, I find his acting passable, I don't find him handsome, I find him dispensable, I find him uninteresting and not a leading man material and therefore I find him uncharismatic, I find him simply aiyah! Surprisingly though, he was ok in here, since he had a small role, not tiny but small. His Wai Lei is a good character to portray because he goes through many life changing emotional ermm changes. For one, he started off a a fraud and a trickster. He did all those things never having a conscience, never thought he was wrong, not even when he was in love with Ming Chu. He loved her, but he had no regrets cheating, lying, stealing, etc. But all that changed when he found out he was going to be a father. Suddenly he realised all his life he lacked a family and he wanted one. By that time he was too deep in the cheating, lying, stealing business but he wanted out. He wanted to be with Ming Chu, he wanted to be a good father, a good example to his child. So he'd rather go to jail and earn his keep than run away like a coward. That one moment of change was perhaps Wai Lei's most interesting moment. And from thereon everything he did for that one episode was for the sole purpose of building a future with Ming Chu, whatever the consequences to himself. So to me Wai Lei is a very interesting character. Sometimes Kenneth Ma got it right, his guilt, his tenderness for Ming Chu but not consistently. To me a better actor would be able to carry out that conflict throughout; that no guilty to others but feel guilt to Ming Chu and desperate to hold on to what he had left. All Kenneth Ma managed to do was smirk a bit, smile a bit, smirk some more, and the end. It was a character wasted on this inadequate actor. I must comment though; he has the old style looks, his hair looks cool and cute but for once, I want good acting, I want more than good packaging, I want everything. Kenneth Ma did not achieve that for me and I felt you know, "Aiyahhhh!".

YEAH RIGHT!
And that will be your reacting after watching the ending. The prime and real reason I believe why this series failed was because of this one factor; one man two wives. I am sure many will be shaking their heads when they watch Kwai Mui waking up after 9 months of coma and immediately with Hung Min he went around looking for Fu Yung so that he can get her consent to marry Hung Min as that was the last day in HK for polygamous marriage. And worse still was one minute earlier the wife was saying how happy she was for the new law of one husband, one wife system and then next minute the husband turned up almost half dead saying he wants to marry Hung Min and the wife said "Yes, I agree". How many times a person can slap herself? Apparently Fu Yung could do so many times.

I do not disagree with the ending. I thought Hung Min love and dedication to Kwai Mui was exceptionally touching, where she refused to let him go but never really tried to take him away from Fu Yung. Earlier in the series I was asked what the ending would be? To me it was obvious. Joyce Tang is equally as famous as Cecilia Yip, Adam Cheng more famous, all 3 characters live in a time where polygamous marriage is allowed, Joyce's character is not a devious 3rd party and Cecilia's character is not a heartless wife, Adam's character can't choose between the two, so what would be the ending? What I didn't expect was Kwai Mui not being able to legally marry Hung Min because they were too late but Fu Yung gave her blessing anyway and they had a ceremony recognising Hung Min as the equal to Fu Yung but later one, some years later that is we see Hung Min serving Fu Yung dutifully though Fu Yung told her not to. It was a relationship based on mutual respect and their mutual love for one man. To me it was a good ending but I am sure many will feel insulted with the ending. After all we live in the modern world, monogamy should be the only way and that I agree of course. But in the context of during that time, I don't think there was anything wrong with that part of the plot. But many viewers may not relate to this and may in the end say..."Yeah right! Full of BS!"

What was wrong, and very wrong was when Kwai Mui was blackmailed by Wai Lei and because he was afraid of Fu Yung finding out about Hung Min, he kept Wai Lei's complicated and dirty past as a secret from everybody. And I thought he loved his daughter, I thought he cared whether she was being cheated or not and in this case, obviously so. I find that rather disgusting and you can say this is EEEWW factor no. 3.

The ending is also an EEEWW factor. The last scene was both Fu Yung and Hung Min heavily pregnant. Why must TVB always end a show with pregnancy and despite the fact that Fu Yung is probably in her 40s and if she had wanted another child she would have given birth to a second child years before, why must it be shown that she AND Hung Min together become pregnant? Is there a point to this? To show an illusion of fairness to the character of Fu Yung, like since she had to share her husband with someone else, so rightfully so she must be able to be pregnant when the other woman is pregnant? But that is not the EEEWW factor I am talking about.

I am talking about the very last scene and TVB's recent obsession with guest stars in small roles. Kwai Mui answered the door and there was Sonija Kwok playing the maid asking for a job and Kwai Mui immediately feel lust in himself as Sonija the maid talked rather coyly and the wives chased after him, beating him for daring to look at another woman. The EEEWW factor was Sonija Kwok. Even a 1 minute appearance, she couldn't even do it right. Her acting for that 1 minute was beyond horrible and her presence totally ruined the entire ending which was already quite ruined anyway.

The only saving grace, in terms of plot is the relationship between Lisa and Kei. Lisa used to be very materialistic, but over time she fell for a man poor in money but rich in character and integrity. I quite like that, especially their ending where they struck lottery big time and some years later, Lisa appeared over dressed and rather large!

Other than that, I would say the themesong was another saving grace.

The Unexplored Plot
There is potentially one actually. Where Hung Min has a few disciples and when her father's clinic was ruined and her reputation destroyed by her affair with Kwai Mui, I was quite surprised that no one ever said her behaviour was a disgrace to her dead father's memory. I certainly would say it that way even if I know she's really a nice girl actually. Wouldn't you?

Performances Evaluated
I have said what I have said of Michelle Ye and Kenneth Ma and I stand by them.

Adam Cheng
A great actor who excels in both drama and comedy. He is funny to watch and he brings life to his character, however much I may dislike Ting Kwai Mui at some point. But pairing him with Joyce Tang is pushing it a bit too far.

Cecilia Yip
She was to me Michelle Ye in her younger days. She was the opera-ish type of actress, often over acts, over emotional, over the top. But in recent years she toned down a bit and when given the right role, she can do it well. I find her Fu Yung very well acted, and she deliberately gave Fu Yung a very quaint and old style accent and manner of speaking, I find her performance very watcheable and very interesting. At least someone daring to be different.

Joyce Tang
A capable actress who tends to succumb to being a spoilt princess persona. Let me explain. She may play a strong character, but when she starts crying, she reminds me of this very girly girl, like a spoilt princess that a man would rush to please, however strong her character may be. That I find irritating sometimes because of her high pitched girly cries and all.

Angela Tong
A good and funny performance. I like her Lisa, something to distract me from that Joyce-Adam pairing.

Wayne Lai
A very good performance of a character that really isn't that important in this story. I mean his scenes can be deleted and no one would miss it because his character isn't that important, except for that final few episodes. Nevertheless a good performance.

Lai Suen
Excellent performance by this veteran who didn't mind donning such an ugly wig and wearing far too much make up, which was deliberate.

Mark Kwok
Good performance as the devious right hand man of Wai Lei with an agenda of his own. I am sure he is a decent fellow in real life but this man is really being typecast as either boyfriend from hell or a villain.

Verdict
It was at times funny, it was at times interesting, it was at times refreshing but the plot is at all times daring. Cast aside your prejudices or distaste for the subject matter of this series, and I do think you might enjoy this light hearted series. If light hearted series is not your cup of tea and you really agree with my EEEWW, AIYAH and YEAH RIGHT! points, do give this a miss. Only a select few will actually like this series, though I must say, it was an enjoyable series that I didn't quite like for reasons as explained.
