TRIUMPH IN THE SKIES [TVB]

Written by Funn Lim

"Like I said above, I had to adjust my rating for this series from 4 and a half stars to this present one because this series felt like it was never going to end, it was increasingly repetetive, the plot unimaginative and the entire premise so been there done that. Saving grace is Francis Ng. So don't miss this one for the sake of Francis."

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Title Deciphered
"Chung Seung Wan Siu" which basically means rushing or shooting or flying or aiming for the skies. Triumph in the Skies is quite an interesting title though there aren't any triumph of such sort in this series in the skies. I mean this is not a disaster series. But the English title's acronym is TITS. Very very very funny.

Summary
A series about the ups and downs of people with glamarous jobs like pilots, air stewardess and the ground crews of Chep Lap Kok airport.

Plot
I have written Episodic Thoughts for each episode, summarising the plots and my opinions as well. Do have a read. I must warn you though; they're filled with spoilers. Basically you will know the beginning, the middle and the end. As for this review, I will reveal one big spoiler here since my discussions will centre around this one character at some point; Vincent, played by Joe Ma will die somewhere mid of this series. There! Said it!

Comments
I must confess; I really wanted to give this series a rating of 4 and a half stars at first when I was writing my Episodic Thoughts, but the problem with writing Episodic Thoughts is as you go along comenting on everything you kinda realise you noticed too much of this series. So with the weaknesses of this series still fresh in my mind, I could not give it that high a rating because this series has major problems.

Performance wise, I will stress this series boasts some fine acting by a select few but enough to get you hooked earlier on. That is the beauty of this series. It looks expensive, since there are planes, you see the filming at the real airport itself as mention in the TMO of this series, you see some very stylish costumes, expensive locations such as Rome, Adelaide and Japan. You see beautiful sceneries, you see lots of westerners whom I suspect are real pilots and many many more. All these when put together does create a very glamour-ish backdrop for a series and therefore very interesting. I promise you, you will be hooked earlier on, more so if you love Flora Chan because the earlier parts were mostly about her. The most interesting part may to some be the training sessions of the young pilots at the Adelaide cadet training school, but to me it is the relationships. All went well earlier on, the series picked up pace as the characters went through many life changing decisions but sometimes slumped back down with some repeats but basically it was bearable. But somewhere, some time, this series went very very wrong and to me crashed to the ground. It survived the crash but basically the series suffered heavy injuries, so to speak. Let me elaborate.

The problems are basically this;

1. plot
2. pacing
3. performance

Whilst I woould like to stress the performance are generally good, there are one or two who gave average performance in a role that requires more than that. Let's go one by one.

The Plot
It's one dimensional. It may be about pilots, but any profession can be used for this series since it is more about love and relationships. The most tiring thing about this series is its repetitions. We know Sam and Belle fell in love right from the beginning but parted ways on very bad terms. Then Belle met Vincent and Vincent turned out to be Sam'e very best friend. Vincent then found out about Belle and Sam's very short but very emotionally linked affair decided to let Belle choose. Sam couldn't take Belle away from Vincent as he is the more subdue, calm, quiet one whilst Vincent is the loud, flamboyant, flirtatious one who somehow fell in love with Belle, the hopeless romantic. Some events led to Belle agreeing to marry Vincent, and even after marriage, Belle had this thinking that perhaps Sam was the one. When Vincent realised how close they were and Sam was having some great success like becoming a captain, we see jealousy, we see anger. But when Vincent was ok with it, it was Belle's turn to be uncertain and we see Vincent leaving Belle. And when Belle was still coming to terms with her feelings with Vincent, we see Vincent dying. Then Belle became too much in grief whilst it was Sam's turn to be uncertain thought he was seeing Zoe, a girl 15 years his junior. Uncertainty after uncertainty, Belle finally realised she loved Vincent and Sam realised he loved Zoe and then we have one tragedy after another. It went on and on and on. Of course there are other characters whose story was worse than this; like the unbelievable love story between Donald, Zita and Isaac. But to be fair, this part of the story never had a chance to develop much because 90% of this series was centred on Belle, Sam, Vincent and Zoe, or more accurately, 60% Belle, Sam, Vincent and 30% Sam, Zoe and Zoe's heart disease. It became increasingly repetetive and boring whilst once every while we are reminded hey! There's Donald, Tina and everybody else. Because of this overwhelming one plot, others got neglected, seriously neglected and for them, what I could see was half cooked plot which was unreal, inconsistent and corny.

Vincent's death was also meant to be a shocker but I knew earlier on he will die because I read it in a review he will die. If you didn't read any reviews, sure, it will shock you. More on this in the character analysis below.

And sometimes we have some cute scenes like Sam and Zoe trying to work things out with their generation gap. First cute scene, very cute, very funny. But again and again and again, it kinda felt old. I felt like I was having episodic gap you know, the whole generation gap problem was so yesterday when Zoe and Sam were at it again and again.

The one plot which I really love to watch is the growing respect and understanding between Sam and Isaac who was first Sam's uncle but turned out to be his little brother. However the plot of how his mother left his father was ridiculous, illogical.

Then there is the missing persons plot as in missing persons in a plot. At most time you expect certain people to appear at times of crisis but they never appear like Zoe's family when she was really sick, Ruby when Belle was commiting suicide whilst often we see sudden plots like Coco falling for Chris and as sudden as they started, they also parted ways as suddenly. I don't like such sudden plots, it either means bad writing or bad editing and neither is good.

Pacing
And due to the repetetive plot, we have a problem with the pacing. This series could have just ended with 30 episodes, nicely in fact. But dragged on and on to reach number 40, and in the end the entire series felt like one never ending soap opera. Whatever novelty and charm it had in the beginning, by episode 25 or so, it felt much too long for me. And also due to this pacing problem, we will be reminded again and again of Belle's uncertainty, then Sam's uncertainty and finally Zoe's sickness being detailed one episode by one episode. I realised, the longer it takes for one main character to die in a TVB series, that character will never die. The one that will die is the one like Vincent. He had to die. Because right before his death, this series was already going downhill with the constant uncertainty of Belle. It was getting nowhere, and it was only about half way through. Something must happen to make something else happen and since Vincent is like the best friend character and little else to do, logically he had to go. At this point I was actually thinking this was a ploy to get Belle and Sam together again. And I suspect it was so until someone must have thought there was Zoe. And also to add some drama of course.

Performance
SAM TONG
The Character
I love this character from the word GO. He was just an ordinary guy, of course he was the best pilot and all. But he was pretty boring, he had very few friends, no girlfriends, he dress older than his age and he has the most ridiculous hairstyle. The only thing that may make him interesting in the eyes of other girls is the fact that he is best friends with Vincent, the more popular, flamboyant, handsome one. Those you expect pilots to be.

But two women fell for him. Belle fell for him because he was there at all the right times and Zoe fell for him because she could feel safe with him.

Sam gives me an impression that he is stable, calm, totally unshakeable. And yet at times he displayed anger, like the way he felt for Isaac earlier on and as this series ended, we see a more desperate and hopeless Sam. Sure he was confident and cool and all, but when faced with the fact of losing his best friend and then the idea of the woman he loved may die as well, he broke down, emotionally. We see a very exposed Sam. In the beginning he was closed emotionally, so it was very interesting to see so many bad things thrown at him from friends dying to eyesight affected by one unfortunate accident to fearing, angry, sadness... basically we see a very interesting progression of digression of this character. This entire series without a strong writing of one single main character would certainly fail, so luckily the characterisation of Sam is gripping and borderline obsessive. I was hooked because of Sam. And yet the writing also flatered somewhere in the middle when Sam again and again doubted his love for Zoe, again and again wondered if he still loved Belle.. he became very Belle-ish which was bad news. I was losing my patience with him but in retrospect, I would say even with such bad writing in the middle, this character is still gripping and interesting.

And you may ask what is so interesting about such a boring man? Easy. He looked like he was emotionally closed,so often you wonder what was going on through his mind. Like Zoe, we get to discover him one step at a time, so at some point you kinda feel a certain connection with this character. This is more so very important when he is the lead here, the entire plot almost revolved around him and if you don't care or even find him interesting, you might as well switch off the TV.

The Actor : Francis Ng
And one reason why Sam is such an interesting character is because there is one very excellent actor play him. Often interesting characters become unbearably monotone because of one bad actor or one very uneventful character becoming very layered and multi-faceted because of one very good actor. Francis Ng is not my idea of a typical heart throb or leading man. In fact he looked like a psycho with his piercing eyes and lazy drawl way of talking. He looks pretty boring in real life. And yet amazingly when this man act, he can be so engrossing. His face fills up the entire TV, you kinda forgot there may be someone next to him. He gave Sam his very own interpretation, a quiet, emotionally closed but strong willed and opinionated character. His Sam felt like my dream husband, dependable, loyal, trustworthy and devoid of any ill feelings like jealousy though he can succumb to anger sometimes. All these layers were given by Francis and it was such a joy to peel the layers of this character to finally see him open up and smiling happily. You may think his Sam is a block of wood without much expressions, but Francis let his eyes do the talking. If there is an Emmy for this, I would hope Francis wins best actor because his acting surpasses my expectation. It was Francis who made Sam interesting, it was Francis who gave Sam such beautiful interpretation, such flawless performance. The only problem is the writing sometimes but Francis completed this series with his reputation as a character actor and a very attractive man intact. Not even his bad English could kill my enthusiasm for his Sam though I laughed about it because seriously, his English actually improved towards the end. And he looked pretty dashing in the pilot's costume. He gives Sam a very strong, steady and very sexual as in sexy personality. I can forgive him for the horrid kiss with Flora Chan because he later had some very intimate kisses with Myolie which I loved. Flawless performance.

Best Moment
When Vincent died, Sam was alone in his room and his calm demanour melted and he cried and cried and cried alone. Also Francis Ng's best acting moment, amongst others. But I would say this was the most memorable as I cried along with him as he expressed his grief all alone. Vincent's death was really badly written by his friend's grief was flawless acted by Francis. Another crying scene which I will state somewhere below is my vote for the Best of the Best Moment. More on that later.

Worst Moment
His indecision about Belle and Zoe. Very repetetive and so un-Sam-like. Sam to me is pretty decisive person, not like this "I don't know" guy.

VINCENT LING
The Character
This is actually a very well written character. The way he dealt with the Belle-Sam indecision, his jealousy, eventually his acceptance that he wanted a second chance with Belle...these are all very strongly worded characterisation. The problem is of course not the character, or maybe is. I was pretty appalled by the writing sometimes when it comes to this character's action. More later.

The Actor : Joe Ma
He gave an average performance, which is my way of saying another better actor would have matched Francis Ng's performance. I was thinking who could play this dashing pilot? Ok Joe Ma is good looking but ..I have repeated this often and I must stress it here, he is boring to watch. It didn't help that he approached this character like some standard text book acting, nothing new, nothing different when this character is potentially a very good character to play. There are no villains in here, but at some point Vincent came close to being one with his jelousy towards Sam. But these are all real; you can be best friends but you just can't share wives you know. There was this particular scene where you know Vincent knew he couldn't compare with Sam but he upped Sam in one area; he married Belle, the one Sam also wanted. We all know Sam would have won if he just say to Belle "let's run away" and Sam didn't but Vincent was blinded with anger and mostly fear of losing Belle. All these makes for very interesting acting possiblities but Joe Ma, he just didn't give it more. I expected more, I expected more expressive eyes but all the time he looked worried. Who can play this character and give it such layers that you might feel more for Vincent? I was thinking an actor of Roger Kwok's calibre but someone taller.

Best Moment
When he died, which was the worst writing moment but best moment for me because I didn't have to see Joe Ma anymore. But then he appeared once every while thereafter as Belle's imaginative husband so to speak but he was ok there. And thus I can only come to this one conclusion; he is great and watchable as a secondary actor with limited screen time, anything more than that he bores me. Maybe he hasn't found his character yet. I must say though he has very good chemistry with Flora Chan as they make very believable couple though I enjoyed more his Vincent's relationship with his spoilt sister Coco.

Worst Moment
When he threw Sam's cake to the floor in a drunken stupor because he was jealous Sam was made Captain first and yet the very next day, he pretended nothing happened. Or I should say the writer forgot to follow up on that. It was so un-Vincent-like. There is one moment that has my vote for Worst of the Worst Moment, take a guess which one it is? If you read my Episodic Thoughts, you will know.

ISABELLE LOK AKA BELLE
The Character
I hated this character from the word GO because of her constant beliefs in fate, karma and all and the way she told Vincent "I don't know" when Vincent asked her whether she loved him or Sam. I hated her indecision, I hated the frequent scenes of her dropping her bloody bracelet in one single episode and I hated that kissing scene between Belle and Sam. I hated everything about her. I also hated the fact that her character's sudden actions, like one minute she was crying about Vincent, the next she still didn't know if she loved Vincent or Sam. It was draggy and I was really really losing my patience. But after Vincent died and towards the end when she went very deep into her depression and she tried to commit suicide due to her grief and regret. That was when Belle became interesting but as slow as we reached this stage, her happy ending was much too fast. Belle is a character that is quite badly written because of the inconsistencies.

The Actress : Flora Chan
The inconsistencies could be due to her very patchy acting. Sometimes average, sometimes monotomous, sometimes unbearably bad, sometimes effectively good. Like Belle's emotions, Flora's performance can be very wide ranging, as in the quality. She never had one point where she convinced me she is beyond average. She reminds me of Joe Ma but with loads more of charisma. A better actress would give this character such a beautiful interpretation because Belle would face so much problems and having to make difficult decisions and going through a emotional roller coaster. Sometimes Flora gave her an one dimentional intepretation which was my way of saying she sucked. But the scenes where she had to share scenes with Francis Ng were really her more better acting moments and her best acting moment was in the Best of the Best Moment. Her chemistry with Joe Ma is very believable and they looked like a couple. However Flora just doesn't have that whimsical looks of a hopeless romantic. I was saying Charmaine Sheh will do well because

a. she cries beautifully
b. she has this quality of making men crazy about her
c. she can be a hopeless romantic if she stops acting in a very big movement, shouting manner, her older series gave us a very elegant and soft Charmaine Sheh
d. she kisses beautifully

But she may look younger than Flora Chan though nowadays she is much too skinny, less attractive but she has those dreamy quality. Many other actresses can do well actually but Flora was the choice in a character that I can never imagine her to be in and she to me did an average job.

Best Moment
When she scolded Vincent and said how disappointed she was at how Vincent treated Sam. I thought that was a very strong Belle.

Worst Moment
Apart from her "I don't know" scenes and that kissing scene, I would say whenever she cries she mumbles. And when she mumbles I can't understand a single word she is saying and when I can't understand, I tune off in my mind and when I tune off, this is why I said her performance was average at best. At these worst moments (and quite a few), she was truly a very bad actress. She can act, but what's the point of knowing how to act when I can't understand a single word she is saying? It's not like this is a foreign languaged series.

ZOE
The Character
I loved this character from the word GO but as the series went on and on and on, her character was pretty one dimensional and overly too perky for me. Call me old, call me cynical, there was a time I couldn't stand her constant smile, her optimism as she was dying and her role of saying encouraging words to those worries about her, episode after episode after episode. It's the writer's fault and in the end I kinda realised Zoe had very little to do in this series except to be perky. Of course that is an unfair statement as her perkiness is meant to open up Sam emotionally and so she became increasingly perky. And when a character can openly say "Look, give birth now, get a baby as cute as I", you know this character has the potential to be annoying.

The Actress : Myolie Wu
This character doesn't test her acting wise. I am a fan of Myolie for the fact that

1. I followed her career since her debut performance
2. I declared when she made her debut she was one diamond in the rough, her limitations is due to her young age and now look at her. She is one fine acting talent and I can no longer vent my anger at bad actresses by simply saying, "See, Miss HK!", so I guess now I can only do so to "See, young singers!".

So I love her. But this is not her best work, it is actually one of her worst because she had better ones.Check out the moments to know why...

Best Moment
When she first pursued Sam. Very cute. Flirting scenes with Francis Ng and her chemistry with Ron Ng, one of the best moment.

Worst Moment
When she acts cute for the entire length of the series and looking like the healtiest heart patient who was about to die, credibility damaged severely but credibility almost gone when she flew to Rome to be with Sam and was so insistent on seeing Sam happy in a very too optimistic way. Problem is the characterisation, and at times the performance. I hope Myolie doesn't succumb to the fame thing; she should stick to being a serious character actress.

S4 & ZITA
The Characters
As in Solar 4, named Isaac, Roy, Chris and Donald.

Of all 4, my favourite is Isaac and the one that I couldn't care less is Roy. These 4 could have been better characters if more time was focussed on them but because of the whole Sam-Vincent-Belle thing, the character which is most developed is Isaac whilst Zita is 2nd most developed, the one who really suffered is Roy. Donald and Chris are in betweens. We know so little, seen so little even during the training sessions but if I knew how the Donald, Zita and Isaac thing would become, I'd rather not see them at all.

The Actors & Actress : Ron Ng, Kenneth Ma, Bosco Wong, Sammul Chan and Michelle Ye
Of all the 5, the one with the best acting as in slightly above average is actually Sammul Chan and Bosco Wong. Bosco would have displayed more better acting skills if his character is beyond just the best friend of Donald. The ones with most to do is Ron and Michelle. They actually have some acting moments whilst Kenneth and Bosco, they're just to fill in the quota.

So I can't comment much on their acting except for Ron, Michelle and Sammul.

Ron - Handsome guy with the lazy eyes that some girls may find mesmerizing, his best acting moments are always when with Francis Ng. Away from Francis, he was mostly a log of wood. But I like him and I like his Isaac whom I hated at first for his arrogance and rudeness but his Isaac grows on you. I am fond of Isaac but sickened by the fact that he had to have a triangle love involving Zita. I thought he had more chemistry with Myolie and I actually thought Isaac would fall for Zoe first because there was so many indications. I would write more on this The Most Overlooked Moment.

Sammul - His Donald is arrogant and at times rude but the entire series, he had just one singular role and purpose; to run after Zita. I find that so one dimensional though Sammul did a decent job in conveying his interest in Zita.

Bosco - Best friend of Donald, then best friend of other S4 members. Other than that, nothing to do and yet his Chris is one decent fellow, hard working and all. His relationsip with Coco was so sudden. He had some moments where he broke his friendship with Donald or his concern for his mom, but it felt like Hallmark moment in our Malaysian toll paying system; TOUCH & GO. Any actor could have played this role since so little to do.

Kenneth - Another Ma, another actor with very little charisma and below average acting talents. And in here nothing to do. Can't say he is in here for cute factor because his Roy is mostly clueless. Another TOUCH & GO. You wouldn't even miss him.

Michelle - At best wooden, at worst scary bulging eyes with too much gloss on her lips and messy hair with tight clothings more to emphasise her figure than to complement her acting. I find her sometimes very good in very small roles or secondary roles..NO! I mean she is sometimes good when she wants to be and she can be very bad when she doesn't bother and in here she is I am sorry to say bad, pretty bad.

Best Moment
Training sessions, Ron with Francis and Myolie, Bosco when with Donald, Donald when with Kok Fung who plays his father and nope, can't think of one when it comes to Michelle. Maybe when she passes through a particular scene.

Worst Moment
Not the WORST TV MISTAKE which in shall state later. Worst moment? When Donald dumped Zita for a reason that until now I still do not know. It was like the writer wasnted to give Isaac a shot at wooing Zita so Donald had to leave first but it was so illogical. I can't understand it. So fine, Donald out of the picture but Isaac and Zita lasted for like less than 1 episode, haven't even started yet. And Zita's reaction towards Donald dumping her was uneventful, was so not there. I am still confused.

EVERYBODY ELSE
Amongst all the second liners, I would say I enjoyed most Jerry Lam and Louisa So's performance. They have great chemistry together whilst Jerry Lam was the best when with Myolie. Louisa was also so pretty. Kok Fung was great as the strict, egoiostical father with a very heavy burden, Lok Ying Kwan was mighty dashing as the Japanese pilot Taylor. Nancy Wu was pretty nasty as the possessive Coco but she is one talent I recommend paying attention to. Worst secondary actor in my opinion is Sek Sau. Basically the secondary actors had little to do but still managed to make the best of what they had to do.

GUEST STARS
The funniest was Eason Chan, the worst was Twins and the most irrelevant was Dave Wang.

My Picks
Best Of The Best Moment
One moment, which was tears inducing was when Belle tried to commit suicide and Sam was there to persuade her not to. More details in EPISODE 39 of my Episodic Thoughts.

Worst Of The Worst Moment
Episode 1, where Vincent opened his mouth to speak English. That was the worst moment in this series, one of the worst moment in TV history and definitely Joe Ma's worst moment ever. Nothing can take over this. Francis Ng's English was bad enough, Ron Ng was also quite bad, Sammul Chan's was passable, Myolie Wu & Jerry Lam spoke very good English with HK accent, everybody else was bearable but Joe Ma was suffering and I suffered as well. He wasn't speaking English, he wasn't mumbling, he was making sound like as if he was speaking English with an accent when it was all gibberish. I suspect it was because of this we see very little of Vincent flying a plane.

Most Missed The Boat Moment
The potentially interesting love story between Isaac and Zoe. Isaac seemed so keen on Zoe you know, but I was wrong. It never developed, it got cut before it even had a chance to develop. A great pity.

Worst TV Mistake
When Donald arranged pebbles to make a heart shape declaration of love with the words "Donald Love Zita". I fell down from my chair. More details in EPISODE 25 of my Episodic Thoughts. Also when I realised Isaac's name in here, the spelling I mean is ISSAC. Still I refuse to spell Isaac as Issac in my review and my thoughts. Nope, Isaac is the one for me!

Most "Sick of Hearing This Quote" Quote
"I don't know", courtesy of Belle and Sam.

Most "Sick of Seeing This Place" Place
Rome. Everything happened at Rome when the most romantic city in my opinion is Venice. Why can't they go to Venice?

Worst Writing/Acting Moment
The scene where Vincent died or it could just be bad acting, because I cannot believe Vincent, who had just deliver a message to Belle and he was eager to see her could die SMILING. Nope, I do not believe in that, and so little blood. His death was really the worst of the worst moment and worst of the worst acting but if course one moment topped this one as stated above.

Most Anticipated Scene But Killed By The Performance
First, Vincent's death but killed by the writing and Joe Ma's awful performance. But the one I really wanted to see was Belle hearing Vincent's last message to her but that was killed by Flora's annoying and very tearless crying and her mumbling of her words.

Most Unbelievable Plot
One worthy mention is why Donald broke up with Zita. I am still wondering why, and you can also say this is also one of the Worst Writing Moment. My choice is Sam's profession after he was hurt and he couldn't fly due to his eyesight problems. Instead of something more appropriate like mayeb you know ground crew or that tower people since he is a captain, he has experience in dealing with crisis, he became a PR guy, or rather a manager in the Customer Service dept. I was shocked. Such a waste of talent you know.

Most Unbelievable But Often Portrayed Reality In This Series
Zoe, someone earning a lowly salary can afford to fly to Rome, Japan on such a frequent basis, that I feel poor by watching this series. So glamarous you know but even with discounted air tickets or even free tickets, I don't think anyone can afford to take such frequent trips.

Another unbeliavble one is towards somewhere in the middle everybody moves into Ruby's house and of course at the end everybody moves away. But that's just an interesting fact.

One more that could be the most of the most in this category is how no office politics in the airport. In fact they were so friendly to the customers it was scary. I don't think that's how people will react because that is false friendliness. And where are the customs officers? You know those who check passports?

Most Vomit Inducing Moment
Belle and Sam's first kiss, more like Sam trying to eat Belle and Belle trying to blow her breath into Sam's mouth. The joke is this kiss won the ASTRO Wah Lai Toi TV Awards 2004 when this series hasn't even broadcast over at ASTRO yet!

Most Overhyped Fact
Overhyped as in everybody has one in here, that is an English name. And not one has the same English name with the other. Fact because in real life everybody has an English name. This is not a complaint but really an observation that the Chinese name is almost redundant in here. Even the parents call their children by their English names.

Most Preferred Ending
This series ended as described in the Last Episode of my Episodic Thoughts. But do scroll down to the bottom of my thoughts for my preferred ending. I just though after all the disasters and the tragedies, Belle deserves a second chance at love.

Most Missed Plot
As in the missing element in this series that I wish there was some such as a villain (well maybe not since there is no place for a villain in here) or some really big crisis, like terrorists taking over a plane and how Sam or Vincent or the S4 save the day (maybe this would be too sensitive a topic) or some major airport crisis like a plane crash at the airport (but then that would not be good PR).

Most Unwanted But Rumoured Reality
A sequel to this series. Thank you very much but frankly I have had enough.

Verdict
Interesting series that suffered due to bad writing, bad editing and too long, always too long. Imagine Secret of the Heart was long but it had plenty to say. This series is 40 episodes and it basically says the same old things. But fans of Francis Ng or those who wants to see great acting, please please please watch this series. Also very nice costumes and beautiful sceneries, so these are plus points. However be prepared for the draggy parts. Like I said above, I had to adjust my rating for this series from 4 and a half stars to this present one because this series felt like it was never going to end, it was increasingly repetetive, the plot unimaginative and the entire premise so been there done that. Saving grace is Francis Ng. So don't miss this one for the sake of Francis.

Interesting Observation
I truly truly love the name Solar Airways or Solar Airlines and its logo. When will we really have a Solar eh? This is perhaps the one most original element in this series.

For More Info
This series is in a way a promotion of the HK airport and so you might be interested to know more about it. Click here then. I still think KLIA is the more beautiful airport though.

Nick, who works as chief designer of Nee and Elaine, a famous model, have been dating for a decade but have not gotten married because of Nick's work. Soon after Michelle is taken under Nick's wing (when it is realized that she has both a love and talent for fashion design), their relationship goes on the rocks. They break up, Elaine begins to date Nee CEO Marco, and Michelle begins to fall in love with Nick.

The series' main drama revolves around Ella, a confident and impressively talented fashion design student who suffers from a frosty relationship with her mean and stingy sister-in-law and the worst luck imaginable. She and best friend Fei Fei befriend Michelle early on in the series, but when all three of them go to work at Nee, Ella becomes intensely jealous of Michelle and consistently attempts to sabotage her while trying to climb the company's corporate ladder. She eventually becomes chief designer at Nee, with the help of dopey and unknowing Siu Lung, Fei Fei's older brother. Meanwhile, Ella's schemes cause her to lose her two good friends, while Fei Fei leaves Nee and becomes a model, falling in love with Michelle's younger brother.

Ella finally learns her lesson when Siu Lung is hit by a car after pushing her out of harm's way. She apologizes to everyone, and enters a youth fashion design competition along with Fei Fei and Michelle. After re-entering the fashion design world by founding his own company, Nick realizes that he has grown feelings for Michelle. Unfortunately, she has decided to leave overseas to pursue her career, as Nick promises to wait in Hong Kong for her return.

Evaluation of Cast and Characters
Michelle / Myolie Wu
What a difference from Myolie's character of Ling from Survivor's Law! Michelle is lazy, immature, and irresponsible although good-hearted. Myolie's Michelle is slightly wild and unambitious although sincere in her treatment towards others. It was very interesting to watch Myolie in this role, because it's such a diversion from how I see Myolie in real life, a hardworking, focused, and down-to-earth actress. But she, like Michelle, is also young and fresh, and this never-seen-before character from her acting repertoire again proves the versatility of this actress. Good performance and good use of body language to portray Michelle. But was anyone else thinking "wtf?!" with Michelle's personal fashion sense? Half the time I thought she fell into a lake and and then became a wicked witch minus the hat.

Ella / Sharon Chan
One of the not-cutesy-real-pretty newbies who also somehow looks cunning and crafty, very appropriate look for the role of scheming Ella. A credible job, but she is missing that extra something. Which means, Sharon looks sad when she's supposed to be sad, looks happy when she's supposed to be happy, looks evil when she's supposed to be evil. But she's missing that "it" factor, the "it" that carries actors and actresses through a long and versatile career, the "it" that makes audience members remember both the character and the actress. I can't deny that she has potential though, if she carves out a self-image and some sense of identity, she could probably end up being a TVB Little Sister. Also has a Hong Kong model figure (i.e. tall and thin), because duh, she used to be a model.

Nick / Tse Kwan Ho
Never-seen-before actor who has the potential to be unbelievably boring if you don't watch him carefully. If you don't pay attention to him, Tse Kwan Ho tends to come off as monotone and expressionless, but under scrutiny, you realize that he's simply a subtle actor. A little too subtle for my taste actually. He's also too short for Myolie, although the two share a kind of strange but appropriate teacher-student chemistry (no romantic chemistry, though). This is surprising considering he has no teacher-student chemistry with his own teacher, the actor who played Michelle's grandfather.

Elaine / Michelle Ng
Always a reliable supporting actress but never TVB's Big Sister, Michelle did a good-enough job as Elaine in this series. Her Elaine is classy, intelligent, mature, and sexy. Perfect for the role. Unfortunately, Elaine is not a particularly memorable character, except near the end when she chooses neither Nick nor Marco. By the way, who played Marco? That man annoyed me to no end.

Other Characters
Rain Lee (Fei Fei) was cute for the first 10 minutes and it all went downhill from there. She speaks too loudly, overacts, and those annoying peace signs while screaming "Yeah!" made my stomach churn. Kenneth Ma did an average job as the clueless Siu Lung but he's pretty boring to watch. Chris Lai doesn't have much to work with although he's charming enough as Michelle's younger brother. The younguns' performances here are overshadowed by that of the actor who played Michelle's grandfather, both an underacted and charismatic portrayal.

Special Mention
The clothes
Nice for the most part, my favourite outfit was the white one Ella designed, accompanied with Michelle's hat.

Consensus
Fans of Myolie (for her portrayal of Michelle's relationship with Nick, her father, and her grandfather) would not want to miss this one. Otherwise, it's only a passable series one can watch to kill time.

Foreword
This drama is loosely based on a Korean folk tale which is sort of like a Korean parody of Cinderella. Patji is supposedly the evil, mean, and ugly sister that everyone hates and Kongji is the soft-spoken supernice girl that ends up with the prince. In reality, Kongji is actually a scheming girl whose smile conceals daggers, a girl who acts nice to get men while Patji, although sometimes mischievious, tomboyish, rude and hell-bent on revenge, is actually a good-hearted girl (sort of like Xiao Yan Zhi from HZGG).

Plotline
The series begins with Songee (Patji) and Hee-won (Kongji) in elementary school. Songee likes a boy (who happens to be Hyun Sung as we later find out) who is popular with all the girls. Hee-won insists that she is not interested in him and when the teacher tells the girls to pick a guy to sit with, Songee grabs Hyun Sung's hand. However, Hee-won then approaches Hyun Sung and asks him to sit with her! Hyun Sung then rips his hand from Songee to go sit with Hee-won. Songee is furious and begins to beat Hee-won up! Thus begins a childhood rivalry between Songee and Hee-won.

Fast forward around 10 years and nothing has changed. Songee is actually a good-hearted and innocent girl although she is loud and mischievous. Her bad temper renders her quite unpopular among her peers. Hee-won, who is pretty and smiles all the time, is liked by both young men and women, although she is in reality a conniving and selfish young woman at heart who is secretly deathly jealous of Songee (I have no clue why).

Hee-won works as a special events planner at an amusement park where Songee works as a costume entertainer (those people who walk around the park in funny costumes to entertain little kids). This helps to provide some situational comedy since Songee also happens to loathe kids. At the same park, Hyun Sung works as a marine animal trainer and Seung Joon is the son of the amusement park's owner. Through a little misunderstanding, Songee and Hyun Sung butt heats but eventually become good friends, with Songee running to Hyun Sung whenever she has problems. One day, Hee-won tricks Songee (again) and Songee vows revenge. She does it by sabotaging the parade planned by Hee-won. Songee wrecks one of the floats (a train)...but that night Seung Joon decides to take the train float for a practice round and is trapped inside when the float is set aflame (by the electronic wires that were wrecked by Songee). Songee, who witnesses the scene, is mortified and carries the now-unconscious Seung Joon out of the float. After reviving him, she disappears when the paramedics arrive and Seung Joon wonders who his guardian angel-saviour is (he caught a glimpse of Songee before she ran off).

Hee-won tries her best to win over Seung Joon and sabotage his attempts to find Songee, to no avail. Seung Joon and Songee begin a relationship where Seung Joon tries his hardest to protect Songee from the gossip of the park employees. Hyun Sung, who has fallen in love with Songee's spunk and honesty, keeps his feelings secret although he constantly lends her an ear for her problems. Hyun Sung chooses to not pursue Songee not because he feels inferior to the rich, nice, and good-looking Seung Joon, but mainly because he hides a severe heart disease that silently but constantly endangers his life.

Everything goes fairly well until a tape that contains footage of Songee's sabotage is discovered, and of course Hee-won uses it to her advantage and Seung Joon is devastated. Songee is heartbroken when Seung Joon breaks up with her. She stops by a fountain and breaks down in tears and is discovered by Hyun Sung, who hugs her and reveals his feelings to a shocked Songee. They continue their friendship while Hyun Sung silently waits for Songee to forget about Seung Joon. Seung Joon doesn't have the heart to fire Songee, much to the anger of Hee-won. Eventually Seung Joon realizes that he still deeply loves Songee. He discovers that Hee-won framed Songee for stealing the tape, and it is also revealed (in front of everyone else who works at the park) that Hee-won staged yet another event to frame Songee for injuring her. Fortunately, her scheme was busted with the help of Hyun Sung. Seung Joon tries to repair their relationship but Songee sadly points out that Seung Joon will probably never be able to fully trust her again while Seung Joon is speechless because in a way it is true. But of course Songee ends up going back to Seung Joon's side anyway.

Hyun Sung, with the encouragement of good friend Sam Yeol, declares a "fair competition" for Songee to Seung Joon, who agrees. Seung Joon decides that the competition should be truly fair and offers to pay for a heart operation for Hyun Sung who initially vehemently denies the offer. However, after going into a short coma (when Songee begins to suspect that she has grown feelings for her good friend), Hyun Sung decides to undergo the operation. But alas...fate takes an ugly turn and Seung Joon and Songee decide to leave overseas while Hyun Sung quietly accepts the loss. At the airport, though, Songee decides that she is happier and more comfortable with Hyun Sung (she feels that she can truly be herself around him) and decides not to leave. Hyun Sung is overjoyed and hugs Songee.

Fast forward one year...Hyun Sung and Songee still work at the park and constantly bicker and butt heads. Hee-won has become less manipulative and now concentrates on her career instead of on men. Seung Joon returns, the three of them joke around. The last scene has Seung Joon and Hyun Sung teasing Songee, but it is unclear as to whether Hyun Sung and Songee got together.

Evaluation of Cast and Characters
Jang Nara as Yang Songee
When she first appeared she reminded me a lot of Barbie Hsu's Shan Cai from the Taiwanese series Meteor Garden...petite, skinny, short, and plain-looking. But a major difference is that Songee cries a lot more than Shan Cai...she cries in every episode in this series. Jang Nara gave an average performance as Songee. It's not that she can't act, I do believe she can...it's just that she failed to truly move me with her portrayal of Songee (at least in the weepie parts). I'm not sure why. I think that she just simply isn't good enough to take on a series on her shoulders. She doesn't have what it takes to be a lead actress. Jang Nara lacks what I've gotten used to seeing in most Korean actresses- a kind of delicate underacting and inner aura that is revealed at just the right times. She's actually quite cute in most scenes and I like her best in the bantering scenes between her and Kim Rae Won. But frankly, her pouts get rather repetitive and her initially decent portrayal of the fiery Songee turned bland because of too much camera-milking of the pouts. Jang Nara does not look compatible with either Kim Jae Won or Kim Rae Won. She's just too good-friends-like with Kim Rae Won...their onscreen chemistry is much too platonic rather than romantic. As for Kim Jae Won, he just doesn't look good with Jang Nara and appears to be an even more unlikely romantic possibility for Jang Nara's character. In general I found Jang Nara's performance to be inadequate. As for her character, Songee confused me. She's supposed to be a tomboyish tough girl...but she cries in every episode (in some episodes she actually cries a few times). Is Songee actually a a girl who is rough and tough on the outside but actually quite an emotional weakling on the inside? If this is true, I fail to see this in Jang Nara's performance, because she does a much better job as the tough and blunt girl than as the weeper.

Kim Rae Won as Kim Hyun Sung
My favourite Korean actor (or Asian actor, actually) ever since I saw him in Wuri's Family and in here Kim Rae Won does not disappoint, giving the best performance of the series. Of course, when he first appeared I didn't even recognize him (his hairstyle changed dramatically from WF which he filmed right before this series) but in my opinion successfully and convincingly changed his image. Kim Rae Won displays some impressive comic instinct here. His Hyun Sung is a lot more sunny and positive than his dark and brooding character of Young-Hoon from WF. He gives layers to Hyun Sung and this is why I believe this actor gave the most insightful portrayal of his character. He teases Songee to no end but actually has a deep fear of growing feelings for anyone because he knows that his life is constantly in danger because of his illness. At the same time, Hyun Sung is unfailingly supportive to Songee, although as I've stated above, Kim Rae Won's chemistry with Jang Nara is much too platonic (the reason revealed below). In any case, Kim Rae Won proves to be quite a versatile actor. Trust me, Kim Rae Won will definitely be someone to look out for in Korea's acting field. My Love Patzzi actually got him noticed and he has now risen to super-stardom after filming Attic Cat.

Kim Jae Won as Kang Seung Joon
This actor was in Wuri's Family too, playing main character Wuri. In here he looks at least five years older with his glasses, new hairstyle, and business-suit wardrobe and, like Kim Rae Won, makes a successful and believable image change. He is likeable here as the quiet, demure, and soft-hearted Seung Joon, although at times Kim Jae Won makes it seem as if the guy is girlish or wimpish. He doesn't necessarily lack chemistry with Jang Nara, but they just don't look good together. This series is a case of imcompatible pair casting. The three are good individual casting decisions, but together either pair does not appear to be a convincing romantic couple. Kim Jae Won gives a good enough performance as Seung Joon but I believe that his role can be played by any other actor. Not a breakthrough performance.

Hong Eun Hee as Eun Hee-Won
Quite a natural performance as the manipulative and conniving Hee-Won. Hong Eun Hee definitely did a good job as the nasty and scheming young woman but there's a major flaw in her performance. There's no vulnerability in it. For those of you who watched All About Eve, Kim So Yeon's portrayal of Young Mi was brilliant. Young Mi was also scheming, selfish, and nasty, but Kim So Yeon made the character human, flesh and blood and bared a soul in her performance. Hong Eun Hee fails to do that here, although she succeeds in portraying the secretly evil and manipulative side of her character.

On the Other Characters and Performances
Korean dramas seem to suffer from a kind of schizophrenic disease. What I mean is, they have a dual personality in terms of character portrayal and plot. You have the serious love stuff with the main love triangle/square, then on the other side the love leads' friends engage in an absolutely comic, if not cartoonish, romance story themselves. It's all over the place in Korean TV. All About Eve- the serious Hyeong Chul-Sun Mi-Young Mi-Woo Jin square and then the droll love story of equally droll friends of the leads. Wuri's Family- the serious Wuri-Dae In-Tae Sil-Young Hoon square, then the ridiculous pursuing by Wuri's friend of Wuri's older sister Hana. My Love Patzzi, although infintely less melodramatic than any other Korean series, boasts the most ridiculously cartoonish outer circle love story yet, as presented in Sam-Yeol's and Instructor Nam's lovelives. The wacky antics and shtick were funny at first, but toward the end they just got silly. With that said, the other actors did just an average job (they didn't have much to work with), with Kim Kyung Sik (Sam Yeol) displaying quite an affable comedic charisma. Shin Dong Mi annoyed me to no end but the lady who played the cleaning team's manager was bloody hilarious!

The Goodies
Making an amusement park the setting for this series provides some refreshing situational comedy and is actually a terrific and new idea. The scenes with the marine animals and Hyun-Sung with the baby tiger were great. Also, the weather always seemed so pleasant in this series, which added to the "feel-GOOD!" flavour. The theme song and other music used in the series is cheesy but very pleasing to the ear...Korean series always have this wonderful knack for finding music that hits right on the nail in terms of complimenting plot and individual scenes and My Love Patzzi does not let us down in this aspect. Kim Rae Won fans will be pleasantly surprised at the outgoing and bright Hyun-Sung that the actor plays. This series is also very different from other Korean series in that it is much more light-hearted and more fast-paced. There's probably more dialogue in this series than all the K-series I've seen combined. It moves much more like a romantic comedy and is a surprising break away from the usually overdone heart-love-heart-love-heart-love-heart stuff and melodrama/tragedy that has come to characterize Korean TV.

Take It or Leave It
Shin Dong Mi...boy that woman was annoying. I could have done without her. My apologies to Jang Nara fans but she just doesn't cut it as the feisty Songee. She pouts too much in here and also cries so much that she could be considered schizophrenic too. She angrily pants whenever she's bullied on and swings a broom at Hee-won but then weeps and weeps whenever there's trouble in paradise in terms of her and Seung Joon. Blah. Make up your mind girl
.
From The Grapevine
Shortly after watching this series, I watched an interview with Kim Rae Won. It turns out that he, Jang Nara, and Kim Jae Won are actually very good friends in real life. This is, I feel, the reason why their onscreen chemistry is so platonic. Him and Jang Nara are third-year students majoring in film/drama at the same university, and him and Kim Jae Won became good friends after filming WF a few years back. They occasionally have "phone dates", so considering how popular and busy each actor is, this proves they really are pretty good friends in real life. During filming, they all kept adding lines that weren't in the script, and the director found them quite believable and appropriate for the movement of the dialogue and so didn't cut those parts out. While filming My Love Patzzi, Kim Rae Won was dating Kim Hyo-Jin (his co-star who played Tae-Sil in WF) but after 8 months, they have now broken up. Since this series, he has gone on to film Attic Cat (already released) and a movie called Ing, and is now working on a new series called Young Bride. Interestingly enough, when asked which actor he wanted to work with in the future, Kim Rae Won's answer was none other than "Film Emperor" Tony Leung Chiu Wai from Hong Kong (Infernal Affairs, In the Mood for Love). He also stated that Hyun-Sung is his favourite character yet out of all the roles he has played, but is in reality a much more quiet person. From his interview and other interviews that I've seen, Kim Rae Won seems to display a quiet wisdom and maturity beyond his years (he's only 22), but also has a good sense of humour. He also was recently named Best Actor and Most Popular at the 2003 MBC Awards. As for Jang Nara, she is a popular singer in Korea, and is being seen in a slowly increasing number of Korean series. Kim Jae Won is a white-hot actor, acting in popular series such as Romance and Rival, and has been dubbed the owner of "the ladykiller's smile" by Korean media.

To Watch or Not to Watch, That is the Question
Watch if you're a Kim Rae Won or romantic comedy fan. It's a decent length and a good choice if you're looking for a different kind of Korean series. Stay away if you don't like shtick comedy or if you don't like people with very artificial-looking dyed hair (Jang Nara, who's orangeish-blonde in this series).

How Long
36 episodes, 16 tapes

Who
Lisa Wong
Danny
Wong Hei - Ah Kong
Jessica Hester Hsuan - Ah Moon
Jade Leung

Year
2000

Storyline
Wong Hei/Jessica
Wong Hei and Jessica are neighbor cum colleagues. Wong Hei is a loner who couldn't get along with his colleagues. Jessica always tries to talk to him but just got snubbed at most of the time. During operation, Wong Hei always assigned Jessica to be the reinforcement. Jessica is not very happy with this as she want to take part in the action and wants a chance to prove her abilities. She thought that Wong Hei is picking on her but found out that it's Lisa's idea.

Jessica began to misunderstand Lisa. Wong Hei later allows Jessica to be part of the operation but Jessica was injuried during her very first operation. That criminal stabbed an injection needle at Jessica's leg and that criminal turned out to have contracted AIDS. Jessica is devasted and horrified by the thought that she might have contracted AIDS. She rushed out of her ward and Wong Hei chased after her. Jessica expressed her worry. "I cannot fall, I still have to take care of my family. Ever since my mother lost her money in shares when I was young, I had to take care of the family. They won't know what to do without me." Wong Hei told her " No matter how close u are, u are not responsible for their life, u can't take care of them for the rest of your life. Let them have a chance to learn to be independent."

Wong Hei gave Jessica a lot of help and encouragement during this time and they drew closer. Jessica found that she did not have AIDS and overwhelmed with joy, she kissed Wong Hei. Soon after, they started dating.

During an operation, Wong Hei realizes that he cannot overcome the past incident and is unable to shoot at criminal anymore. He can't bring himself to open fire. He is dejected and wanted to quit. He shuts himself out from everyone, including Jessica. She is very worried about him. Later Lisa talk him round.

That convict that was shot death by Wong Hei has a daughter Gong Siu Yau. She's mentally unstable and kept trying to seek revenge on Wong Hei and his family. Wong Hei, feeling guilty, tolerated her and tried to help her. With Wong Hei's care and concern, Siu Yau finally found a job and became more cheerful. Wong Hei and Siu Yau became really close and Jessica was so jealous. Finally they broke off, but not all because of Siu Yau, but because they realize that the 2 of them are too similar in character that they argue too often. Wong Hei later fell in love with Siu Yau and Jessica dated Hei's brother.

Siu Yau and Wong Hei is really close, but unfortunately, Siu Yau's mother was murdered by her father's lover (her father is a gay actually). Siu Yau suffered a serious blow again and she hides away from Wong Hei. One day Wong Hei saw her taking dope and is devastated. He wants to help her, but everything is too late, Siu Yau contracted AIDS and is dying. Wong Hei helps Siu Yau pre-celebrate her birthday before she dies.

Jessica on the other hand feels that she cannot get along with Wong Hei's brother at all and decided to break up with him. Actually in Jessica's heart there is always Wong Hei. Wong Hei accidentally fired at Queenie during a mission and Wong Hei once again became very despondent. Everyone is very worried about him, especially Jessica, who tries ways and means to get Hei back to the right track. But Hei seems to have given up all hopes. He started to hang around with gangster, and once, to convince the leader of the gang that he's no longer the old Hei, he almost broke Jessica's leg.

However, it seems that Hei is acting as undercover agent, trying to nap the big ring leader. Everything went smoothly, the leader trusts Hei, but unfortunately, she saw Hei hugging that helmet belonging to Jessica at an alley and starts to have doubts. She tested Hei and found that he's undercover and starts to take revenge. Hei's father is killed as a results and Hei is once again very devastated. He asked Jessica to marry him to lure the leader out. That leader is a girl and she's in love with Hei actually.

They succeed, the leader captured Jessica and tied her in the middle of the sea. Hei has a fierce gun battle with that leader and finally succeed in killing her. But Hei fell into the sea (actually I think he fell into the sea purposely, he wants to commit suicide) and Jessica search frantically for Hei in vain.

Lisa/Danny
I'll briefly talk about them lah, since I fast forward most of their part.
Lisa is a widow, her husband died in a car crash and she remained single till now. She met Danny through her parents. Her father is a famous football player and Danny's magazine firm had an interview with Lisa's father. Lisa went to Danny's company to take back her parent's photo and met Danny. They met in the church and a book store before this and later became good friends. Danny had a fiancée but she went overseas. Danny did something wrong to her and she is unable to forgive him. Danny is still waiting for her after 8 years, but she's adamant about their breakup.

Lisa and Danny got closer and closer because of Lisa's parents. Later, Lisa's parents died and Danny is always there to support and help her. They decided to give each other a chance. However, just when they started dating, Melissa came back. She wants to patch up with Danny. After much consideration, Danny still chooses Lisa and proposed to her.

Danny seems to be involve in some drug trafficking business. Lisa begins to wonder what happens to Danny. It happens that Danny killed his mother in Holland when he was young, and Ah Ho found out that threatened Danny he would called the police unless he traffick drugs with him.

Once Danny is trying to smuggle some drugs through a custom and Lisa caught him red handed. Danny told Lisa about it, and Lisa forgave him, partly because Danny is repentant and Lisa is pregnant.

Comments
When my mother asked me whether this serial was worth watching, I hesitated. Because I received quite some feedback that it was a pretty boring show and a lot of Jessica and Hei's fans were kind of disappointed with it. But I went ahead, because it has been a long time since I watched Wong Hei's serial and I sort of missed his performance.

When I watched, yes, it was indeed boring. But only Lisa and Danny's parts are boring. I love every part with Jessica and Wong Hei and I really enjoyed seeing them together much to my surprise coz I didn't think they would match initially.

And there are quite some touching bits between the 2. Basically I just fast forwarded all the parts with Lisa and Danny and I ended up finishing the serial in just 3 days? Coz their weightage is 50% Lisa/Danny, 50% Wong Hei/Jessica.....

Another thing, before I watch this serial, I thought it's only 20 episodes, but when the tapes kept coming and coming, I was like "OH NOOOOOOOOO, how come soooooo bloody long? It's getting on my nerves really." Such a boring show and it's so long?!!! If they cut all the Lisa and Danny's parts and make the serial 20 episodes, I would like it 100 times better.

Fav scenes
I guess any scene with Jessica and Wong Hei is nice. Let me name a few.
I like the one where Jessica thought she had AIDS. She rushed out from her ward and Wong Hei was there to comfort her. Jessica says she cannot have AIDS, she has to look after her family, she cannot break down, no matter how sad she is.

Another one is where Jessica cannot stand her mother's grumbling and ran out of Lisa's house. Wong Hei took her to the swimming pool to calm her down and both of them swam happily together.

When Wong Hei still couldn't get over the fact that he killed an unarmed criminal. Jessica followed him but he ignored her and threw her helmet away. Jessica was completely helpless and so worried about him. I love this scene.

When Wong Hei finally found Siu Yau taking dope. He tried to help Siu Yau, only to find out that she contracted AIDS. Really sad scene. One of my favorite and the most touching one of the entire serial.

The Could Have Been Better Scene
Lisa's father died peacefully one day morning. It's really unexpected because he seems to be in the pink of health. Everyone is shocked, especially Lisa and her mother, so devastated and sad. I thought this scene could have been more touching. I only felt a little tinge of sadness when I watch this and later I felt literally nothing when I saw Lisa and her mother cry. Not even tears welled up in my eyes. Rarely do I feel nothing when a character died.

Fav character
I like Moon in the front part. She's strong, determined and cute at times. But later she got pretty unreasonable again. Why is Jessica always playing such unreasonable characters leh??! Why why why? But actually I still like Ah Moon though.

And I like Wong Hei's character at the later part. I blamed him for a change of heart initially, but when I see how he treats Siu Yau, I am really touched.

I also like Jade's Leung character, though it's a minor one. I always wonder where Jade Leung went to after Burning Flame, coz there don't seems to be many of her serials. Frankly speaking, I personally think Jade is another great actress but not well promoted by TVB. Her performance in Burning Flame is terrific and left me a deep impression on her. I really wish to see her more often.

Fav Couple
Lisa and Danny.

You gotta be kidding Seagull!!

Yeah right, how do u know I was pulling your leg. =p

Of course the favorite couple in my mind is none other than Jessica and Wong Hei! If not for them I WOULD NEVER WATCH THIS SERIAL. Trust me I tried, I REALLY TRIED to watch Lisa and Danny's part! But I found myself zzzzzz when I tried to watch their part, so I concluded that it's better for me to fast forward their parts instead of sleeping.

The Best Performance
Wong Hei. It has gotta be Wong Hei. He's very good in here. Well ok he's good in every serial he is in. When he doesn't smile, he really have that attitude face, if u get what I mean. And when he found out that he is unable to shoot at criminals anymore, he's so devastated. Ah Hei did that scene very well in my opinion.

The "ok" Performance
Jessica, though I like her character, I think she's only alright in here, not that striking. I think she was better in Game of Deceit and DIF4.

The Worst Performance
Lisa. I'm biased yeah right. U can say whatever u want but I absolutely hated her way of acting. Or is it because her character is always the noble and preachy sort that's why I can't stand her. Or is it really her acting. Fake is the word.

Danny. This guy is WORSE than Lisa. At least Lisa is able to talk well. This guy couldn't even talk well if u ask me! Just that silly look and irritating grin. I can't even stand his voice! One of the worst older actors I ever saw. And this kind of guy got 2 woman snatching him?!!!

I also don't like that guy who acted as Lisa's father, he also always just with the kind and silly face of his. Err I thought only the quality of new actor/actress is declining, now looks like even the old actors/actresses are getting on my nerves?!

The Surprisingly good Performance
That girl that played Siu Yau. Well, I first saw her in Healing Hands and ICAC. She's such a fake actress then and I thought she can never improve. Well I guess she proved me wrong in AMOC. Her performance is really surprisingly good. Of course not as terrific as Wong Hei or Jessica, but considering her acting experience and her past performance, her acting is good in here.

The Comical Factor
Why does TVB always like to give us the Lisa is still young impression? As in, remember that guy who played Gallen and Hawick's father in ATE!!!! He's now acting as Lisa's FATHER in here!!! My?!!! I think Lisa and that guy is about the same age in real life or somewhere near? I feel a bit funny coz they look like the same generation to me. And that Danny looks even older than Lisa's father if u ask me, and he has to call him UNCLE?!!

The Irritating Factor
Wong Hei's character sometimes. When he first appear in the serial, I thought he's a gang leader but he's a POLICE!?! A gangster looking police. And I hated the way he always snubbed at Ah Moon initially like the whole world owns him something kind of an attitude. So aloof, so conceited and sometimes arrogant. Very bad tempered. But we cannot really blame him, he had a rough time, he felt guilty for being so rash and killed a guy.

Queenie, that curry favoring pig! Very irritating!!!! Why are there such people in the world. Don't they feel their goose pimples coming out when they say such fake and shallow things? I hate her as much as Moon hates her in the serial.

Danny's character. Preachy and fake and wimpish. I just cannot stand the way he tries to be a "Mr Nice Guy".

From Irritating to wimpish to pathetic character
Definitely Siu Yau. At first u hated her for the way she treats Wong Hei, then u started to find her a bit irritating and trying to gain people's sympathy. Then u will start cursing her when she comes between Ah Hei and Jessica, but finally u would still feel so sad for her when she died. Actually everything is not her fault, she's the greatest victim in the whole mess. If only she is stronger, if only she can trust Wong Hei, they would make a cute couple.

Is it better than...
Nothing to Declare? Both are Custom shows and both stars Wong Hei, it's just as BORING. If AMOC take away Lisa/Danny, then AMOC is better, but AMOC has too much Lisa and Danny, so Nothing to Declare is better.

Detective serials like: DIF series, UE, O-Kay, AR etc
A BIG NONO. Of course those mentioned above are twice better and more action pact and intriguing.

So, what's the verdict really
See which group u belong to and decide for yourself whether u should rent AMOC.

1. If u are a Jessica and Wong Hei's fan and u don't mind watching your idol serials when they appear for only like 5 tapes out of 10, u can rent it. U should and would enjoy all the parts with them in it.

2. If u cannot stand the fact that Ah Hei and Jess only appeared for half the time in the serial, u would get a "I FEEL CHEATED OF MY MONEY" kind of a feeling. So don't rent, u would start cursing and u won't enjoy the serial, go rent DIF4 for Jessica or Burning Flame for Wong Hei. U get to see them a lot more. This is definitely not the right serial for Jessica's fans, coz if u ask me she's no where near pretty in here. I think she shouldn't tie her hair that way.

3. If u absolutely hated Lisa and Danny, don't rent this one, they appear very frequently.

4. If u are a Lisa and Danny fan, a definite yes because rarely do any TVB serials have these older artistes as the lead.

5. If u have no more new serials to watch and u just have to watch some TVB serial or else u will suffer from withdrawal symptoms!

6. If u like preachy serials, where the characters seems to be playing word games and talking in a "I know all" kind of a tone. They throw out a lot of "wise" quote at u.

I think I would be in category 2 if the tapes are not provided FREE of charge by my auntie! Even when the tapes are free, I feel pretty pissed sometimes, coz I'm not cheated of my money, but I'm cheated of MY TIME! If I know earlier this serial is so long, trust me, I won't bother.

Rating
N/A

Interesting Gossips
There are rumors that Wong Hei had some conflicts with Lisa and Danny. There were rumors that Ah Hei and Danny Lee did not quite get along because Ah Hei did not follow the script and would sometimes improvise and thus, Danny was confused. And Lisa thought that Wong Hei is an arrogant person. Also, Danny said that Wong Hei does not pay attention to his work and play around during the AMOC production.

Well if u ask me, of course I am all the way behind Wong Hei! I don't believe he's such an irresponsible actor and if he does not pay attention to his work and can have such a brilliant performance in the serial, then I must say he's a ultra talented actor.

Foreword
Fate is a funny thing. Whether you believe in it or not, it's always been an underlying force in many, if not all, TVB plots. In this series, it is the driving force, encompassed in the character of Belle who is probably the most far-fetched idealistic dreamer in recent TVB, and in its setting: an airport, a place where hellos and goodbyes are said, a place where fate meets and departs. And in recent TVB, this has got to be one of the defining series despite minor inconsistencies, successfully weaving aspects of different genres to produce a series that will likely win your heart. So, believe it or not, Triumph in the Skies lives up to the hype. Not to mention the series' title makes up the most hilarious acronym ever. Yup. A definite must-watch. Here's why.

Plotline
The romantic storyline of this series can be generally divided into three parts. But first we need to rewind one year before the gyst comes together.

Flashback
Sam & Belle
Fantasizing romantic "I believe in fate" Belle has decided that her other half will be the man who brings her a Triangel doll. This doll is the gift that cemented her parents' love, so she believes that whoever finds this particular doll will be her soulmate. Belle works at the same airport as Sam, a Solar Airways pilot who just happens to find the right doll on a trip to Rome. Alas, right before meeting each other Sam loses the doll (to Zoe, who picks it up after he accidentally drops it) so the two don't meet. Until yet another trip to Rome, that is. Belle loses her bracelet numerous times and every time Sam is the one who returns it. So the two decide this is fate and, thinking they know each other's names, share a passionate day together in the Italian capital. Unfortunately, trouble is in paradise. Sam mistakes Belle's name to be Donna, and through a misunderstanding he believes her to be a woman who plays men. Likewise, Sam is in Rome to help his best friend Vincent dump his millionth girlfriend Mimi, and Belle similarily mistakes Sam to be ladies' man Vincent. So the two part ways, never knowing the truth behind their ill-fated love affair. Flash forward one year.

Vincent & Belle
After meeting Belle, Vincent lampoons his previous lady-killer ways and begins a long, settled relationship with her. However, Vincent doesn't know about Belle's past with Sam, and Belle doesn't know that she mistook Sam for Vincent that one year ago in Rome. When Vincent finally introduces Sam to Belle, the two pretend they don't know each other, although some of the old feelings seem to surface. Vincent proposes to Belle, who accepts. Before the wedding though, the truth behind their misunderstanding is revealed (by Mimi, with some help from Zoe)...not only to Belle and Sam, but also to Vincent. After realizing that the past is the past, Belle and Vincent get married, and Sam calmly walks away. However, during the course of the marriage Sam constantly appears as an obstacle, and after she helps an injured woman during a car accident, Belle is worried that she has contracted AIDS. She informs Sam, and after finding out, Vincent becomes disappointed and asks Belle whether she still has feelings for Sam. Not knowing how to answer him, Vincent proposes a separation. On a trip to Rome, Vincent decides that he has thought everything through and that he and Belle belong together, but unfortunately dies in an accident when he blocks a little girl from being struck by a car. Shocked and melancholic, Belle realizes that Vincent was her one true love and begins to succumb to post-traumatic stress and mental illness, even attempting suicide. After a talk with the optimistic but ill Zoe, Belle thinks things through and goes on with her life once again.

Sam & Zoe
Bubbly, optimistic, and energetic Zoe falls in love with serious, cordial, and quiet Sam, and outwardly pursues him, Opposites attract? Yes, but there's just one catch. Sam happens to be 15 years her senior and isn't too crazy about the idea of dating a "little sister". Zoe is relentless in her pursuit, and after realizing he's grown feelings for her, Sam and Zoe begin the unconventional "craddle-robber" relationship. There are some uphills along the way, including the two realizing that their interests are a bit generation-differentiated, but Sam and Zoe are the epitome of love transcending all borders, be it age or race. The happy-go-lucky Zoe suffers from a heart disease, and when she finds out she tries to leave Sam. When it is revealed that Zoe will die very soon unless a heart comes in for a transplant, Sam and her decide to cherish every day they have together. One day, her illness takes a horrifying downturn, but luckily a heart comes in time and Zoe recovers. On the day she leaves the hospital, Sam proposes to Zoe (at the airport, surprise surprise) and in one of the most romantic scenes ever in TVB Zoe agrees (after a half-silly condition that on the count of 3 an airplane would fly over them) and they get married...in the airport. Duh.

Donald-Zita-Isaac
Rich boy Donald falls in love with Zita at first sight and makes his feelings clear, although Zita also makes it clear that she sees him only as a friend. Although she bickers endlessly with Isaac, Zita begins to grow feelings for him. Isaac has also begun to realize he's fallen in love with Zita, but because of brotherly loyalty decides to keep his feelings secret. After becoming touched by Donald's devotion, Zita finally agrees to a relationship during one of their pilot training sessions in Adelaide, New Zealand. However, Donald soon finds out that Zita first grew feelings for Isaac and that his good friend "gave her up" to him. When Donald's father succumbs to a stroke, he leaves Solar Airways to take over the family business and also breaks up with Zita in the process. Being this close to beginning a relationship, Isaac and Zita (and the rest of S4) find out the truth behind why Donald dumped Zita, the 5 become friends again and Zita ends up choosing neither Isaac or Donald. At the end of the series, Isaac, Zita, Roy, and Chris become SOs (Senior Officers).

Evaluation of the Cast and Characters
Francis Ng as Sam
The best performance of this series and I never expected any less from Francis Ng. His work in Triumph is iconic. The last time I saw him in a TVB series was in Old Time Buddy and he was fantastic in there. He's fantastic in here too, giving an absolutely commanding performance as the super-intelligent but honest-to-goodness Sam. His eyes brimmed with joy, spilled in tears, wavered in confusion, and watched in earnest. When put up against anyone else in this series, you realize just how good of an actor Francis Ng is. Whenever he's on the screen, he owns it. You forget entirely that Sam is being played by an actor...Francis Ng IS Sam in this series. Remember the very last episode when he succesfully proposed to Zoe? I clapped during that scene because I was so moved by Francis Ng's portrayal of Sam's joy. There's just one minor wrinkle. There's bad English, there's worse English, and then there's Francis Ng's English. Trust me, it doesn't get any worse. That isn't very fair though, since the other actors' English is just as bad as his. But Francis had this grossly exaggerated voice when he was speaking English that I was literally on the floor from laughing so hard! Another thing that had me laughing my head off? His hairstyle in this show that was greatly reminiscent of Elvis. Rumours have it that he designed it himself. But, with Francis Ng's terrific performance I found him to be good-looking. Not in a "Oh my, he's so dreamy and hot" way but in an ordinary, too honest, good man kind of way. Sam was also my favourite character of the show. He puts others' needs before his own, is compassionate, considerate, observant, and bright, but what I found interesting about his character in the beginning was his flaw. So determined he was to not have others feel he was in any way being lenient on his cadet younger brother Isaac, he actually became stricter with him than with the other cadets, even though he didn't realize it. His portrayal of the strict flight instructor in the first half was also fittingly serious, his catchphrase, "mm ho sung haai" (translating to don't loosen up) cracked me up everytime because S4 always finished the sentence for him. Francis Ng is perhaps also the only actor who could have made the unconventional relationship between Zoe and Sam not only believable, but also touching, because his portrayal of Sam's love for Zoe was absolutely flawless. The proposal scene and the 3-second scene where he kisses her on the forehead while looking at a rainbow (shown in the opening credits) were some of the most tender and delightfully romantic scenes ever done in TVB. He and Myolie Wu don't have electrifying chemistry necesarily, but you forget about that once you watch Francis act. Zero complaints. A phenomenal performance.

Flora Chan as Belle
If Francis Ng gave the best performance, then Flora Chan definitely gave the worst. Why? Because the role of Belle requires Flora Chan to cry frequently, and Flora Chan has always been the least convincing crier in the history of TVB. It's not that she overacts. The problem is, when Flora Chan cries, her face scrunches up, in a ball...it makes her crying scenes appear extremely forced and painful to watch. The worst thing is, during half of the scenes where she was SUPPOSED to cry, no tears came out! It was quite frustrating to watch Flora Chan here, because in her scenes opposite Francis Ng, you realize just how unengaged her performance was. Plus, during her scenes with Francis I wanted to throw something at the TV because her voice became really whiny. Also, I've never been very fond of Flora Chan's voice because of her accent. I've mentioned before that I wish she would take on a role besides the strong-career-woman but now I've decided she should stick to those. At least she's convincing in those ones...they're entirely uninteresting to watch but at least I don't get annoyed. Flora also didn't make a convincing nutcase towards the end at all...I sort of got the feeling that she was "there" but not really "there" at the same time. Now that I'm done with the negatives of her performance, I must also say that Flora Chan made a very believable couple with Joe Ma (but not half as good as Francis and Myolie of course), which I was surprised at at first because I never really imagined them as a pair, but thumbs-up to them and to the casting directors for this decision. Now, on the character...hmm, how should I put this lightly/nicely? Belle drove me up the wall! Many found Zoe to be annoying but frankly I wanted to kick Belle in every episode after the 3rd or so. She finds out about the misunderstanding before the marriage and runs to Sam, then she ultimately decides to marry Vincent anyway. But then she keeps on rocking back and forth between her feelings for Sam and her being touched by Vincent's devotion. Quite honestly, I felt she treated Vincent like crap...I didn't believe for one second she didn't want another chance with Sam and yet she still ran into Vincent's arms and then started regretting after Sam was dating Zoe. Make up your mind, you stupid woman! And then when Belle couldn't answer Vincent about who had a higher position in her heart, she couldn't take it when Vincent proposed a separation? Give me a break! Did she actually expect him to stand there and wait for god knows how long just so she could make up her mind? And then after he dies does Belle realize that Vincent was her one true love. Um, kind of late now don't you think? Dumbest and most annoying character of the show, Belle was. I didn't feel sorry for her when she started having hallucinations of Vincent's ghost because that was at the same time Zoe was in the hospital and Sam was forced to go back and forth to make sure both were okay. I was glad she ended up with no one. Nonetheless, it's amazing how much I ended up loathing this character. She wasn't a villain, but for how unappreciative she was of Vincent, she's really an unlikeable person.

Joe Ma as Vincent
A surprisingly credible performance from an actor I've always felt rather indifferent to. Normally he neither impresses me nor annoys me. But here he's decent as the totally devoted husband to the undeserving Belle. Joe Ma looks a little too tan here (so do Francis and Ron Ng) but I feel that this is this series is the one where Joe Ma gave his best performance. There are times when he seems a little stiff, but in general I think he gave an honest and wholehearted performance. I felt sorry for his character. No matter how much Vincent took care of Belle or how well he treated her, Sam always seemed to assume the number one position in her heart. And then when he finally thought it through and decided the two of them were the fated lovers he dies a hero. Poor Vincent. In any case, I also enjoyed Francis' and Joe's portrayal of their long-time friendship. There were scenes of heartfelt discussion but also humour from these two actors.

Myolie Wu as Zoe
I'm on the fence about Myolie's performance in here. It isn't really up to par with her acting in other series, mainly because Zoe's character was a little bit ridiculous at the beginning of the series. She wasn't a character that was difficult to play, except for the fact that Zoe spouts metaphoric dialogue like no tomorrow. So she's Sam's secret admirer but then when she finds out about Belle she flies to Rome to try to work out their misunderstanding? A little far-fetched don't you think? Myolie did a good job as the bubbly and energetic Zoe, she is quite cute and smiley and warm in most scenes but I can't help thinking that in some she overacted, which I found surprising because I had always thought of Myolie as one of the most natural actresses ever. In that sense the writers waste Myolie's talent because of her character... there's not much opportunity for the audience to see Zoe's weakness or vulnerability (aside from her physical illness). She's so unbelievably wholesome that it's laughable. Despite the fact that this wasn't Myolie's best performance, I still feel that her potential as an actress is great and not yet realized. And mark my words, Myolie Wu has what it takes to make it big in TVB, if not only for her versatility so early on in her career, but also because of her absolutely unforgettable performance as the mentally challenged Yan Yan in Golden Faith. She's charming in Triumph, but this was not a breakthrough performance for her. But at least TVB finally found a hairstyle that suits her!

S4 and The Girl
Since the debut of this series, Ron Ng, Sammul Chan, Kenneth Ma and Bosco Wong have come to be known as S4, which I'm guessing means Solar 4. The Girl here refers to Michelle Yip. Anyhow, Ron Ng has now become my favourite newcomer. He gave the most charismatic performance as the determined but impulsive Isaac who secretly idolized his older brother. The scenes between him and Francis Ng are first-rate...from their brotherly relationship being somewhat frosty and competitive to one comprised of mutual understanding with some minor bickering. Of the younger actors, I feel that Ron gave the best performance...he lacks what often afflicts newcomers, such as overacting and stiffness, and has what newcomers lack, mainly a defined presence on the screen and a commitment to not being afraid to show emotions. He's one of the rare new actors that has the "it" factor...the "it" you can't learn, the "it" you can't teach. My opinion of his acting has nothing to do with the fact that I think that he's totally hot. Seriously. But really, any guy who can look totally masculine and drop-dead gorgeous in a pink T-shirt is worth some praise! I do hope that he makes better use of his big eyes to act in the future though. Sammul Chan gave an okay performance as rich spoiled girl-crazy Donald, but I've never really liked Sammul as an actor, he's way too skinny to look at and I think he doesn't have what it takes to be a great actor. He was given an interesting role to play in Survivor's Law as the scheming Vincent, but didn't really excel in there either. In this series, he plays the mandatory rich brat, and although he's believable enough, there's nothing remarkable about his performance. As for Bosco Wong, I liked him when I first saw him in Aqua Heroes, and in Triumph he does a credible job as the witty and intelligent Chris. Kenneth Ma didn't have much to work with as the silly Roy, and we don't really see him enough in here to give him a fair evaluation, so all I can say is that I'm rather indifferent to his performance. Of the S4 guys, I think Ron Ng and Bosco Wong will be the ones to look out for, and apparently TVB thinks so too, now promoting these two in many of their recent series. Michelle Yip has always aggravated me. She's boring to me most of the time (sorry to Michelle fans) and doesn't really measure up to the characters she plays. She always plays the "brotherly" character and here in Triumph I felt she could have done a lot more to portray the fiery character of Zita who was supposed to be ultra-feminist, tomboyish, and independent. In my eyes Zita was supposed to be a spirited girl determined to prove to the world that women could excel in the profession of flight, but Michelle's acting is inadequate here and doesn't really do the character justice. Her eyes constantly look rather vacant and confused and her performance is at times lifeless (minus those scenes opposite Ron Ng and Lok Ying Kwan). She doesn't really seem to love acting at all. Redeeming things is Michelle's decent English and nice hair. But in terms of acting, yet again Michelle disappoints me. She's dull and her acting is unresponsive. Plus, she has really freaky lips.

On the Supporting Cast
Shek Sau and the lady who played Mrs. Tong gave hilarious performances as Sam and Isaac's parents and I was pleasantly surprised at veteran Shek Sau being able to play a comic character. His gestures and voice were appropriately silly, and I loved it when Sam referred to him as Phillip rather than as Dad. Lam Hiu Fung was predictably funny as Paul, and Louisa So shines as the blunt and reluctant Ruby. Long one of TVB's most underrated actresses, she's funny and likeable as the often harsh but actually good-hearted Ruby.

The Metal Birds
What adds to Triumph's success is not only its untraditional romantic plot, but its equal commitment to present a well-researched view into a profession, in here, the profession of flight. It's probably one of the most interesting ones done in a series, there are already too many series out there on the doctor profession, police careers, or lawyer profession, etc. You can actually learn a lot about planes, flying, or the journey to becoming a pilot from this series. At the end of each episode, one of the cast members even comes out to give some common knowledge about flying and planes. Although having actors speak directly to the camera/audience is traditionally a little chessy, it was nonetheless educational. The flight training sessions with S4 and Zita were very fun to watch, and the best part was watching their emotions of accomplishment when they finally took off into the clouds on their first flights. Another good part was watching them study, especially Isaac who finally found a study method that worked for him (taping all of his notes on his walls and bouncing a ball to hit each of them) ... you realize the effort these young people put into their ambition and when they finally realize their dream you can't help but be happy and even proud for them.

Things That Make You Go "Huh"?
1) Zoe flying to Rome...a little too far-fetched.

2) Chris and Coco's abruptly ended relationship after Vincent's death.

3) Sam's award being presented at the airport...the award had nothing really to do with his career.

4) Unnecessary cameos... please, the Twins?! Eason Chan's cameo was a great one, but the Twins?! Agh!

5) Zita accepting Donald after seeing the rock heart...who else thought she did it out of vulnerability/anger at Isaac for denying his feelings?

6) Donald and Chris acting out a skit to make Zita dump Donald. So Donald had to leave Solar Airways...it didn't mean he had to break up with Zita. This part made no sense to me.

7) The lack of acknowledgement of the time difference between Hong Kong and Rome...and wasn't that Florence in some scenes? They called it Rome but I could have sworn it was Florence.

Fate's Journey
Many people didn't like that Sam and Belle didn't end up together but personally I found it fitting. Yes, fate probably pulled some strings that one year ago in Rome, but as Vincent said later on in the series, if Sam picked up Belle's bracelet three times and she STILL wasn't able to keep it on her wrist, then Sam and Belle were never meant to be in the first place. Some of you may say that Vincent showed up as an obstacle, or that Zoe picked up that godforsaken Triangel doll and so the timing was not right for Sam and Belle to be together. But if the timing wasn't right then being together was never their destiny!

In that respect I admire the character of Zoe. Although her pursuit of Sam seemed desperate and even pathetic at the beginning, she was someone who "took fate into her own hands", so to speak. Having miraculously survived her illness for so long, Zoe took her own happiness into her own hands and sought her one love. It's not like Zoe was scheming to yank Sam away from Belle. When she discovered their affair back in Rome, she tried everything to work out the misunderstandings and give the pair another chance. Belle, on the other hand, stuck with Vincent but then started to regret it and based her life on fate when constantly questioning her feelings for Sam. You can't live your life totally on fate and luck. If someone is so faithful to the idea of everything being predetermined, then why stay on this earth? I mean, we all must feel we can make a difference, or we would have thrown ourselves out a window a long time ago.

The Loot Bag
There's a lot to like in the pleasant interplay of the Tong family members. The family dynamic was amusing to watch and their scenes were written with such wit and heart. Add Francis Ng, Ron Ng, Shek Sau, and the lady who plays Mrs. Tong's performances and you've got yourself a great mini family sitcom. The part where Mr. Tong was worrying that he was impotent was totally hilarious, especially when Sam and Isaac found out at the hospital and tried so hard not to laugh! The S4 friendship was also a surprisingly gratifying experience, the relationship between the four young guys and occasional nitbits of them making total fools of themselves provides an honourable badge of TVB's long-run success of portraying loyal and believable friendships. This was especially the case with the scenes at the "Fei Ying Jai" (their own private "clubhouse" type thing). Another goody are the scenes filmed abroad...those in Europe, Hokkaido, and New Zealand were gorgeous and a refreshing break to the normal skyscraper city backdrop of other series.

Another goody...the theme song. Catchy as ever and the lyrics are very appropriate. I will never get sick of the song...LOL. Originally, though, the song was Eason Chan's "Brother and Sister" whose lyrics were in Mandarin. But then Cantonese lyrics were written...and you've got yourself "Age is Like Song". Or something like that.

Based on a seldom-run but challenging premise, this series manages to handle the shaky theme of fate very well. To set this series in an airport was an ingenious idea, given the setting's inevitable link to the theme. Real emotions that arose from this confusing force are portrayed in a starkingly sincere manner even if at times a little flaky. When paired with a strong cast and strong characters, this series becomes one very engaging one to watch.

Triumph in the Skies also gives us one of the most satisfying, if not the most satisfying, endings in TVB. Poetic justice is rendered in terms of Vincent and Belle, Sam and Zoe live happily ever after, and Zita chooses neither Isaac or Donald The characters' personalities or emotions are never betrayed, and when the end comes it comes fittingly and closes on a wonderfully warm note. In particular, the proposal scene between Sam and Zoe will stay engraved in my mind, and unlike others, I'm personally glad that Zita ended up with neither Isaac or Donald, since she never really loved Donald in the first place and because my dear Ron Ng is too good for Michelle Yip.

The Barf Bag
1) The impossibly positive and perky Zoe. She's so totally chipper that it's irritating at times.

2) Flora Chan's crying scenes. It was torture to watch her try to squeeze out some tears.

3) The actors' English. Most of the time I could only figure out what they were saying by reading the subtitles! If TVB had so much money to finance the airplane scenes and abroad scenes, couldn't they have sent their actors to some English lessons?

4) Coco (Vincent's younger sister). Not the actress, but the character. Spoiled little brat who needs a beating or two.

5) Belle, for the reasons named above.

6) The "love-pair" items in Vincent and Belle's apartment. Pink bowl, blue bowl. Pink towel, blue towel. Pink apron, blue apron. Pink cup, blue cup. You get the idea. A little too cheesy for my taste.

7) The overexposure of the Triangel doll.

8) Please give us a villain!! A villain, TVB, a villain! This is one thing that this series is clearly missing.

From the Grapevine
Word has it that TVB's planning to film a "bonus" of this series...and surprise surprise, in this one Vincent's not going to die! Now that will be interesting. Practically all of the actors in this series said that they were very nervous about working with Film Emperor Francis Ng, and Ron Ng, Myolie Wu, and Flora Chan were actually quite anxious and felt pressure right when they started filming (as they said in interviews). Rumous flew right after this series that Myolie and Michelle were at war, which in my opinion is nothing but that - rumours. Ron Ng was discovered by Louis Koo; he was originally a dancer (like actor Michael Tse) until Louis Koo suggested he join some of TVB's acting lessons. And the guys of S4 became very good friends after filming this series and have gone on to work on other series together.

To Watch or Not To Watch, that is the Question
Without a single doubt in my mind, WATCH THIS SERIES. I cannot stress this enough. Triumph in the Skies is my favourite modern TVB series of all time (that I've seen anyway). It combines distinct themes (career, family, friendship, romance, the challenge of fate) with stunning success. Not only does everything happen for a reason, but everything happens for a good reason. The minor inconsistencies and sometimes bad acting is overshadowed by Triumph's compelling narrative and phenomenal performances. You will not want to miss this one, believe me. I went into this series with overblown expectations and those were exceeded.

Rating
And for all my gushing, I'm giving this series a . I wouldn't change a thing if I could.
